Stop forcing stories the Digg community is intererested in to the front page. - 5thfreedom, on 10/12/2007, -2/+54Is it just me, or does it look almost exactly the same as the old one? The un-trained eye isn't going to notice a difference.
- Axios, on 10/12/2007, -6/+37@netscapeblows
I didn't think much of that at first... until I looked at bdognurse's submissions list and saw that Calacanis dugg every last one of 'em. - netscapeblows, on 10/12/2007, -5/+31Looks like Calacanis' minions are trying to digg down this stuff. Oh well. They can't hide the truth. http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/5290/3555/1600/digg.jpg
(you may need to hit reload for the image to appear)
Netscape has a policy against this exact stuff. Why doesn't Digg? - ,,|,_, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27I bet the "big-truck guys" will laugh but heck, some of us need to UNDER compensate...
;-) - netscapeblows, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23Usually I hate when 'digg wars' like this happen, but honestly this is just not right. People should not be allowed to abuse our community. Netscape BANS sites for 14 days if they do this.
http://www.calacanis.com/2006/08/09/gaming-on-netscape/
Yet they come right over here and do the same thing. Hontestly WTH? - phlux, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21No *****.
This and the ford stories - WTF.
I think that main stream companies got sight of Digg and are sponsering targetted ads via these lame ass posts through shill accounts.
To quote Dune:
"You are transparent" "I see plans within Plans" - netscapeblows, on 10/12/2007, -21/+38Did i mention it's sad a big company (AOL) needs to resort to this sort of crap?
- LecherousVenom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17I had to digg-down a couple other of this crew's stories. There are a LOT of people gaming DIGG right now for AdSense revenue, among others...
but yeah, bdognurse can chomp the big choad. - pouwerkerk, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11No, I completely agree. I tried to look at five of the images to convince myself of the difference, then I gave up. It looks the same. The article does say that they did this on purpose: "after all, if it ain't broke, don't fix it." But I can't imagine that it will be easy for BMW/Mini to advertise the visual difference, which is a major selling point, missed.
- jomdahl, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11I wear Minis like rollerskates.
- netscapeblows, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8LecherousVenom: Well their plan is going to backfire. Just like how their plan to copy Digg with Netscape backfired.
It's time for the Digg staff to copy something from Netscape -- their rules against gaming the system. Submitting your own stories is one thing. Getting 20 people to Digg it is another thing all together. - fyre2012, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9@ elroy
The point is that there is an abuse of the system going on, and it's going counter to the goals and culture of Digg (i.e. true democracy).
It's not going to change unless people can recognize when it's happening, and voice their distain for it. (the squeaky wheel, the grease, etc...).
So, until a new set of logic is put in place to prevent this type of 'dig-squatting / dig-gaming', people (including myself) will bitch about it.
This is a democracy... To make democracies function, ALL parties need to participate...
I know it's easy to forget democracy with all that BS going through the TV these days... - henry95, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8It looks great, but the interior is awful.
- netscapeblows, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7calacanis is an AOL employee/executive who runs weblogs inc. he posts stories from his sites then sends it out on a mailing list to dozens of other AOL people and gets them to digg it. that way his stories get to the front page, even if he posts them way after everyone else.
- emitemirp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7It looks pretty nice. But as many people said before, at quick glance it looks like the previous model year Minis. I have a 2006 Mini right now and I couldn't be happier. The only thing is that under the hood is a new engine: a PSA engine instead of a Chrysler engine. I don't know if that means better performance or anything. They did restyle the interior a bit. Made it more "clean."
I really just can't wait for the Traveller version which has an extended wheelbase. Really that would make the perfect car for me: unique styling, good warranty, good resale value, and (with the Traveller) decent amount of space. - emooney, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@orph3us
The intention of Digg is to have the users drive the stories. I believe netscapeblows has uncovered a method that 'spammers' are using to drive traffic to their site. It doesn't matter if it's a story I'm interested in or not, the fact is is that a story is wrongfully being pushed to the front page. Mark my words, if this isn't addressed by Digg, we'll soon start seeing catchy titles blogs with Viagra ads on them. At that point what would be the difference between that and a piece of junk mail? In other words, digg would be useless to me. - thussy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Very minor exterior changes. It does seem more like the classic Minis though. The Mini is an amazing car, and an awesome daily driver. The best part about it is that it depreciates very slowly. Probably the best daily driver investment too.
Far more nimble (and quicker) than an Avalanche and Mustang GT - and leaps better on gas. But if you need a truck for your job... well then Chevy/Ford it is. - kcpwnsgman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7One thing I never knew is that the MINI coopers are from BMW, and I think if more people realized that they were, and not some crappy random manufacturer, people would take them much more seriously.
Just look at the interior, I will have to wait to test drive one before I get a new car, it looks so sporty but so small, I don't even know if I can fit... - danielwsmithee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I'm 6'4" and test drove one. My wife loves them so we had to test drive it!! Anyways I fit just fine. I was very impressed with how adjustable the seat was. It went way back until it was almost touching the back seat and practically sitting on the floor. It was a fun car to drive. If you are going to get it get the S though because the regular mini will disappoint.
- Disease, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Well it's a bloody Mini. It's well worth the additional cost! Who doesn't want to be the first kid on your block with the new Mini with a different S badge
- kanecorp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5for some reason i really like minis...this coming from a "big truck guy"
- nicktripp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5There are a number of changes to the new R56 MINI, most of which are not cosmetic. There's a new engine, more horspower and a change from a supercharger to a turbocharger in the S model. I'm not even going to pretend like I'm an authority on the issue. Foruntately, Motoringfile has it covered from A to Z...
http://motoringfile.com/2006/08/14/the-2007-mini-in-detail/ - lbmtb, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Dude, I think you're caps lock is stuck or something. Burried as lame.
- POKETNRJSH, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If you don't like the car then don't look like an idiot when you say it.
- superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm also fairly tall (6' 2") with long legs - I fit in the MINI very easily. The best thing though is the headroom, front and back there is plenty of space. The rear passengers will have a tight sqeeze if they are sitting behind you but for two people it has a great deal of space for tall people.
- EochaidRiata, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5More Calacanis spam.
Story: http://diggforlife.blogspot.com/2006/08/how-jason-calacaniss-weblogs-inc.html
Go back to Netscape *****. - elroy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+31.7L valvetronic with a 6-speed? Probably pretty good... :-D
- meefman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4My gov't teacher has a mini. She gave me a ride once in it. I was impressed.
- Universal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Just a mini note...
When refering to the new MINI, it's typed as MINI in all caps. When referring to the old Mini, it is typed as Mini. And for gods sake don't call it a BMW MINI Cooper! It may be owned by BMW, but it's not a BMW MINI Cooper.
Let's Motor ;-) - orph3us, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Pardon me if this story seems to be some sort of advertisement. I don't understand what/who calcanis is, but seriously, there have been a lot of dupes on front pages and every time someone, and usually multiple people feel like they need to post about it and I really wish they wouldn't. Just bury it, that's what it's there for.
- defylogik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2and that comment makes no sense, because you have obviously never driven one, so you have no room for an opinion. they are one of the best handling cars out of the box on the market today.
- MiloMindrbindr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2no electricity or hydrogen or alternative fuel version? screw that. I'm looking to buy a new car, but will never buy a crude oil car again (that goes for the prius and the other hybrids too).
- dbarefoot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Here's my quandary: while I agree that it's unethical to ask people who you pay to digg your content, what about your friends, colleagues which you don't supervise, or blog readers?
I don't ask the readers of my blog to 'digg this' very often, but if I did, I'm sure the pattern would look very like what Calacanis and his team are doing. Is that still 'true democracy', as one commenter put it? - XtremePsionic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What are you talking about man? The 02-06 Cooper S had 160-168hp stock, and there is a drive by wire throttle, not steering wheel :) You're confusing DSC with drive by wire.
- emooney, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Hey netscapeblows,
http://diggforlife.blogspot.com/ ( How Jason Calacanis's Weblogs Inc. systematically games Digg) needs to be seen. Right now, this URL only has 9 diggs. This is the most important story right now. I don't want to see digg become an advertising testbed. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You wont be able skate on my mini cooper... its got 300 horses! http://x-coverage.com/mini-cooper.html
- sldSquirrel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Really? Thanks for the info!
- coutub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The first hint you would have that they are a BMW product:
you buy them from a BMW Dealer - defylogik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1mini owners across the word sigh.
at least this mini owner. the new styling changes arent growing on me very fast. - cartwheels, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I really do notice the difference. Maybe it's just me, but the new one looks more "cute," whereas the older one looks cool and low-slung. I'm very disappointed.
- elroy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3They said "turbocharged", but wasn't the S supercharged? Have they changed this or am I (or the writer) mistaken?
- coutub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1uh, the throttle is drive by wire.
The steering, brakes and other systems are the standard mechanical methods.
The only unique part of the steering is the the hydraulic assist is driven by an electric motor instead of the traditional mechanical belts off the serpentine belt. - MrFisty, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Well I'm glad I got the last of the old style S's because the 2007 model looks like an inflatable car with gout.
- coutub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"If you're an idiot with too much money to waste, buy this. Anyone else, get a real car. You want a fast car, you can get faster cars for less money. "
Really? Real car, too much money: for $20K you get to win the Showroom Stock C category from the SCCA
http://www.scca.com/Event/Event.asp?Ref=2005-runoffs-SSC
Silence is your only option to hide your ignorance. - konstantinos88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You've obviously never driven a MINI, palmer. I have an '02, and it handles like no other car I've ever driven in my life. It grips the road like a true go-kart, and you can't tell me otherwise unless you drive one yourself.
The incredible G-forces you feel going around corners as you romp on that little guy's accelerator can only be felt when you get in the range of the $80K Porches.
On a side note, being an '02 Cooper S owner, the new models are COMPLETELY different if you ask me. The two biggest disappointments are that they changed the hood and made it 'bubblier' and that they exchanged the ever-customizable supercharger-based engine for the harder-to-tune turbocharger-based one. - fungke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2That interior is nasty. At least the current version looks clean, tidy and classy. The new one looks like a Japanese mistake!
- akashra, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2To me it doens't look identical, and I like the old one better, but I can't pick what the differences are. I think I still like the Checkmate and Park Lane ones best.
- Frayed_Knot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Bigger is not necessarily safer.
http://www.bridger.us/2002/12/16/CrashTestingMINICooperVsFordF150 - netscapeblows, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2emooney: the only way to get more attention to it is if a more influential digger posts it, or if someone else blogs about it. And that last post is out of the digg que as it's 4 days old.
