- samadam, on 10/10/2007, -4/+54The CSS "tables are evil" motto actually threw me off the other day. I was trying to make a chart of numbers using divs and spans. I had no idea how to. Turns out tables aren't "evil" when used for tabular data!
- mediaspree, on 10/10/2007, -3/+53I style my tables with tablecloths
- positron, on 10/10/2007, -0/+27You're better off having not got the job.
- nutzngum, on 10/10/2007, -0/+18that's what I've always said too - but i went for an interivew with a rather large website and their lead designer is a css-only kind of guy, apparently. The interview was going well, I was asked how I would lay out a specific page based on the details provided and I suggested a table for the tabular data and everything else in divs and spans. His face dropped, the interview came to a screeching halt - "we don't use tables - EVAR." I was thanked for my time and never heard a peep from them.
- XHashmeerX, on 10/10/2007, -1/+19No *****.
- thailand1972, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13The guy (the interviewer) is an A-grade *****. The web development field is sorely lacking people with common sense and instead is full of people holding hammers who see every problem as a nail.
- Otto, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12How many times does this need to be explained? A "digg" indicates a level of interest in the person doing the digg. It does NOT indicate that they a) read the material or b) liked it.
You have this page on your Profile that shows everything you've dugg. So, by digging something, it means that you may come back and read the material later, when the site is back up. - Otto, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11There's nothing wrong with a table for tabular data. But don't use a table for layout. That's not what it's for.
- BobTurtle, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9I had to learn this lesson as well. I suppose that's the price we pay when instructions have to be simplified for the lowest common denominator. Reminds me of the time I picked up my little brother from school and he freaked out because I was drinking a Coke and, as he informed me, I shouldn't be "drinking and driving".
- NoodleGuy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7The mantra I always heard was "Table Based Layouts are EVIL!" not that tables themselves are evil.....
- magic6435, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5after trying to cheek out Veerle's page for 20 min i come to digg and OooooOOOOOooO i see...... damn diggers
- theWaterboy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5You're right, but there are self-righteous CSS 'guru's who think everything, including data should be formatted using CSS ... and they are dumb-asses.
- rossnyc, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4big fan of veerle but how bad is her hosting to not be able to handle a little digg?
- christopherjohn, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3he is a she =) and the tables are actually quite nice.
- cwmonkey, on 10/10/2007, -4/+7table { display: none; }
- AdamFromMyspace, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Looks kind of like a ghetto ASP.NET GridView.
- sint4x, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I think your widget is overboard for most tables.
- rspeed, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Yeah, I remember a coworker was asking for help with using divs and CSS to build a table. He was actually creating classes which had the display attribute changed to things like table-cell and table-row. Quite amusing.
- Chickenlip, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5Though hand-coding tables might be fun and all, I almost always use YUI's DataTable widget: http://developer.yahoo.com/yui/datatable/
It handles sorting, pagination, scrolling, and a few other really handy things for you. All of the css stuff documented in the article can still be applied, though I think implementing everything as he stated is a bit overboard for most tables. - stoph009, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2i can read it
- j3one, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Good point, also Veerle is off the hook.
- someguy9, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Get a good look Costanza
- cbartlett, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3If you wait a really long time, the page will eventually come up. At least it did for me.
- norbiu, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I sometimes have a hard time loading up her site when it's NOT on Digg. The hosting is pretty crappy.
- Chewie67, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Dead, and no working mirrors.
- bradkovach, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I don't know why people can't see it: Tables are fine when used as they are supposed to be, which is as a means to display data. Duh.
- fkr3, on 10/10/2007, -5/+6Wtf..... in case anyone's confused CSS for tables is much the same as CSS for any other element. About the only difference is vertical-align works with table cells.
As for accessible tables, it ain't rocket science... - nhassan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1check it before hand
- scoot2006, on 10/10/2007, -4/+5if you use tables for layout, you pretty much suck. period. tables for tabular data only FTW
- crossers, on 07/16/2008, -0/+0Very useful information. thanks for article!

- marioestrada, on 10/10/2007, -2/+0not dead, but sloooow as hell
- rmw132, on 10/10/2007, -6/+4I love how this article keeps getting diggs, yet the site has been down since before it had 30 diggs. Just goes to show people on here digg for titles without even clicking.
- maverick999, on 10/10/2007, -4/+2Slow, but working mirror - http://veerle.duoh.com.nyud.net/blog/comments/a_css_styled_table_version_2/
- Samn, on 10/10/2007, -4/+1Initially, I didn't read "damn diggers." I read something else. And I thought "Since when was black people crashing web servers the hot new stereotype?"
- jcblitz, on 10/10/2007, -7/+2This link died at 40ish diggs when I first checked and some how it's up to 151 at the time of me posting this. Are people just assuming they like the story and digging it regardless of the actual content?
- TomP, on 10/10/2007, -7/+2no comments and the sites down? http://www.duggmirror.com
