- Tychee, on 12/05/2008, -3/+9Really great ideas. Throw Objects around to Look for Happy Accidents is a cool one.
- inactive, on 12/05/2008, -0/+4...designs?

What is it man? Finish it! - mindpuzzle, on 12/05/2008, -3/+6good ideas.
- franklymister, on 12/05/2008, -3/+5No, that's what you do when you don't know how to design.
- franklymister, on 12/05/2008, -0/+2Being a designer is not about learning Photoshop and throwing objects around looking for accidents.
If you want to be a designer, study design. If just you want to play with Photoshop and make a cool looking header for your blog, then yes, this is the right way to go about it. - franklymister, on 12/05/2008, -2/+4Or you could actually approach design as a problem-solving exercise, think about what you're actually trying to achieve, and take the right steps to get to something awesome without the guesswork.
I've been a designer for fourteen years. If I had to stare at a blank canvas for hours and throw around hundreds of random PSDs to get the answer, I would have lost my mind years ago.
Design is a process, learn it. - franklymister, on 12/05/2008, -0/+2Scientists don't sit in their labs randomly pouring one chemical into another to "see what happens."
For every accident that leads to a discovery, there are thousands of discoveries that were reached methodically, and thousands of accidents that were thrown out.
For that matter, design and science are two different things. I would assume from your comment that you do not have a career in either field. - BenMills, on 12/05/2008, -0/+1I very much agree but you need to look at PSDTUTS target audience, new people who want to be designers, rather then spending a while explaining in detail design processes its easier to give them "simpler" ideas such as "Throw Objects around to Look for Happy Accidents", your right that really will not work in the long term, but if newer designer try out different "random" ideas they might start to see what works in general and start to form their own design process.
So I would say its not really a terrible thing to include in a tutorial for new designers. - socialrebel, on 12/05/2008, -0/+1I learned a very thorough design process at UCI but once I began freelancing and getting work experience, I threw out some things I learned in class but kept some others. Every designer has their own unique process. Some thrive on randomly tossing graphics and PSDs together, while some produce excellent work with an extremely rigid process.
I'm somewhere in the middle. :) - neliago, on 02/13/2009, -0/+1Goog techniques.
http://www.markeas.com - jebaird, on 12/05/2008, -2/+2#8 is a good reminder, It gets really old doing the same things over and over
- bluesatin, on 12/05/2008, -1/+1You're right, it's not like a great amount of scientific discoveries were by accident.
Oh wait. :b - romantanner424, on 02/21/2009, -0/+0Thanks a lot for this list. Very usefull

- diggater, on 12/05/2008, -3/+0Very interesting.
- webkami, on 12/05/2008, -5/+2Actually a very good article, however I am annoyed by people having "Sad Accidents" in their designs and then being proud of it.
*Look how cool this double shadow looks* - inactive, on 12/05/2008, -4/+0zzzzz digg has seen far better ones of this ilk
- lovemorgul, on 12/05/2008, -7/+3Thus every web designer should be equipped to make qualified and informed
