A friend I was in treatment with had a hickman catheter, which is very similar to this breast port, open the environment. I know that port contributed to the infection that eventually killed him. So an open port is a bad idea, even if for a "few weeks."

That said, in the interest of scientific accuracy, someone who has received an implant would be in overall good health. As I'm sure you know, someone in an otherwise weak state, is much more susceptible to infection.

I had always thought the disgusting-looking ripple effect was from just poor implants and techniques. Obviously this would also be a great thing for breast cancer survivors. The original blog article seems to make it out as something that can be constantly altered, but in reality it's just a way to gradually increase the size so it's not such a traumatic change to the surrounding tissue. I think it's a good idea. I would imagine the port is underneath the skin (subcutaneous) and cut out for a top-up.
