- eplawless, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20Photoshop's real strength is its use of vector layers and non-destructive effects, especially in design where you're not dealing with photos. While this has some good theoretical concepts, and for ease of explanation he uses raster effects, a better approach is to create a vector shape of your darker colour, hit blending options -> gradient overlay, create a white to transparent gradient, jack down the opacity on the gradient to around 10%, and choose vivid light for the gradient. This will give you the second colour he picks in his tutorial automatically, for any base colour, and if it's slightly off it's very simple to adjust the size/direction/type of gradient. Just a thought...
- TheReport, on 10/12/2007, -8/+22If you need a tutorial on how to make a Gradient then I wouldnt hire you if i was an employer. Id also laugh and tell you to get the ***** out of my office
- hexalite, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Next up... a Fill Bucket Tutorial!
- sedition, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10I don't know what you're complaining about. The KEY to Web2.0 is to have nice gradients on everything. This article is full of vital information for all sucessful web ventures!
/sarcasm - wedges, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10people need tutorials for this kind of *****? i guess that means i'll always have a job.
- eplawless, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10You're retarded.
- Powerdrift, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Instead of choosing another, brighter color, you can make the gradient white and set the layer type to overlay. Then change the opacity to something low.
- texture, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8this is the most retarded article i've ever seen on the front page of digg.
- ronaldpoi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Gotta second that... I thought it would be interesting, but... it's just about gradients =/
- SnOwie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I can write you a tutorial in 5 hours to explain a 5 sec Photoshop job like this guy, but I just rather not.
- Jaymoon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5This isn't how to make a gradient. It's how to make a *good* gradient.
You're probably one of the people that thinks "Eh, it doesn't matter what font I use on my website, they're all the same..." - mxcl, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5If my employer couldn't use apostrophes or capitalise "I" I'd quit!
Also, frankly, your attitude stinks of elitism. I agree that being able to do a gradient is pretty essential for web design, but the way you phrased makes you look like a *****. - Jaymoon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5@TheReport
If you talked to clients/customers/colleagues like that in your work office, I, and many others, wouldn't do business with you. - X111, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Typical blogwhore stuff. The summary; "use subtle gradients", then stretch it out to 'article' length, slap a couple of screenshots on and let the network pimp it.
Profit! - soupisgoodfood, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4A lot of people are giving this article crap, but it DOES illustrate an important point in graphic design: subtlety. The key isn't so much in the effect you use, but the way you use it. A good designer can use subtle effects on elements, that may not even be consciously noticed by the average viewer, to make a design more interesting and aesthetically pleasing.
- burke, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4That works, but with the example here, not only are you decreasing Saturation (a la white overlay), but you're increasing Value slightly, giving a more intense highlight color. It's subtle, but it does make a difference... or at least it seems to for me.
- 3pointRoss, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I think it is a good article, it shows people how to use subtle gradience over painfully obvious ones. Even though I know how to do this - it is nice to see tutorials that teach core items with the idea of taste and proper usage vs just the methods.
I am not sure it is front page digg worthy though? Did this happen simply because Rundle is a well known designer/blogger? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What does anyone on Digg know about subtle?
- stripes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ TheReport: sure you would, just not as a graphic artist. It looks like a tutorial roughly on the level of "getting use to the Unix shell". I wouldn't hire a programmer that needed to read it (well, I would, but maybe five years after that), but I _would_ hire an artist that had a little interest in what that Terminal program on the Mac was all about.
This is a better tutorial for people making their own web page, a programmer spiffing up their about box, or other non-profesionals. Oh, and maybe for a photographer who wants to "matte" his online gallery.
There is more then one valid audience in the world, eh? - crossers, on 07/21/2008, -0/+0http://www.shpe-sac.org

http://www.chasr.org/ - mgadalsky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Really good. Helpful tutorial, thanks!
- crossers, on 05/14/2008, -0/+0I don't understand what is means we want to monipulate!
- mxcl, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2FFS, these people don't always realise they will be criticised on digg by wankers when they write small articles for their peers.
- drastick, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2What kind of stupid comment is that? So under your philosophy people should just come out of the womb knowing how to use photoshop? Maybe take into consideration that the author of this tutorial is sick of seeing people that are going to use gradients regardless and is making an effort to at least show people how to use them the right way if they are going to use them. Not everyone is as cool as you obviously are and didn't know how to use photoshop before the doctor even cut the cord. Get off your high horse and be silent. Maybe if you knew how to read you would have seen the title of the post and saved yourself that precious 5 minutes of your of so important life. Hmm could an article with the title of "A Gradient Tutorial" be about gradients?? NO WAY!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1If you want to create gradients you should get out of the 1980s.
Seriously. - bluemech, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1There should be some better down-digging options. There is just too much crap getting to the frontpage.
- anagoge, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1"When we use gloss, gradients, or drop shadows it's because we're trying to manipulate your eye into thinking the 2D screen in front of you is a lush 3D landscape filled with volume..."
Or, more realistically because it's cool to look shiny and web 2.0, regardless of what your site is offering. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5It really taught me something. I realize now that a lot of my photoshop effects are exaggerated, and subtle effects work. Plus his gradient looks awesome! Now so does mine :D
- TheReport, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1"Also, frankly, your attitude stinks of elitism. I agree that being able to do a gradient is pretty essential for web design, but the way you phrased makes you look like a *****."
I am an elitest and I quite frankly dont give ***** if you think im a *****.
"If you talked to clients/customers/colleagues like that in your work office, I, and many others, wouldn't do business with you."
Good I dont do business with faggonwaggons
Looks like the Gradient fanboys got to this thread - spl72, on 10/12/2007, -11/+9that was crap!!! tells me us nothing!
- ThirdPrize, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Where is the best place to click in the area you need filled? I hear a red fill takes slightly longer than a green one. ;)
- brianasu, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Its really interesting because I don't think most people place much though into the gradation of a gradient.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Oooh! Gradients! How very 1984!
- SnOwie, on 10/12/2007, -12/+10reported as lame
- shm0edawg, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2I want five minutes of my life back.
Honestly, if you don't know how to create nice gradients, you shouldn't be using photoshop at all, and as a side note, raster gradients are as lame as this article.
nooch - jdonner, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Dumb graphics tutorial, but hey... what do I know... I run two graphic sites with over 3,5 million visitors/per year.
- everfresh59, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2I've been using Photoshop for 5 years now, didn't know you could do gradients in it.
LOL, I kidd, I kidd..... - IQ70, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1While we are at it, can someone please help me?
I need a gradient to use as a PowerPoint background. i tried going through the deviantart site and liked a few MacOSx wallpapers with gradients and designs but they ofcourse have the Apple logo. I tried making something similar but when I use it as a background in PowerPoint it does not render as well as it renders onscreen with Photoshop.
Can someone please help? - PoshNeya, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0try google.
- PurpleMeteor, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1"When we use gloss, gradients, or drop shadows it's because we're trying to manipulate your eye ..."
Oh no, it's just because you lack imagination and talent, that's why you do like everyone else. - sawyer3, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2@Powerdrift
if you weren't such an assclown, i'd wouldn't bother responding, but since you've proven yourself worthy, i will.
from your elementary comment, it sounds to me like you've been a jealous person all your life, and have despised the fact that you have never come in first place, while everyone else skates by you with ease. someone always has to make the first comment to an article, so your comment is, well, less than worthless.
keep truckin' mr. 2nd place. - Powerdrift, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1huh?
- burke, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1you can never know everything... clearly ;)
- sawyer3, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2@Powerdrift
"huh?" ... exactly.
if you are going to make lame comments, like this one or your first comment, defend them... don't just hit and run... it's unbecoming. - shmatt, on 10/12/2007, -14/+3Or, you could just learn how to use Photoshop and do yuor own gradients. If your grads looks that bad then maybe you should learn programming or something.
lame. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -16/+2WOW! TheReport has the ONLY good comment! Nice flame!
BTW! The gradients in said article do suck(too subtle, and boring, and too gloss-ish, not gradient-ish), and why the hell is this on the main page at the top?! Digg to needs to work on it's ranking system. - sawyer3, on 10/12/2007, -21/+4this was a good refresher read. thnx
- Powerdrift, on 10/12/2007, -23/+5That or you wanted the first comment.
