- MrSmileGuy, on 05/24/2009, -5/+58Doesn't get any better than this. Minimalist web design >>>>>>>> overloaded flash intro's and interfaces.
- xaeon, on 05/24/2009, -4/+41Wow, a blank page. That really IS minimalist.
http://rorr.im - MikeDugg, on 05/24/2009, -1/+32Digg is becoming reduced to a website that only posts links like this.
'40 amazing websties'
'10 reasons why beer is good for you'
'6 ways to go to college for free' - annjay, on 05/24/2009, -4/+34These are so beautiful and cool. Most of my clients don't like these type of designs but I really love to design simple and minimalistic designs.
- jcounterman, on 05/24/2009, -1/+23Digg: Enough with the ads that expand to cover your content. Enough with the ads that that automatically blare sound just by rolling over them. THIS is what forces people to use ad-blocking software.
Subtle, content-specific ads are just fine and even useful sometimes. Some ***** ad about microsoft enterprise solutions at 80db is not. - philodygmn, on 05/24/2009, -7/+26Minimalist != plain. Doesn't anyone even ever use a colored background tastefully? Not a single one that wasn't either black or white and virtually no color in the design whatsoever. Blasé!
- Daerion, on 05/24/2009, -1/+19Digg should really have it's own "Page unreachable" bury category.
- MofS, on 08/13/2009, -5/+23buried for not including Google.
- inkswamp, on 05/24/2009, -1/+17I can't believe you're getting buried for that. People seem to equate minimalism with white space and simplicity which isn't the case. Minimalism can actually result in fairly complex designs and work. These are clean site designs and very easy on the eyes, but none are particularly good examples of minimalism.
- shawnfromnh, on 05/24/2009, -0/+13I think most sites should be minimalist.
You go to a site like http://www.IGN.com and it's gone so overboard on content like a lot of myspace profiles it's more like a ***** than a webpage. - SPThom, on 05/24/2009, -0/+7I dunno... In my opinion, having an all-grey, all-white, or all-black site is not minimalist--it's just monochromatic. Sure, some of those sites are minimalist, but a lot of them are actually rather cluttered. I would take those designs any day of the week over, say, the Yahoo! homepage, but that's not saying much.
- Vedlen, on 05/24/2009, -1/+8Most of these sites don't even have a minimalist design.. Burried.
- algaeturd, on 05/25/2009, -0/+5And 95% of them suck BALLS.
Just goes to show that when people vote (digg) on things, you get the opinion of the masses obviously. And the opinions are the masses gave us things like the Bush administration, American idols winners and masses of other useless *****.
These are no different. If the majority of people think these websites are 'amazing' and 'impressive,' you can bet your ass that they're mediocre at best. - vinceislegend, on 05/24/2009, -1/+6about:blank
- splendid, on 05/24/2009, -1/+6"Error establishing a database connection" - Very minimalist...
- SCscoutguy, on 05/24/2009, -0/+4Craigslist ftw!
- sionnach, on 05/24/2009, -1/+5"Beautiful examples", not "examples"
- jakereilly, on 05/24/2009, -3/+7Slow website is slow.
- neosinn, on 05/25/2009, -1/+4bury because they all have no personality what so ever. They all look like cheap templates which someone threw up some text after a night of template drinking and bam website out of a box.
Whatever happened to websites with real design from a guy who built a site from nothing? - killerpotato, on 05/24/2009, -2/+5http://www.google.com/
- greenmartian, on 05/24/2009, -2/+5oh you know clients. always thinking more "design" is more work thus more worth their money. there were so many pieces of mine that were amazing before the clients put in their input. now i'm too embarrassed to include them in my portfolio.
- GalacticRerun, on 05/24/2009, -2/+5I came here to say how much I love minimal design but I also love the flashy and illustration side of web design. If they were all like this the web would be a little bland.
It is possible to have busy visuals without it being badly designed. Sometimes the target audience or the subject it represents requires it. - chessthecat, on 05/25/2009, -0/+3I didn't see a single example of minimalism either. I thought minimalism was about taking out the superfluous elements. Take page 3 as an example. I'd take out the "blog" type in the background since it adds nothing for the user. The date on the left side can come out too and moved to the top of each post in plain black type. All the "Category" links can come out since there's a search box just above it. If everything's tagged properly I'll be able to find what I need without the Category links especially since some of the category link titles are meaningless: "V5", "Squarespace", "Blogging", "Staff Picks", "Members." Then the staff photos can go. Take out all the Twitter nonsense too since you already have a comment section. Or keep the Twitter and dump the comments. Either or. There's a link at the bottom of the page to the page you're on. That can definitely come out. The word "Navigate" can come out at the bottom of the page too. It's not clickable. Why it's there I don't know. Finally the number of entries after each month (eg February 2008 (1)) can come out. Who cares how many posts were made in a particular month? You can also drop the year to a two digit format.
Do all that and you'll be CLOSE to having a minimalist design. I could probably tighten that page up by at least 50%. But that's what I do. - myk7, on 05/24/2009, -1/+4Genius is the ability to reduce the complicated to the simple.
- santixx, on 05/24/2009, -5/+7Wow, it's so minimalistic that you can't see it.
- JDLamb88, on 05/25/2009, -0/+2K&K MIME! They'll mime the ***** out of you!
- inkswamp, on 05/24/2009, -2/+4Just confirms what I've always suspected--most people have no idea what minimalism really is. Few of these are examples of actual minimalism and none of those are particularly striking examples of it. Minimalism is NOT the same as having lots of white space or having prominent images or other elements. In fact, you can have very cluttered and complex designs that adhere to the design aesthetics of minimalism. A clean design is nice but it's not automatically minimalism in the traditional sense of that term.
- stockjones, on 05/25/2009, -0/+2Very clean designs. I only have one grudge regarding many of these articles. Many of these type of site design articles are great for a specific simple purpose like a blog or portfolio site which in 99% of the cases is the type of site they are showcasing. It would be nice to see some site layout/design AND structure articles regarding more complex sites like an ecommerce site dealing with thousands of sku's with different categories, a financial site dealing with a lot of data etc. Too many times I see articles enforcing rules of development and design that apply to very simple sites with a very simple structure.
- sjh0313, on 05/25/2009, -0/+2No. I just hate when people use "sexy" to describe tech stuff. It doesn't get much deeper than that.
- skipgamer, on 05/25/2009, -0/+2Agreed, I don't even consider them minimalist.
This http://www.janreichle.com/ is a perfect example of a truly minimal design. (no affiliation whatsoever) - xaeon, on 05/24/2009, -0/+2^
- MaxMWood, on 05/24/2009, -4/+6I'm sick of these goddamn roll over ads on Digg! I hope they pay Digg MUCH more to show these crappy annoying adverts rather than normal banner ads.
- vegr, on 05/25/2009, -3/+5I think you've got adware on your system...
- xaeon, on 05/25/2009, -1/+3Although initially quirky, this site became an absolute nightmare in literally seconds. An example of how NOT to make a website if you want anyone to stay longer than five seconds.
- Chakz, on 05/25/2009, -0/+2Is it too late to say sexy?
- WYendrys, on 05/25/2009, -0/+2I don't see a huge correlation between these designs and Minimalism. Quite frankly, the majority of these designs seem to be grid based, and thus probably more influenced by Swiss Design.
Anyway, next time, maybe they should just write '40 Beautiful Examples of Simplicity in Web Design' (even though is still not entirely the case, it won't make them look as ignorant). - gamben0, on 05/25/2009, -1/+3No one is forcing you to visit digg. If you don't like it, don't come here.
- COINTELPROAgent, on 05/25/2009, -1/+3Those sites weren't even minimalist. The herd instincts of front-page diggers never ceases to amaze me.
- afwjam, on 05/25/2009, -0/+1How about usable minimalism?
- Maratonda, on 05/25/2009, -0/+1What do you think of this?
http://jimbarraud.com/2009/03/19/manifest/ - Sprules04, on 05/25/2009, -0/+1My favorite "minimalist" website is http://muxtape.com Although it's only in the works right now, when it's finished I think it will truly be an awesome website.
- UKsHaDoW, on 05/25/2009, -0/+1No i like to read on all subjects on all subjects?
Grid Systems by Josef Muller-Brockman is pretty much the best book on layout for books and websites. - bobbi21, on 05/25/2009, -0/+1I hate the flashy stuff. just do things simple and its fine. We dont have to make ppl more adhd then they already are :P
- gerryk, on 05/25/2009, -0/+1Hi Steve Jobs... welcome to digg
Seriously though... Apple's site is hardly a shining light of design - Tehzz, on 05/25/2009, -0/+1Oh my God an ad just started talking to me Jesus Christ make it stop
why Digg, why? - IamNomad, on 05/25/2009, -0/+1This man is a wise man and deserves your diggs.
- quomen, on 05/25/2009, -0/+1Are you new here? Back in the day it was sites like lifehacker who had a ton of their lists posted. Then cracked became big. Lists have ALWAYS been prevalent on digg. I enjoy them.
- inactive, on 05/25/2009, -0/+1The anti-minimalist design:

- bryanfuller, on 07/09/2009, -0/+1these are really excellent tips for not only the younger but for also the professional designers. I thing such tricks would work well for sticker printing and sticker designs as I often see these at
