I'm going to release 61 Photoshop tutorials and be king! - thaprinze, on 01/06/2009, -1/+28Sometimes I think the world would be a much better place if less people knew how to use Photoshop.
- jaygeeze, on 01/06/2009, -1/+24Photoshop is weird - it's both easy and intuitive *and* complex at the same time. For basic stuff, you'll quickly get used to the interface. But for professional-level editing, it's much harder to be able to use the right tools for the job. The scripting tutorial was especially helpful, I got turned off initially when I saw the 70+ page PDF from Adobe, it turns out it's not that hard.
- KSUdesigner, on 01/06/2009, -0/+20Shortcuts aren't going to help much if you don't know what any of the tools do. Learn the tools then learn the shortcuts. Shortcuts only speed up the process, they don't help you understand anything.
- imcostalong, on 01/06/2009, -2/+20As a professional and 8 years experienced. I can tell you there is no better method to learning photoshop then raw experimentation.. Layer blending modes are a great way to see how to get awesome effects, try overlay, color burn and dodge alot, and scroll through the others to see what you get. Failure Failure Failure, it will get you comfortable and not afraid to try new things. Avoid filters as much as possible, they severely handicapped me for 2 years in my journey. Best advice I can give you, if you care to listen, is buy a tablet (1028p atleast 4x6), draw as much as you can, start hard, download brush packs and make your own, and most importantly DO NOT BE AFRAID.. you can do it... the more you force yourself to adapt the program around your needs, the quicker you'll learn. If at 12 years old I could get it, I guarantee anyone else can too. I'm 20 now, and already in my third job of my career without a degree makin good money. I never had formal training, and you dont need it either. It helps but its not required. A DEGREE IS though, I'm working for mine, just make sure you dont wait for school to get started. You dont wana go in without any knowledge or experience you wont get good job placement.
Being able to draw will heavily distinguish you from the normal Graphics Designer, not only will your designs be crisper and more unique, but you're not bounded by purchasing a stocks or a damn good camera to capture your own. Don't get me wrong though, stocks are an integral part of GD, you just don't want them to be the foundation of every design. BTW, drawing is an achieved talent, your not born with it, it takes a lot of practice but hell its worth every minute.
istockphoto.com (stocks only), pixel2life.com, good-tutorials.com, deviantart.com are great places to get training and resources for any new graphics designer, as you get better look for digital painting tutorials. Go to places like depthcore.com and try to pick out how they developed their pieces, technique studies in your spare time will improve your skill DRAMATICALLY.
Join graphics design communities, and get your art critiqued (word of warning, dont beg for lessons, we hate walking people through stuff). If I had any websites off hand I would post them here. Remember, Dont be AFRAID, fear of failure will handicap you more than anything else. Know you can do it.. know it and you will eventually be a great designer.
Sorry for the rant, but im assuming if you cared about this article then your looking for all the advice you can get. I wish all the new designers luck in their venture, and I hope to see some new inspiring work up on the net! Have fun! - sandyw123, on 01/06/2009, -1/+14Good compilation, thanks.
- Mockylock, on 01/06/2009, -9/+20#1 should be, "Learn most of the shortcuts".
Once you learn those, the rest comes along very quick. - AlmightyWang, on 01/06/2009, -2/+12buried because there are about 800 million photoshop tutorials on Digg and I am sick of seeing them
- hadak, on 01/06/2009, -0/+9Go to school.
- WiretapStudios, on 01/06/2009, -1/+9I agree as well. I am a graphic designer and illustrator, and so many people tell other people they can use Photoshop because they have a rudimentary knowledge of ugly filters they used for myspace photos. Then clients are either soured on bad experiences with designers (making them want to pay less) or think that they can get a good designer anywhere (making them want to pay less). Tutorials can be great, but about 75% of them are useless and crappy instructions on stuff you would never use in the real world.
- JamesBondJr, on 01/06/2009, -0/+8how many did it take you? 34?
- inajeep, on 01/06/2009, -1/+8The smart move would be a 95 Photoshop Tutorials and Resources article.
- inactive, on 01/06/2009, -0/+7That didn't seem like a rant to me.It actually gave me courage to pursue some of my goals.
- cadmiumpaint, on 01/06/2009, -0/+6this is very Photoshop 101 but still valuable. This is actually very valuable for pros too, who've fallen a bit behind on keeping up with the newest features in CS3+
- fxu1989, on 01/06/2009, -0/+63. You Suck at Photoshop (series)
Way to go, next time read the article first. - saadkamal, on 01/06/2009, -0/+6Awesome collection of Photoshop tutorials.. Thanks for sharing..
- pyra5, on 01/06/2009, -0/+6Find someone that goes to college and get them to buy you a legit copy through a school discount. I got mine from my sister for $120
- WiretapStudios, on 01/06/2009, -0/+5Work for a design studio or go to school. You can use theirs for free and also get discounts.
- danj321, on 01/06/2009, -1/+6How do you get Photoshop legitimately for less than $600?
- Table16, on 01/06/2009, -1/+6Download a corporate version of it as a torrent. Complete legit ;)
- Mockylock, on 01/06/2009, -0/+4Well, maybe it should be #2, after your suggestion.
Nonetheless, patience is the hardest issue to cope with when using a new application. If you actually look at a sheet with shortcuts that say "cut", "Paste", "object", "stamp", "Layer", "save", "deselect", etc... it will save you a lot of frustration from having to look through 30 different menus... not just a toolbar. Tools only account for about 10% of the available shortcuts.
But, you probably know more than I do, considering you're still in college and have more experience with it... not to mention more knowledge due to owning a Mac. - JonnyCasino, on 01/06/2009, -0/+4It's also a wonderful refresher to just browse through these if you don't use photoshop on a daily basis. As I went down the list, a few lightbulbs came on. As a practice, however, you'll find yourself exploring with other features with these "basic" tutorials that could take you further.
- Mutestar, on 08/20/2009, -0/+4Thanks a lot! I just received CS4 as a gift and this will help me immensely.
- TheKingInYellow, on 01/06/2009, -2/+6there's no such thing as "the right tool for the job". everyone is different and will work using their own methods and tool choices. there is no right or wrong way to do anything in photoshop; it's about talent and the end product.
- jggube, on 01/06/2009, -0/+4Why so hostile, 35 not your favorite number? :)
- fxu1989, on 01/06/2009, -0/+4>>Tutorials can be great, but about 75% of them are useless and crappy instructions on stuff you would never use in the real world.
QFE - kierucom, on 01/06/2009, -1/+4Now if they can provide something similar for Illustrator...
- KSUdesigner, on 01/06/2009, -0/+3#2 is fine, but you definitely need to learn what the tools (everything in photoshop is a tool, not just what you see in the toolbar) do before you learn the shortcuts. Really you should be picking up the shortcut for each tool as you learn what it does, they sort of go hand in hand. Knowing the shortcuts will definitely increase your productivity, no doubt about it, but they don't do jack to help you learn how to use the tools.
I assume your last little bit there is sarcasm, but no I am not still in college, I just never changed my user name once I was no longer in school. In fact I graduated 4.5 years ago and currently hold the position of Art Director for an advertising agency, so yes I'd say I have quite a bit more experience with it than most people do. Yeah I'm a Mac user too, but I don't see what that has to do with having more knowledge about Photoshop, considering it functions the same on a PC as well. Not all Mac users are fanboys, I'm certainly not. - Kennui, on 01/06/2009, -1/+4And im going to release top 10 most wanted photoshop tutorial lists.
- WiretapStudios, on 01/06/2009, -0/+3Illustrator tutorials are all over the internet.
- WiretapStudios, on 01/06/2009, -0/+3Yeah, different people have different reasons for using it and can use it at different capacity. I use it daily and have a second income based almost solely on it's use, and I still learn new things every day.
- hokie47, on 01/06/2009, -0/+3Exactly, so many people say they know how to use Photoshop but they really don't. In a way it is like chess easy to learn hard to master.
- skyshock1, on 01/06/2009, -1/+4Awesome! Another list of photoshop tutorials for me to bookmark and forget about. :)
- imcostalong, on 01/06/2009, -1/+4If your the only one I inspire from that, I feel as though it was well worth the effort :D
- WiretapStudios, on 01/06/2009, -0/+3I'm a daily Photoshop user and I agree. It's not something that needs to be brought up over and over because it's already saturated on the internet.
- theutopian, on 01/06/2009, -0/+3Thank you for this. I've been looking for tutorials to teach be the basics. I have no idea how to use photoshop and really need/want to learn.
- hmjones, on 01/06/2009, -1/+3Great collection! Most of the tutorials you see these days are for advanced users, but this is perfect for those just starting to learn Photoshop.
- inactive, on 01/07/2009, -0/+2I know this is kind of stupid to ask, but does anyone have the same thing for Adobe Premier? I need a starters guide for it instead >__>
Thanks - lazybuoy, on 01/07/2009, -0/+2Great for photoshop noobs like me. Thanks.
- Soval, on 01/06/2009, -0/+2Are the pills running low?
- alione143, on 01/09/2009, -0/+2more information about this topic http://forex-ms.blogspot.com/2009/01/taking-profit ...
- simonsez21, on 01/06/2009, -0/+2Well said.
- insidiousraven, on 01/06/2009, -0/+2I took an Illustrator class once, the only thing we did the whole semester was draw with the pen tool. Apparently thats the only thing the program can do
- jptolife, on 01/06/2009, -2/+4Being a complete Photoshop N00B, this helps a lot. Thanks!
- timothiuz, on 01/06/2009, -0/+2you too
- phenom2k7, on 01/07/2009, -0/+2Browse through popular list, see a Photoshop article, click, browse, wow, what an awesome list, I'll read this later, bookmark it in delicious, digg it, forget about it, repeat.
- ZaxCG2, on 01/09/2009, -0/+2Is it okay to say that this comment was more helpful than 35 basic tutorials?
I agree with every bit you just said. Take it from a fellow graphic designer-
I started with Photoshop Elements 2.0 when I was about 14 when my parents got me a Wacom Tablet- and it was probably the most amazing gift I've ever got in my life (besides N64). I started my career out as a Deviantart.com nut (see: kirbysonickrazy.deviantart.com) Embarassing? Yes. Worth it? HECK YES. Drawing and fiddling around in Photoshop is the BEST thing you can do to teach yourself. Tutorials ARE ok though- they do teach you a few good tricks, but in the end is it really all that original? Start with tutorials if you're afraid of venturing out into the confines of your imagination and then work your way over to your own way.
I never would have imagine that my fanboy days would turn into a full time job. Now getting paid to create graphics for signs using CS4. Photoshop is AWESOME. LEARN IT. - Refridgeron, on 01/06/2009, -0/+2I got it as a gift too.... from Demonoid... ;)
- thh204, on 01/06/2009, -1/+3orly?
