41 Amazing Tilt-shift miniature faking photographs (PICS)
digital-artist-toolbox.com — Believe it or not, all of these photos are of real life-size locations or objects. The technique of tilt-shift miniature faking makes the life-sized look like a miniature scale model. The process involves using Photoshop to fake a shallow depth of field and punching up the color saturation. The results are truly amazing.

- DelMonte, on 07/20/2008, -0/+3Isn't that part of the trick, to have exaggerated soft focus effects?
- ZeeZee2k, on 07/20/2008, -0/+10I made one myself, it's not as cool, but still pretty fun

- cdahlkvist, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1I agree with adikt. Yours is better than most on the post. I especially like that it is off center and tilted a bit.
- theodenking, on 07/20/2008, -2/+51. Take nice photo.

- hwy9nightkid, on 07/20/2008, -1/+22some of these were not too good, but a few could fool me.

- xaeon, on 07/20/2008, -0/+3I'm convinced that a few of those were actually just photos of miniatures.
- jbrand45, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1That train and tunnel looked particularly miniature-esque.
- CreativeGuy, on 07/26/2008, -0/+1Congrats. What gave it away for you? Was it the fact that one of the photos actually showed a brick wall in the background where the sky should be?

- OctoLincoln, on 07/20/2008, -0/+6kentomatic is right. These are stills from Olivo Barbieri's amazing helicopter footage with a fancy lens that flattens the foreground and focuses across a huge depth -- fooling the eye into to thinking distances are smaller.
Heres video of his Las Vegas piece:
http://www.sundancechannel.com/videos/230312601- thesha1, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1damn thats cool.
- Drone007, on 07/20/2008, -0/+5I think part of this must lie on the photo you choose to do the effect on.
Choose the right one and you get a very impressive effect.- emmy12, on 07/25/2008, -0/+0The angle that the picture was shot from and the lighting have a huge impact on how well you can produce the "fake miniature" the effect.
- Imnick, on 07/20/2008, -0/+5Wow some of those are absolutely stunning... the red car picture blew my mind.
- Corbel, on 07/20/2008, -3/+0VIctem of the digg bomb
- tghd, on 07/20/2008, -0/+8If anybody cares this has nothing to do with shifting. Tilt creates the miniature effect while shift is mainly used to create distortion free panoramics. I and many photographers use shift lenses for architectural work, both interiors and exteriors. The reason people use the term tilt-shift is because the lenses used to create such affects usually tilt and shift. I would be willing to bet that the majority of those lenses aren't purchased for their tilt effect but more for their shifting capabilities. Ive seen very few professional pictures employ tilt, while I see hundreds of published photographs use shift.
- bieber, on 07/20/2008, -0/+2This is correct. Tilt is generally used more with view cameras, where you can tilt the lens and film planes separately to achieve effectively unlimited depth-of-field along a slanted surface (the Schumpflug effect, I think they call it)

- rayzha, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1The one of the car completely threw me off.
Could have been better if the original image was posted too - endus, on 07/20/2008, -0/+10Shameless self promotion...one of mine...
http://www.desolatemetropolis.com/dm/archives/2008 ...- datagod, on 07/20/2008, -0/+2Those are awesome pics...thanks for sharing!
- FoxOrian, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1That's actually pretty tastefully done, you kept the blur to a more believable level, though the background blur seems to occur a little too sharply at the end of that street. Nice, though.
A little shameless self-promotion of my own:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/fox-orian/2589097697/ ... - endus, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1Yea I worked on that for a while. Meant to shoot more while I was in detroit but oh well.
I like yours as well, though what the hell is that text in the image? LOL. Either way, interesting tone to that one.
- CAisBacK, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1God damn it Digg you broke this too?

- V-Mob, on 07/20/2008, -5/+3I made one for the first time and here's how it looked:
http://www.familyvacationco.com/Africa/africafamil ... - bj00rn, on 07/20/2008, -2/+4Buried for the use of the word "Amazing".
- aaronadms, on 07/20/2008, -1/+2Buried for the use of ""Amazing"".
- CrushThemTorg, on 07/20/2008, -1/+1If you posted that on Flickr, you'd probably be getting an internet handjob right now.
- Zounas, on 07/20/2008, -1/+4Amateurish at the best. Does any of them know that you should blur according to the object's/surface's distance to the camera and not by image dimensions? Looks ugly when only half of a tree is blurred.
- worldnick, on 07/20/2008, -1/+1Now if they could only do it the other way around... I can always tell miniatures in movies. Even miniature water looks obvious. If you ZOOM IN ON WATER YOU CAN TELL YOU ARE ZOOMED IN!!
- cbeach, on 07/20/2008, -0/+3Blurring the top and bottom of a photo does not come close to a real DOF effect. A lot of these images look really clumsy. Why not just take photos of miniatures with a lens of decent aperture hence giving you authentic DOF effects?
People's first dabblings with Photoshop "techniques" are one of digg's annoying trends.
Thanks for this one, Mr Babyman (and your army of digg bots)...- ScannerMobs, on 08/05/2008, -0/+0Exactly.. it seems hardly anyone who uses this technique actually understands DOF and the way it works. Which is sad really as photographers probably should know, and it's not exactly a difficult concept. There are however a couple of really excellent examples in there, just a shame that every mofo with a copy of CS3 will be giving it a shot, cheapening the results of those who are actually studying this interesting technique.
Just another chance for people to shout 'photoshop!' when they see any photo that is in anyway different or good, and discounting it as some sort of automatic cheat system to yield good photos.
Assbuttons.

- firebert69, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1well some I think were real but others were very fake. Some were very obviously lego pieces. and I wouldnt actual call something photoshopped a "real" photo
- senkmajer, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1None of them looked real. Some were pretty, but none of them looked real.
