Make ***** up. - Otto, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17Uh huh. And how many hits do you think millionddollarhomepage gets now that he sold all that ad space? It's one thing to be a fad, it's another thing to make a site that lasts.
- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -6/+16"less then 15 characters"
'Million Dollar Homepage' has 21 characters, so i'd bet that guy is kicking himself and his million dollars he didn't listen to this advice :P - CharlesDarwin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12I guess if he had called it milliondollarho.com, it would have lasted.
"Just put "bay" in the name and you'll be successful, lol."
Apple's new site is going to be named iBay. Now that is successful! - Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9"I guess if he had called it milliondollarho.com, it would have lasted."
She must be good if she's a millionaire!! - Dkcobra, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I tried out the random domain name generator and it gave me "milkvampire.com". Quite amusing.
- Agret, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Lorem Ipsum of course
- vspazv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4And just make sure not to get on this list (unless thats really what you want...)

- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8How do you create a site without a name? What do you put in the mockups?
- Agret, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Sounds like a lame name, I doubt anyone will bid on it.
- hagrin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Localhost owns me.
- TennBikeBerk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4It's working for me with Firefox.
- Serendipity, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I prefer to use a word mixer than a word generator because it yields better results with generating unique names.
http://unique-name.perceptus.ca/word-mixer.php - modshark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If these 5 reasons actually helped anyone they should probably think about quitting anything web related now.

I guess what I'm trying to say is the web in general is extremely competitive, and these tips are utterly basic, something that should be AUTOMATIC in your mind without joe blow internet having to tell you. Its no wonder there are so many useless domains still getting bought every day.
If your serious about getting a good domain name try droplists, not sure why these weren't brought up (inexperience on the writers part), a droplist allows you to find domain names that were previously taken by another owner and let go or forgotten about. Face the facts here, the best domains have been taking for years. Think hard when making a decision, alot more goes into it then posted in this digg. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The correct phrase is "fewer than 15 characters."
less != fewer
Don't believe it? Try asking for fewer butter on your toast next time. - GrinningFool, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Is tequine anything like tequila?
- SirThom, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3You can't transfer domains within 60 days of its registration (or another transfer), so good luck. =/
- tehbawb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I got "undersidepope.com"
- SirThom, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4*link gets submitted to digg*
(four hours later)
*all the good domains are taken* - cumbrowski, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Very good tips, especially for newbies. Not using "hyphens" in the domain name (if you want people to remember the domain name and not SE's) should be mentioned.
- tylerni7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2If you host it yourself, then you might never have a domain. I went half a year before deciding to register a name for my website. Before that, it'd just be the IP address...
- findhostcoupons, on 03/21/2009, -0/+1Good naming techniques and useful recommendations! Thanks for sharing!
- Korayem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I disagree.
Systm IS a cool name ...ask my brains if you dont beleive me :) - Suzie18, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The 60 day rule only applies to transfers to OTHER domain registries. You can do an internal transfer to another person's account at the same registry, no problem. But I see you've registered the domain at GoDaddy, and so it only cost you $9 max - so not sure why you said it cost $15?
- Chakz, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4English thank you.
- vinny, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1The site looks like crap. The designer obviously doesn't know much about CSS.
- Korayem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dito that...hyphens always get forgotten.
- cvecve, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I'm familiar with ICANN's regulations, but I find your made-up ones fascinating. Tell me more about the 60-day rule.
- VeganG, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2This should be hosted at commonsense.com
(no, I really don't know what's on that page) - nvzblity, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1ovarianblouse.com. I almost snorted out my cup of jo.
- infonography, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ever see the movie Demolition Man? http://www.tacobellrecords.com. Yeah it's a joke.
- Shrill, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2A lot of common sense, but some pretty good links. Personally I find the name carbonpipeline.com less than appealing though, no offense to the owner but I think he could have done a little better.
- gambl0r, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2You can build a logo from a site design as easily as you can build a site design around a logo. Just take elements of one and use it in the other, so the site's domain name isn't *required* to come first. It's most logical to come first, but for your own personal site, or something that the 'identity' doesn't matter too much, it's not a big deal.
- Gardenhead, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I like how We-make-money-not-art totally defies this list, and still manages to be a really cool site. They have to have the worst website address in my frequent site list.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3That's generic filler text for paragraphs. The name is the identity.
- pixelsoup, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1"Easy to Remember. Easy to Spell."
Good (and painfully obvious) advice.
But author's example "…Kevin Rose's “systm.org”. is neither easy to spell or easy to remember since there are 1 million meaningless names with "system" in it. Lame. - vinilios, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0interesting
- SP33DFR34K, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Go-Apple-Google-Piratebay-Nintendo.com or Die-Sony-Microsoft-RIAA-MPAA.com
Guarantee tons of hits to your site. - ventro, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2POLL: Do you like domain names that have english language words, or do you like domains that have made up words?
- scottylist, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0I take it the owner of http://www.TheRecordBreakingDomain.com didn't read this.
- seemsArtless, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Which do you consider 'digg' -- made up or English? (The Digg spell check didn't have a problem with it)
- brandizzle, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1This site doesn't work in FF.
