- blackmariah, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16Know what the difference is between a porcupine and a BMW?
On a porcupine the pricks are on the OUTSIDE. - merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10"oh God, will my tomtom work at 5000ft????"
Why the hell would you need directions at 5000 feet? There's nothing in your friggin' way, nor do you need to follow roads. You fly in a straight line. What the hell would your GPS say the whole time? "Okay, keep going straight". "Good. Keep going". "Keep going straight". "Keep going straight". "Turn left here. HAH! Just ***** with you. Go straight" - mojo0510, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I've already placed an order for 2 on ebay. Seller said they would be here next week... WOW am I excited. *and a tool!
- 0x0000ff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7too bad the article description contains pretty much all the info available in the link.. and it's barely even past being a concept sketch from what I can see..
- Fowz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Does the roof come down?...cup holders??...oh God, will my tomtom work at 5000ft????
- Alwar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6One of the worst Flash movies I've even seen! My little sister could've done better than that.
- adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Holy crap, if they make an RC version of those..I'm painting it black and filming my own AIRWOLF webisodes.
- drmobutu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Looks like the product of a pretty low-budget 3d-rendering program, too.
Is this for real? I mean, I expect more from BMW marketing materials... - samgab, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Does it come with an iPod adapter?
- TheBritishGuy1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4So the future is full of shiny things....
- dmurray14, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5guys..its a concept design by BMW's design group. It doesn't mean BMW is going to or even thinking about producing it
- gwinerreniwg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I'd trade my M3 for one of these in a heartbeat! The "ultimate flying machine"?
- Dr.Gonzo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Ummmmmmmm...... What the hell is that? A Transformer?
- samgab, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's not even Kosher. Look at the link, not http://www.bmw.com or anything, but "http://www.soos.cc/hhr%20chopper.html".
And notice the poor use of grammar in the description?
"...with having a great view by being surrounded just by glass, with giving the feeling of a little bit luxury."
I'm calling shenanagins. - xofc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Most flight students have a decent proficiency after 20 hours in a helicopter. 5 years? That's a bit extreme. 5 years from day one of flight school, most military pilots will have an entire operational tour under their belts and be heading into a staff tour.
- dmurray14, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@zweben
Why not? Don't tell me you think GPS only works on the ground... - twinklyJesus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Concept sketch? That's little more than a napkin doodle!
- GleepGlop2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i love the feel of driving my chopper and often wished there was a more sporty model available. but i'll wait for the 2008.
- mfratt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2My only question is when I can buy one...
Here is the foreseeable problem with "personal" and "affordable" aircraft: People can hardly drive, could you imagine if they had to *fly?* Not to mention, an aerial collision is almost certain death, at any speed, unless youre only a few feet above the ground. - FLarsen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I wonder what happens when this ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ZT5mQLy5C4 ) guy tries his dad's new helicopter.
- Rodzirra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2BMW. The ultimate SOI SOI SOI machine.
- justinmorris, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3No ***** right? "getting away from the typical shape" Looks like a helicopter to me...?
- ventro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2BMW designgroup USA designed my keyboard. And it sucks.
- vonskippy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wow, that site was major mofugly. No WAY can that have any official ties to BMW.
- matthewplante, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1isn't there already a Chevy HHR?
- nicepants, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My only question is....where is the tail rotor?
- nullcodes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Looks nice. Still waiting for a roadable personal air vehicle. And the company that comes out with one should buy (or encourage investors to buy) small airport-like plots of land in/near cities for the things to land safely.
- moonshn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@merreborn,
It is indeed quite easy to get lost; the only alternative to a GPS system you have is a compass and a map.
Avionic GPS systems are programmed to alert you when you are about to transition an airport's airspace, which would require you to radio for clearance, or of hazards such as mountains, or tall buildings. They also provide information and very accurate reference to features visible from the sky i.e lakes and rivers.
I, for one would not have put my life in my friends hands in that two seat airplane without the nice avionic set it had. - bnoj13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1...it's a concept design.
as in, it's not real at all. - xofc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's a fun idea, but for it to come anywhere near production status, especially as described, it would have to use a gas-turbine engine (to lift the weight of 'luxury' and extravagant soundproofing) and incorporate some automatic safety features that are as-of-yet undeveloped (like automatic flight control system-controlled autorotations). This would deliver a vehicle with a top speed near 200 mph while costing significantly more than a custom-built supercar. Additionally, the human cost of system failures would be drastically more than the same failures when experienced in a car.
- FishyJoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Welcome to the future, flying cars!
- farr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"The typical shape"? Thats exactly the shape of a normal helicopter, its just angles instead of curves.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1*ahem* somebody got a fat check from bimmer
- sprintmarathon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is just a bit of design wank. It has very little, if anything, to do with reality. Still, if it ever did make it into the sky, I bet it would have ***** traction in the snow.
- scheming, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1now you need to be really rich to get around
- bradleyland, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Except for the fact that it looks nothing like Airwolf.
Blasphemy. - hayden.evans, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i want one! personal roflcopter ftw!
- systmcrash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why Airwolf why not make a 6th day mini series. Arnold might take a break from being governor to appear on a few episodes.
- firemillen2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wtf? it's a bunch of dwgs . why not draw a gyroscopic water fueled uniglider? it's a billion years from realization.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1***** take to the air!
- isnoop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wake me when the average Joe Minivian can prove himself capable of countering ground effect, avoiding mass bumping, and not crashing the thing. Oh, and he has to do it while on the phone, with a burger in one hand, and after a couple of beers.
I want flying vehicles, but that desire is canceled by fear of everyone else getting behind the stick of their own flying blender-bomb-mobile. - snipes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That description was a huge run on sentence.
- mrbambastik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1HHR... why did BMW name it after a Chevy minivan?
- Karmalary, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Widespread use of this product will result in accelerated evolution.
- dylanrush, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1That doesn't look fligthtworthy at all. Just a giant window with a metal block in the back, with rotors on the top. No landing gear, no way to open the cockpit or anything. And the chassis looks like its smaller than a bookcase, unless the cockpit is capable of holding 4 people. They would have to stick a formula-racer-esque engine in there with no room for fuel.
Concept art is just art. These things NEVER take off (no pun intended.) - runforcover, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Please and thank you, finally someone pointed that out...
http://www.chevrolet.com/hhr/ - saifatlast, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Well rest assured then, helicopter blades aren't razor sharp.
- khyberkitsune, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0you expect English to be the native language when it's BAVARIAN Motor Works?
- roosterjm2k2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Personal flight will come sooner than later, but not in the form of space-movie-wannabe looking stuff. Personall helicopters have been around for a while now, and while not cheap, 25-30K is more reasonable than the real deal.
Prices will come down as competition enters the market. It doesnt take much motor to fly a helicopter. The Robinson R22, for example, carries 2 people, and only has 22HP to do it. Once the blades are at flying speed, it doesnt take much to keep them there, rotational inertia is doing all the hard work. -
