Stop forcing stories the Digg community is intererested in to the front page. - netscapeblows, on 10/12/2007, -33/+28Should say is *not* interested in. Since all the other stories got like 2 diggs each. lame.
- netscapeblows, on 10/12/2007, -21/+38Did i mention it's sad a big company (AOL) needs to resort to this sort of crap?
- Axios, on 10/12/2007, -6/+37@netscapeblows
I didn't think much of that at first... until I looked at bdognurse's submissions list and saw that Calacanis dugg every last one of 'em. - netscapeblows, on 10/12/2007, -5/+31Looks like Calacanis' minions are trying to digg down this stuff. Oh well. They can't hide the truth. http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/5290/3555/1600/digg.jpg
(you may need to hit reload for the image to appear)
Netscape has a policy against this exact stuff. Why doesn't Digg? - phlux, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21No *****.
This and the ford stories - WTF.
I think that main stream companies got sight of Digg and are sponsering targetted ads via these lame ass posts through shill accounts.
To quote Dune:
"You are transparent" "I see plans within Plans" - kotton, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7Does the letters B-M-W really make that much more of a difference in whos eye this article catches? I checked out all the other submissions which have been submitted only 3 hours before and this one seems to be the one that made it to the front page. Im not trying to start a digg war or anything but I was just curious why this submission was so much more popular. On another note I am pretty sure that BMW has not labeled the Mini with a BMW tag to try and popularize a vehicle based on its strongpoints as a car and not as a name, but that is just my thoughts.
- netscapeblows, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23Usually I hate when 'digg wars' like this happen, but honestly this is just not right. People should not be allowed to abuse our community. Netscape BANS sites for 14 days if they do this.
http://www.calacanis.com/2006/08/09/gaming-on-netscape/
Yet they come right over here and do the same thing. Hontestly WTH? - LecherousVenom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17I had to digg-down a couple other of this crew's stories. There are a LOT of people gaming DIGG right now for AdSense revenue, among others...
but yeah, bdognurse can chomp the big choad. - netscapeblows, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8LecherousVenom: Well their plan is going to backfire. Just like how their plan to copy Digg with Netscape backfired.
It's time for the Digg staff to copy something from Netscape -- their rules against gaming the system. Submitting your own stories is one thing. Getting 20 people to Digg it is another thing all together. - emooney, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Hey netscapeblows,
http://diggforlife.blogspot.com/ ( How Jason Calacanis's Weblogs Inc. systematically games Digg) needs to be seen. Right now, this URL only has 9 diggs. This is the most important story right now. I don't want to see digg become an advertising testbed. - elroy, on 10/12/2007, -19/+3@kotton:
i guess so, eh? now shut the ***** up. really, what does it matter which story hits the front page? i'm *SO* tired of seeing ***** comments of this sort at the top of EVERY story. lots of dupes are submitted, only one (or two) make it to the front page. GET OVER IT.
BMW's reasons for not putting their name on it actually are quite a bit about "a name" -- the cooper mini. The mini's legendary and they chose to preserve the brand name. Also, I certainly hope you weren't implying that BMW is merely "a name" -- they've made durable, well-balanced, fun-to-drive cars for a long time, even before they were popular with yuppies. - fyre2012, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9@ elroy
The point is that there is an abuse of the system going on, and it's going counter to the goals and culture of Digg (i.e. true democracy).
It's not going to change unless people can recognize when it's happening, and voice their distain for it. (the squeaky wheel, the grease, etc...).
So, until a new set of logic is put in place to prevent this type of 'dig-squatting / dig-gaming', people (including myself) will bitch about it.
This is a democracy... To make democracies function, ALL parties need to participate...
I know it's easy to forget democracy with all that BS going through the TV these days... - netscapeblows, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2emooney: the only way to get more attention to it is if a more influential digger posts it, or if someone else blogs about it. And that last post is out of the digg que as it's 4 days old.
- Namco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1jdawg, I hope you roll it and it catches on fire, GTA style.
- netscapeblows, on 10/12/2007, -31/+121Hey bdognurse stop frickin digg spamming. (See http://diggforlife.blogspot.com/)
- 5thfreedom, on 10/12/2007, -2/+54Is it just me, or does it look almost exactly the same as the old one? The un-trained eye isn't going to notice a difference.
- tidu, on 10/12/2007, -15/+6well, the trained eye will notice that
"the new model strives to retain the brand's go-kart handling" - pouwerkerk, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11No, I completely agree. I tried to look at five of the images to convince myself of the difference, then I gave up. It looks the same. The article does say that they did this on purpose: "after all, if it ain't broke, don't fix it." But I can't imagine that it will be easy for BMW/Mini to advertise the visual difference, which is a major selling point, missed.
- floejoe, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2so much for a "complete revamp"
What's with the oversized instruments, does that have an appeal? - Gryffydd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Uh yeah....I thought I'd been linked to pictures of the old one for a second...
- elroy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3They said "turbocharged", but wasn't the S supercharged? Have they changed this or am I (or the writer) mistaken?
- tomisina, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1sorta like how most new porsche(s)? that come out are 95% new body panels... where they just dingged up the old ones and called it good
- cartwheels, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I really do notice the difference. Maybe it's just me, but the new one looks more "cute," whereas the older one looks cool and low-slung. I'm very disappointed.
- akashra, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2To me it doens't look identical, and I like the old one better, but I can't pick what the differences are. I think I still like the Checkmate and Park Lane ones best.
- palmer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"a completely new body design"
Bullcrap.
And it's still crummy front-wheel drive. Really, you're never going to get "go-kart" handling with all the weight loaded on the front of the car. Most front-wheel-drive cars would rather push their front tires sideways across the pavement than turn.
Fortunately, some manufacturers are letting go of the front-wheel-drive myth and admitting that it sucks if you care at all about handling. Thus recent platform introductions like the Crossfire and Solstice. - konstantinos88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You've obviously never driven a MINI, palmer. I have an '02, and it handles like no other car I've ever driven in my life. It grips the road like a true go-kart, and you can't tell me otherwise unless you drive one yourself.
The incredible G-forces you feel going around corners as you romp on that little guy's accelerator can only be felt when you get in the range of the $80K Porches.
On a side note, being an '02 Cooper S owner, the new models are COMPLETELY different if you ask me. The two biggest disappointments are that they changed the hood and made it 'bubblier' and that they exchanged the ever-customizable supercharger-based engine for the harder-to-tune turbocharger-based one.
- tidu, on 10/12/2007, -15/+6well, the trained eye will notice that
- jomdahl, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11I wear Minis like rollerskates.
- 1ocean, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You wont be able skate on my mini cooper... its got 300 horses! http://x-coverage.com/mini-cooper.html
- konstantinos88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You heretic! That's no longer a MINI!
(still dugg you up though...)
- dinobot, on 10/12/2007, -16/+7I like the mini, nice vehicle and all... but to be honest? I personally prefer a Mustang GT and an Avalanche as everyday vehicles/weekend warriors.
- gaius_baltar, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6It was redesigned from the ground up to... look like a Mini. Yawn. It's all about the Tesla Roadster right now for me. I would kill for that car.
- MaXPL, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5oh man, i should just get the 2005 model cause they look the same.
- Chaos12, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3The only thing they changed in the exterior apparently is raising the hood or something.
- Ghostal, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6Wow!!!! Looks just like the previous version!
- elastikos, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I can't see a difference either.
- CaseyB, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3Wow, what a radical all new complete redesign! The S badge now looks slightly different!
- Disease, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Well it's a bloody Mini. It's well worth the additional cost! Who doesn't want to be the first kid on your block with the new Mini with a different S badge
- emitemirp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7It looks pretty nice. But as many people said before, at quick glance it looks like the previous model year Minis. I have a 2006 Mini right now and I couldn't be happier. The only thing is that under the hood is a new engine: a PSA engine instead of a Chrysler engine. I don't know if that means better performance or anything. They did restyle the interior a bit. Made it more "clean."
I really just can't wait for the Traveller version which has an extended wheelbase. Really that would make the perfect car for me: unique styling, good warranty, good resale value, and (with the Traveller) decent amount of space. - UncleJerry, on 10/12/2007, -10/+5still makes my pants tight
- TheoDork, on 10/12/2007, -13/+4U-G-L-Y
- QuantumLo0p, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3Yup, I agree with you.
I'm going to hang on to my 7 series for a while.
- QuantumLo0p, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3Yup, I agree with you.
- ,,|,_, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27I bet the "big-truck guys" will laugh but heck, some of us need to UNDER compensate...
;-) - thussy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Very minor exterior changes. It does seem more like the classic Minis though. The Mini is an amazing car, and an awesome daily driver. The best part about it is that it depreciates very slowly. Probably the best daily driver investment too.
Far more nimble (and quicker) than an Avalanche and Mustang GT - and leaps better on gas. But if you need a truck for your job... well then Chevy/Ford it is. - squeevey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3what are the fuel efficiency ratings on it?
- joeydoo, on 10/12/2007, -10/+5They are numbers which you can use to determine the vehicles running costs. These figure are typically expressed with the signifiers MPG or MPL (Miles per Gallon, Miles per Litre)
- sldSquirrel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Really? Thanks for the info!
- elroy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+31.7L valvetronic with a 6-speed? Probably pretty good... :-D
- invinciblechunk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It's a big building with patients. But that's not important right now.
- joeydoo, on 10/12/2007, -10/+5They are numbers which you can use to determine the vehicles running costs. These figure are typically expressed with the signifiers MPG or MPL (Miles per Gallon, Miles per Litre)
- kanecorp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5for some reason i really like minis...this coming from a "big truck guy"
- henry95, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8It looks great, but the interior is awful.
- greenamp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I agree. Molded plastic everywhere.
- fungke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2That interior is nasty. At least the current version looks clean, tidy and classy. The new one looks like a Japanese mistake!
- kcpwnsgman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7One thing I never knew is that the MINI coopers are from BMW, and I think if more people realized that they were, and not some crappy random manufacturer, people would take them much more seriously.
Just look at the interior, I will have to wait to test drive one before I get a new car, it looks so sporty but so small, I don't even know if I can fit...- danielwsmithee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I'm 6'4" and test drove one. My wife loves them so we had to test drive it!! Anyways I fit just fine. I was very impressed with how adjustable the seat was. It went way back until it was almost touching the back seat and practically sitting on the floor. It was a fun car to drive. If you are going to get it get the S though because the regular mini will disappoint.
- superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm also fairly tall (6' 2") with long legs - I fit in the MINI very easily. The best thing though is the headroom, front and back there is plenty of space. The rear passengers will have a tight sqeeze if they are sitting behind you but for two people it has a great deal of space for tall people.
- coutub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The first hint you would have that they are a BMW product:
you buy them from a BMW Dealer

- orph3us, on 10/12/2007, -24/+0You ***** complaining about stories being on the front page more than once need to just shut the ***** up and keep to your ***** selves. Seriously, I've seen this ***** ***** on more than one story thats been on the front page THAT I HAVEN'T SEEN YET... I dont give a ***** if you've seen it ten times, some of us haven't even seen it once. Novel idea, ***** it if you've seen it already. DONT SPAM MY UNREAD THREADS WITH YOUR ***** HAVE A NICE DAY :D@!!!!!!!!!!!!
- lbmtb, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Dude, I think you're caps lock is stuck or something. Burried as lame.
- netscapeblows, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2Buddy, there are thousands of pieces of news in the world every day. Digg can't cover them all, or you'd never be able to keep up. Digg is supposed to focus on important things. A car that gets a nose job and lipo is not front page news. That is.... unless you are AOL and you have a digg spam list.
- enumerated, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I'm happy they got rid of the supercharger and went for the turbo - lots of untouched cheap power!
- orph3us, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Pardon me if this story seems to be some sort of advertisement. I don't understand what/who calcanis is, but seriously, there have been a lot of dupes on front pages and every time someone, and usually multiple people feel like they need to post about it and I really wish they wouldn't. Just bury it, that's what it's there for.
- netscapeblows, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7calacanis is an AOL employee/executive who runs weblogs inc. he posts stories from his sites then sends it out on a mailing list to dozens of other AOL people and gets them to digg it. that way his stories get to the front page, even if he posts them way after everyone else.
- ej25goddess, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1The body looks almost identical, but a bit pudgier. The interior is still trash. Switching the forced induction model to turbocharging rather than supercharging is a great idea, however they still need an all wheel drive model to handle the power of the inevitable Works version.
- orph3us, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2sorry lbmtb, I was just really pissed off to have to read 7 posts before getting to the first one that had anything to do with the story. P.S. MINIs rock ;P
- emooney, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@orph3us
The intention of Digg is to have the users drive the stories. I believe netscapeblows has uncovered a method that 'spammers' are using to drive traffic to their site. It doesn't matter if it's a story I'm interested in or not, the fact is is that a story is wrongfully being pushed to the front page. Mark my words, if this isn't addressed by Digg, we'll soon start seeing catchy titles blogs with Viagra ads on them. At that point what would be the difference between that and a piece of junk mail? In other words, digg would be useless to me.
- emooney, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@orph3us
- nicktripp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5There are a number of changes to the new R56 MINI, most of which are not cosmetic. There's a new engine, more horspower and a change from a supercharger to a turbocharger in the S model. I'm not even going to pretend like I'm an authority on the issue. Foruntately, Motoringfile has it covered from A to Z...
http://motoringfile.com/2006/08/14/the-2007-mini-in-detail/ - rnelsonee, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Yeah, it looks very close to the previous models - the only really noticible thing to me is the rear is longer. The switch to turbo seems to have worked out - 175 hp! Mine (2004) was the supercharged engine and was only 132 hp. But I really did like that supercharger - no lag for the boost to show up, which is something that happens with turbos.
I totalled my Mini within 6 months of getting it. I loved that car. A little to much I suppose - for those that are even considering a Mini, go test drive one. The drive-by-wire system is something that you just have to see for yourself (steering wheel and tires are linked via sensitive sensors/computer rather than all-mechanical links). I liked it so much that I switched my commute from an interstate to windy backrounds, complete with one-way bridges and blind turns. Hence the loss of the car :)- XtremePsionic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What are you talking about man? The 02-06 Cooper S had 160-168hp stock, and there is a drive by wire throttle, not steering wheel :) You're confusing DSC with drive by wire.
- rnelsonee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0My bad, it was 163... no idea why I had 130-something stuck in my head. Maybe that was my car before that. And yeah, I pretty much call any electronic steering/throttle/braking "drive by wire"...
- coutub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1uh, the throttle is drive by wire.
The steering, brakes and other systems are the standard mechanical methods.
The only unique part of the steering is the the hydraulic assist is driven by an electric motor instead of the traditional mechanical belts off the serpentine belt.
- EochaidRiata, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5More Calacanis spam.

Go back to Netscape *****. - colonelpanic, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Still too small. I'll keep my 93 S10 Blazer over one of those anyday.
I've noticed a few people quesioning the fuel efficiency, yet nobody wants to know crash test ratings. A car this small can't be very safe.- Jonsey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14 star saftey rating I think, which is likely as good or better then a 93 S10

- SmeRndmGy, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2It still looks the same. Stupid looking. If you're an idiot with too much money to waste, buy this. Anyone else, get a real car. Oh, a "real car." So the Mini is a fake car? Bravo. (Clap, clap, clap)
"You want a fuel efficient car, you can get more fuel efficient cars for less money."
I get 32/38 mpg on my Mini. Certainly I can get cheaper cars with the same fuel efficiency but they won't come with great BMW customer service. My Mini comes with 3 years FULL maintenance and a great 4 year warranty. I also get free car rentals when I bring my car in. There's so much value added that you don't see.
"You want to look like a douchebag on wheels, buy this."
Thanks for your opinion. But why all the hate? - omnivector, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you want a car that accelerates fast, and handles superb, this car is actually a really good deal. If you want a car that can go 0-60 in a straight line and fall off a cliff (Mustang) you can surely get one for less money.
- coutub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"If you're an idiot with too much money to waste, buy this. Anyone else, get a real car. You want a fast car, you can get faster cars for less money. "
Really? Real car, too much money: for $20K you get to win the Showroom Stock C category from the SCCA

- Universal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Just a mini note...
When refering to the new MINI, it's typed as MINI in all caps. When referring to the old Mini, it is typed as Mini. And for gods sake don't call it a BMW MINI Cooper! It may be owned by BMW, but it's not a BMW MINI Cooper.
Let's Motor ;-) - BrowncoatJedi, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2This is okay for women and gays, but if you are a straight male and drive one you should be embarassed.
