- graystar, on 10/12/2007, -5/+44Funny, check out what I took a picture of in London last night. Still needs some work for them.
http://www.camerongray.net/index.php?/archives/8-This-train-is-delayed-until-Windows-reboots.html - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Can't put anything like this in Philadelphia. They'd still get pissed all over.
- fighthairloss, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11NEW YORK?!!! Give me a break... how could anyone think that anything... anything AT ALL about the NY subway system is beautful? I live here and trust me, we all HATE the subway, and only take it because we have to.
Nasty urine-soaked stations, with equally nasty and lazy metro union employees, a system that can't even adequately notify riders when trains are delayed (and indeed the system itself probably doesn't know where any given train actually is at any given moment)... beautiful indeed.
And by the way, that picture of Grand Central is the Metro North portion of the terminal... if you actually go to the subway part of Grand Central, you get the same old piss-stained wasteland. - thesimplefix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Oh Ya!!!! Well, the ones in Toronto look like bathrooms designed in the 70s..... and as dirty as the bathrooms at some run down truck stops!!!!!
- lazyguy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Wow... some of these are awesome. I mean, if all stations were like this, we would have so much less mugging down there.
And for the record, Toronto and Boston's subway system is NOWHERE as good as shown in the pictures. Ive been thoroughly through both of those systems, and most of the stops are dark, depressing, and the only thing to "look at" is OTHER PEOPLE to make sure they dont mug you. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9@Andrewcod: Pyongyang is included, but you have better pictures.
- mhockey14221, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Theres something about all of the MTA that just makes me want to kill myself. The only beautiful thing in the whole system is getting out of the subway station.
- david76, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7You noticed the photo of New York's subway was a closeup of the tiled sign for Grand Central and of a sculpture on the floor.
Seriously, the largest subway system in the country is a dump. Unfortunately, refurbishing a station seems to take years, even when it's a tiny one like the 77th St station on the Upper East Side. When there is a crew doing work there's 5-6 workers, 2-3 supervisors and one guy actually doing any work with the rest just standing around watching him.
It's really unfortunate what a decrepit state the New York's subway system is in. - brandizzle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Because obviously you can't get mugged inside something that's pretty.
- thesimplefix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Agreed! Toronto subways are depressing.... you forgot to mention the homeless people begging for change.
- carcass350, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6"How can it feature all these cool looking subways and then skip out Pyongyang in North Korea? Honestly, the subway there's insane!"
Look about 2/3 down the page - chrisjscott, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5lazyguy:
You beat me to the punch - I was very interested to see this article and, as I was scrolling through it I thought to myself "Ha! If only Boston looked hal as good as... uhhhh... they put Boston on here?!?!"
I live in Boston and this article basically amounts to false advertising. Our subway system is the oldest in the country and it's obvious - dirty, uninspired, drab and depressing.
I can't help but to wonder how many of these other featured locations benefit from a little delusional analysis. - NivenHuH, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I wish San Francisco would spice up their stations as well.. For being a city of the arts, it sure does lack by comparison.. :(
- bloqmon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4On the DC metro they recently made/are still making the entrance to the Pentagon City stop look something like the picture from Bilbao with the large glass enclosure. Not sure about other stops though..But yeah the underground part is really ugly, big and ugly.
- pivo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4djironx: I really like the DC metro. Boston is represented on the site, but they've really found about the *only* nice stations (or parts of stations) in the city. While all stations are different here, 99% are crap. I'm always in awe in the DC metro, like I've arrived in some si-fi urban utopia.
- Skunkhair, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@bSimms
seeing as the DC Metro is my home town and main mode of transportation, i have to argue that based off the article, it's the only subway system in the states that didn't make the list because it houses tons of pieces of art. The Metro itself approved by The Commission of Fine Arts. Basically, I interpret that as The Metro itself is a piece of art and not a defunct system (i.e. NYC) that houses art. Portland, and LA also made the list for the same reasons...they house art. Granted, you can find art on the Metro, but it's not like the other U.S. cities where it's at every station. - djironx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I've been on the DC Metro plenty of times and its a nice system, very smooth. But the one thing i hate about it are the stations. Its just concrete with the cauphers, and that's the way every underground station looks. It gets rather boring seeing the same thing at every station. While looking through these pictures, I get jealous. Every station has style, architecture, and color, with some being just breathtaking. And i look at the two pictures of DC at the bottom and realize how boring our stations really are. But of course the city isn't gonna have enough money to spice up our stations because they decided to build a baseball stadium instead.
- BigJuiceMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4word to that. I'm Portland proud...BUT...no way does our MAX line belong on the list.
- jeriqo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6These pictures lie so much..
- ajchavar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5that didnt stop them from including NYC. . .
- mindsnare, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3too much fisheye?
- Screamager, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I love the fact that the Madrid metro isn't even listed despite the mayors obsession with remodeling (and consequently closing) stations and digging up the whole city.
- NonPC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2They may look nice, but they all reek of creosote and urine.
- david76, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I almost forgot to mention the fetid stench in the tunnel at the 51st St. Station on the East Side. It's a known problem, and has been for years. The MTA has done nothing.
- bSimms, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I don't think the DC subway is anything special, but its on there. Other stations look cool though.
- mindsnare, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2every now and then when I head to work via the Melbourne underground city loop (which is teeny tiny compared to most) I look around and get rather baffled at how bloody big these underground stations are, my brain can't really compute how it is done....I mean, I know how it's done but it doesn't seem possible. Kinda like watching a 747 take off.
- energyblue, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4There is something about these pictures that scare me.
Just me? - andrewcod, on 10/12/2007, -12/+14How can it feature all these cool looking subways and then skip out Pyongyang in North Korea? Honestly, the subway there's insane!

They're from when I went there last year, the second country in the axis of evil I've been to :D - theolane, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2ha ha fighthairloss, I was thinking the EXACT same thing... I don't see the hotter-than-hell, reeks like piss and B.O. Jackson Heights subway station - the only thing to look at there is recruiting Scientology people offering "stress tests" and a hot dog guy...
- osbjmg, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5That's funny, that screen even has the console information on the screen:
38400 baud
No parity
8 data bits
1 stop bit - ziadoz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Some really awesome pictures in there. Gotta love the architechture.
- tjordan90, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I definitely read that as the Bo Jackson Heights Subway System.
- bigredgpk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That picture of Copley T stop is total BS. yeah, the entrance is nice but the stop it's self is hooooorable...
The silver line is very nice but no one rides it unless they are going to the airport (and that's when the tunnel isn't collapsing...)
DC has the best Metro I've seen, it comes on time, it's clean, but man o man those stops are far under ground.
Timmay - mancat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You know, Paris does have a very beautiful subway system. Very efficient too. The only problem? It literally smells like *****. I still recall to this day the smell that came flying at you as soon as you entered any station in the city. It was like a thousand bums walking past you at once.
- TheIronBadger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2They really do. I've been through the Lille, Paris and Prague stations and they look much better in pictures. For the Lille ones I am surprised the Republic Beaux Arts station wasn't on the front page. It's the best one in my opinion, lots of artwork all over the station.
- daprice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Just a couple weeks ago, I saw a similar Windows out-of-memory error message on a gas pump at a gas station. I had to go to another pump since Windows made that one non-functional. The geniuses who designed that pump were using Windows to display advertisements while you wait for your tank to fill, but they also integrated the important pump operating functions in Windows.
- DJS2005, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I was happy to see Montreal there. The subway there has some really interesting stations.I was sure it wouldn't be there considering the more popular cities around the world.
- gridrunner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Perhaps it's not classically 'beautiful', but it sure has character. Here's a shot of mine from London's Tube: http://www.flickr.com/photos/aderowbotham/137466381/
- swarve, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Have a look at these great shots of the Munich U-Bahn (underground/metro) from effpunkt on flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/effpunkt/sets/1166192/
Very striking colours! - quasipalm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's actually due in part to the crazy Transit Workers Union. They make sure that the MTA can't hire a single person for any job if they aren't part of the union. That means that if you want to hire 6 janitors to clean a station, you have to pay each one 60,000 for wages and benefits. This criples the MTA -- they aren't made of money.
I wish someone in the city / state would fire all those ***** and clean house. There's no reason a rich city in a rich country should have a subway system soaked in pee. - mindracer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yeah Montreal is great, but there some other awesome cities too! the Athens metro stations are something else
- JestaMcMerv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1After just getting back from Europe, I think I would say Brussels has an amazing concept for the subway system. Let a different artist design each different metro station.
- inactive, on 01/24/2008, -0/+1That's great find

http://hyipnews.freehostia.com/hyip - DS513, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Beat me to it! I was about to ask how the "beautiful" Philly subway didn't make the list. If Philly's subway system was as functional as Washington DC's, I'm sure it would make much more income. Oh, and add some urinals at each station.
- al28p, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yes they do, well at least for the new york subway, which is grubby as hell. But some european ones look sick.
- Cemnyy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As a subway buff, I was thinking the exact same thing Seidoger! I know PBS did a documentary on Subways of the world a few years back which inspired the same feeling in me. BTW, I grew up in NYC and kinda miss the subways however grimy they may have been. I live in LA now and ride the "Red Line"- it just ain't the same. The LA photos are kind of misleading- the subways here are dirty and full of panhandlers and homeless, and the stations aren't that great, however the trains run on schedule 95% of the time.
- niczar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nice page, it's missing however the retrofuturistic "Arts & Métiers" station of Paris, by Schuiten & Peeters.
http://www.arts-et-metiers.net/magic.php?P=194&lang=fra&flash=f
It's my favorite metro station in the world, by far, even though it's not the biggest or most expensive. It's got that huge metal wheel protruding from the ceiling, which looks like it's 50m in diameters.
If you ever go there, be sure to go visit the museum, the XVIIIth century scientific device are stunning, and in a similar style. - m1ss1ontomars, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1what?! no BART? :(
actually, BART doesn't have that great architecture or anything. but pairs of stations (like El Cerrito Plaza and El Cerrito del Norte) have similar architecture but different colors. Like 12 St. Oakland has red bricks, but 19 St. has blue ones. - wintermute1974, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Interesting. Maybe the BART is considered more a light rail system than a subway or tube. Either that, or the omission was due to a lack of pictures.
- wintermute1974, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I prefer travelling by metro/subway/tube when I visit cities, and I find one thing very unique about the London Underground: After travelling on the tube, if I blow my nose, I discover that I have black snot.
I kid you not. Are "the black snots" a known London phenomenon, or does it only affect the tourists like me? -
