- AFrei, on 02/22/2008, -18/+137This is one of the reasons i support obama. I'm sick of serifed fonts. They don't really use sans-serif fonts in mass media. But sans-serif fonts are the future. In some more liberal countries as well as on the internet people have begun to use sans-serif fonts. And it still maintains a level of professionalism, unlike comic sans. My personal favorite is Helvetica, but thats just me. And because this is such an excellent step forward i think this would make a great slogan, Sans-serif: the font of the future, the font of change. /sarcasm based on the minutiae of typfaces
- Jordan117, on 02/22/2008, -3/+100Rudy Giuliani preferred Impact Bold. In 911-point font.
(But he's also a fan of Wingdings. Q33NY and all that.) - gldfshnpcklejar, on 02/22/2008, -3/+90Comic Sans: Guarantee your bid for presidency fails.
- cnot3, on 02/22/2008, -2/+62Is America really ready for a minority font?
- likwidfuzion, on 02/22/2008, -2/+61Bush uses Wingdings. No one ever understands what he's trying to say.
- HellDonut, on 02/22/2008, -26/+67Comic Sans!
- blaze03, on 02/22/2008, -2/+28There are some serif fonts I love such as Georgia. But yea - a nice modern, bold san-serif font like Gotham pretty much screams "looking to the future."
Clinton could probably be described as Arial. Yea, you're san-serif, but you're also lacking any sort of personality whatsoever. You're completely non-inspiring and an embodiment of the status quo. Also, a cold-hearted biotch. - nospinhere, on 02/22/2008, -5/+28We are talking about what font he uses in his banners now? Wow, I thought I would never say this but this obsession for Obama may actually be worse then Digg's obsession with Ron Paul a few months back.
- jamesdew, on 02/22/2008, -1/+20one of the guy I work with uses Comic Sans for all his e-mails. Can you really take an e-mail serioudly if its written in Comic Sans?
- monospaced, on 02/22/2008, -1/+19It was the type of the future back when it was first made popular, over 100 years ago, and sans-serif type pretty much defined "modern" as we know it in design today.
- gloomybear, on 02/22/2008, -7/+24You're obviously not aware of the role of advertising and psychology. The choice of fonts conveys subliminal messages, whether at a wedding or a political campaign. Just compare the Obama font with the Clinton and McCain ones. If voting were as simple as picking fonts, Obama wins!

- blaze03, on 02/22/2008, -2/+19Also check out Obama's amazing website: http://www.barackobama.com/index.php
The people running his campaign seriously have impeccable taste in all aspects of design, not just typography.
Compare to Hillary's site: http://www.hillaryclinton.com/?splash=1 - JPBimmer, on 02/22/2008, -6/+21You mean favorite typeface... right?
- tumatakuru, on 02/22/2008, -2/+17I'm sure I have seen this font somewhere else. Obama has obviousy plagiarised it.
- TheWhoHa, on 02/22/2008, -1/+16To piss me off.
- trammell, on 02/22/2008, -4/+17Helvetica was my favorite film of 2007. I attended the premiere in Austin and purchased the DVD on its release. The DVD extras alone are worth twice the cost.
Hoefler and Frere-Jones are incredibly talented and you see their ability to draw infleunces from outside type design in Gotham. - richbradshaw, on 02/22/2008, -1/+14Posting twice: Guarantee that Digg's comment system fails.
- jtbndy, on 02/22/2008, -0/+12Complete Gotham package for 1 computer costs $400 bucks. Jesus.
- commitone, on 02/22/2008, -3/+13JOKEWOOD ROCKS!
- cvindustries, on 02/22/2008, -1/+10This is exactly what Digg used to be all about. Finding obscure bits of news that every newspaper overlooks, particularly things a bit nerdy. Tonight's debates haven't happened yet, so if you want to read about them, then you're limited to punditry talk, so go to the MSM to read about it, I'm sure it being covered really well over there.
- bobthedino, on 02/22/2008, -0/+9Well I think you're probably both right and wrong when you say you're missing something! An essential part of good typography is that it must not be a barrier to your reading of the words, the content... the font effectively disappears and operates on a subliminal level to make you feel something about what you're reading. Achieving this subconscious effect is non-trivial and part of the art of type design. Check out the first two posts here, about the different typefaces the candidates are using: http://www.typography.com/ask/
- h4mx0r, on 02/22/2008, -4/+12Wingdings are the way to go!
- stalefries, on 02/22/2008, -2/+9So far, about 1070 people.
- monospaced, on 02/22/2008, -1/+8You are correct.
- lava, on 02/22/2008, -2/+8I guess I'll have to download that now.
- cvindustries, on 02/22/2008, -0/+6WHAT ARE THESE STRANGE LITTLE LETTERS YOU ARE USING IN YOUR COMMENT? I'VE NEVER SEEN THEM BEFORE.
- WriterSD, on 02/22/2008, -1/+7I dugg it because it's creative, funny, and different than the things I usually see on Digg. :)
- wild, on 02/22/2008, -0/+6Actually, Cheeseburger, there is a very real reason to be vigilant about using the right word. I work in advertising as a designer. If I tell an agency partner they need to get me the fonts, that means I need the digital files to set my type in the right style. If I tell them they need to get me the typeface, that means I need to know what the type style actually is.
We send about 300 emails a day. The clearer we are, the more efficient the results. - goat2, on 02/22/2008, -0/+6obviously youve never seen some of the apple articles on digg.
- 3amboo, on 02/22/2008, -2/+8Times New Roman makes you a newspaper
- ampmob, on 02/22/2008, -0/+5Look to the Futura
- CheeseburgerBro, on 02/22/2008, -2/+7Sadly, JPBimmer, that battle is over. Accuracy lost, ignorance won.
Irregardless, I think most peeples no what wee mean anyways when its said like that, like "font" instead of "typeface". Linguistic prescriptivists are jurks, and their's no raison to rilly care about witch word is used when or whatever. - Kelmon, on 02/22/2008, -6/+11Stupid question but what is the point of Wingdings anyway?
- CheeseburgerBro, on 02/22/2008, -0/+5"Already used"?
Typefaces aren't chosen on a first come, first served basis. In fact, it is not unusual for many different parties to make use of the same typeface, instead of the childish alternative of "calling Fontsies." - monospaced, on 02/22/2008, -1/+6Type is powerful and accounts for most of our communications today. One might not be aware of it, but many choices made are based on design, and good typography (font stuff) is extremely important to my line of work and is highly regarded in the design field. Good to see Gotham being set (used) nicely.
- coltraning, on 02/22/2008, -1/+6Didn't Kerry use Georgia for his font?
- gak001, on 02/22/2008, -0/+5That was so bad, I had to digg it.
- HisTumness, on 02/22/2008, -0/+5I wish we would start moving toward using Futura for everything so every day I can feel like I live in a Wes Anderson film.
- scairborn, on 02/22/2008, -0/+5Speaking of fonts... I just watched the documentary "Helvetica" ... awesome film. And its hilarious watching the German's get all worked up over "***** fonts"
- bjs3171, on 02/22/2008, -0/+5Hillary got her ass booed last night for bringing that up.
- Nepenthes, on 02/22/2008, -3/+8Is anyone else baffled by some peoples obsession with fonts? There must be something amazing about them because some people go just crazy for them. Oh well, add them to the list of things I don't understand along with train spotting, birdwatching...
- pastasauce, on 02/22/2008, -3/+8He should use Comic Sans. It shows that you are fun, and all you have to do to be creative is to keep clicking the forward button on those email jokes Nancy Pelosi keeps sending you.
- smurfsahoy, on 02/22/2008, -1/+5Why the serif hating? I happen to be very fond of calligraphic hands, which are the heaviest serif users of all. And very professional.
- wild, on 02/22/2008, -0/+4Jobs? Nada.
My God is Johann Gutenberg. - Naidel, on 02/22/2008, -3/+7I find it funny how that post warns against demagoguery and empty rhetoric but is full of its own. Comparing Obama to Hitler, are we? Please.
The US may not be czarist Russia or Iran under the shah, but it sure as hell is suffering under one of the worst administrations in its history. - cadmiumpaint, on 02/22/2008, -0/+4I wish Gotham was more accessible....its so expensive as is everything else from that Foundry. {sigh} they do make some really great stuff, if you have the money to pay for it..
- catachip, on 02/22/2008, -0/+4You're mistaken in what film we're talking about then. It was released for the first time in 2007. Check any resource, IMDB, wikipedia etc. Maybe you're thinking about another documentary about the design and aesthetics of font?
- inactive, on 02/22/2008, -4/+8well obviously Barack Obama's favorite font is front page newsworthy. I say how dare you, you blasphemer, how else can we sleep at night without this vital knowledge ?
- jjpertusch, on 02/22/2008, -0/+4now THIS is a political story that belongs on digg
