- Rmo4, on 03/27/2009, -1/+25"But what and when went wrong?" Wow, that sentence sucks.
- purkel, on 03/27/2009, -3/+22Wow... AOL has been dying since the 90's. Let them RIP.
- trolleyfan, on 03/26/2009, -12/+29AOL's day was over two decades ago...let it die, please.
- KevinMalone, on 03/27/2009, -2/+16tldr:
AOL died when broadband came to the masses. Once the 56k left, so did AOL - seamustry, on 03/27/2009, -0/+10At least we don't get those free CD's in junk mail anymore...
- ryancawdor, on 03/27/2009, -1/+9WHO CARES?
- inactive, on 03/27/2009, -2/+10two decades ago would be 1989; you mean one decade.
- jeremyduffy, on 03/27/2009, -2/+9What went wrong with AOL?! HA HA HA HA!!!
Oh sorry, you were serious? God I could go on and on, but if I had to pin it to one thing, it would be that it's a crappy product. - papashawn, on 03/27/2009, -0/+6AOL is still going fairly strong today, just under different brand names.
If you've ever visited Engadget, you're supporting AOL. - lozengeoflove, on 03/27/2009, -1/+6And Yahoo never should have tried to become google.
- DarkBlueAnt, on 03/27/2009, -0/+4AOL sucks and has always sucked. People only bought into it because the Internet was new to most people in the 90's and nobody knew how to use it. Lots of people thought AOL was the Internet itself.
People are smarter now... except my boss, who I can't talk out of using it. - Snakeyes11, on 03/27/2009, -1/+5AOL in general is a bad service. My grandparents use it. I heard "You've got mail." at their house and I shivered a little bit.
- j0hn, on 03/27/2009, -0/+3The only thing I use AOL for is their internet Radio. I like music at night, and AOL's service is the only one that doesn't shut off automatically after a few hours of listening.
- kylere, on 03/27/2009, -4/+7AOL went wrong when they let their users onto the internet, we didn't want them and they were not bright enough to realize the difference.
- billraydrums, on 03/27/2009, -3/+6I think Yahoo needs to go the way of AOL- deprecated.
- KonstantinLevin, on 03/26/2009, -1/+4Crazy rant, that's for sure.
- lornefs, on 03/27/2009, -1/+4AOL was founded in 83.
I am actually surprised that it's still around. I haven't gotten free diskette in years. - mississippiman, on 03/27/2009, -0/+3Yeah back in the day those free diskettes were great
- quadsixmafia, on 03/27/2009, -1/+4AOL needs to RIP. May they always be remembered for "You've got mail!", "Goodbye!", and the AIM sounds.
- thebeginning, on 03/27/2009, -1/+4He brought up some good points, but I disagree with a few... particularly the part about marketing under Netscape, AIM, etc. Nobody wants that anymore, and Netscape was pretty crappy in the first place, so no serious internet user is going to be drawn into that.
AOL still has some leverage, they just need to wake up and realize that they're not as awesome as they think. - BxBoy, on 03/27/2009, -1/+3or using WinAmp.
- inactive, on 03/27/2009, -0/+2Because they billed by the minute.
- igjoe, on 03/27/2009, -3/+5And Yahoo Never Should Have Tried To Become Google
- inactive, on 03/27/2009, -1/+3Senior netizens
- BxBoy, on 03/27/2009, -1/+3it's a shame, they were good as coasters.
- kwasmosis, on 03/27/2009, -1/+3For sure! How many people on digg had AOL at one point, and then couldn't discontinue their service? Had to sit on the phone with customer service for hours...
AOL effin blows. Worst Company EVER! Hate them.Son's a...Moth...RANT!
>.< - wonderbriefs, on 03/27/2009, -3/+4I'm about 99% sure that was meant to be tongue-in-cheek sarcasm, so I dugg you up.
- thenativeraver, on 03/27/2009, -1/+2I blame AOL for the oceans of retarded illiterates that now consume up precious bandwidth.
I hope AOL goes down in flames. - AbsurdParadox, on 03/27/2009, -2/+3AOL is only good for one thing... the AIM network. Even the real AIM app sucks.
- x00x, on 03/27/2009, -0/+1....and ...yet.....It.... seems....no....good......deed....goes,...unpunished.....
sad, but overwhelmingly the way things are in this cold cruel world of ours, that despite your act of chivalry, of magnanimity, of camaraderie - of one internet entity reaching out to another, you get of all things, dugg down. Jeeeezzzz. - Rixta, on 03/27/2009, -1/+2Did it? I never looked.....
- TWallaceWD, on 03/27/2009, -0/+1I, too, would like to know when went wrong.
- redfuzzydog, on 03/27/2009, -0/+1Now I know how the Unabomber is spending his free time! Love his latest manifesto against the evils of the modern internet and the call to action to return to AOL's warm, caring hands.
- Kmap, on 03/28/2009, -0/+1Yeah. It's ***** and you know it.
- strangewill, on 03/27/2009, -0/+1"Nullsoft"
UGH. A sad day. - c010rb1indusa, on 03/27/2009, -4/+3AOL is the Iraq War of the internet. Quick successful initial victory and a slow and costly exit strategy.
They had no plan to adapt to the broadband shift, compete with standalone browsers or increase the reliability and stability of the AOL program (***** crashed all the time)...they failed to establish themselves as a legitimate ISP and after everyone was done with their internet training wheels, AOL failed to have an alternative. - x00x, on 03/27/2009, -1/+1Thought to myself: hmm. Apparently some digg users are ALSO white-trashy denizens of some unknown web trailer park..
- doshindude, on 03/27/2009, -0/+1My walmart still carries them O_o
- ousthouse, on 03/27/2009, -1/+1What went wrong? So called "evil telecom companies" got to work and started providing high speed service straight to the internet years before AOL did.
- bigteebo, on 03/27/2009, -0/+1Why did they always advertise xyz free hours/minutes/seconds instead of the common 30 days? Is it so they can brag about a higher number being initially free, regardless of measurment?
- BobDle, on 03/27/2009, -2/+3{S whocares
- Stan57, on 03/30/2009, -0/+0The main reason so many people like the AOL client is because of there email client and there family filtering. As far as AOLs down fall is because of broadband and there failure to listen to members input. Its just that simple. Before there was broadband AOL was king and could do anything they wanted and they didnt care about members input at all. So when broadband came AOL payed the price of there complacency. And of course the speed broadband gave us. The AOL haters had zip to do with it at all.
- inactive, on 03/27/2009, -0/+1It's easy to judge something in hindsight. Author's just another armchair CEO.
But yes, AOL still sucks. - stonewaljacksn, on 03/27/2009, -1/+1i know man...AOL was like so totally mainstream duuddeee. they are a bunch of sellouttss. its supposed to all be about the love of the internet man and they went for the money. thats so lammeee. those sheep don't know about real computing...theyre not underground mann, and that's not cool
- diggdugg35, on 03/28/2009, -0/+0April Fools!
- Disoculated, on 03/27/2009, -0/+0None of you people understand what the AOL service is these days. It's a social networking site that has a dial-up feature. That simple. Nobody calls it that, but that's what it is. And it despite all these comments about how dead it is, it makes craptons of profit. How many social networking sites do that?
- inactive, on 03/27/2009, -2/+2AOL stills sucks
- footbag01, on 03/27/2009, -3/+3AOL still exists?
