- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+47Not very impressive design, nothing that a regular web user wouldn't of seen before.
Some of the colour schemes were nice, kinda ended there for me though.
Could be useful if you're researching different designs of websites. - miles01110, on 10/12/2007, -8/+36Wow, neat looking CSS menus, Web 2.0 graphics.
zzzzzzz.... - str3ama, on 10/12/2007, -3/+27nothing on there that can compare to the beauty of css zen garden
- noxcel, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19http://carfreaks.net/ looks good actually. You should click on other pages before posting comments like "without the photo it could be anyones tripod page".
Check out http://carfreaks.net/content/ for example, I do not like some of the colors he used for text, but most of the design looks good. The design is much better than http://www.critbuns.com/ - essjay, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15I agree, there seem to be three types of design there. You've got the "fill most of the page with an image" and you've got the "make it look like a desk or pinboard" and then you've got the "designed by a big company for a big company but we don't really want you to know so we've made it all 'hip' but really its just fugly" styles. And yeah, I wouldn't definitely call some of those site just plain fugly, especially the Brit Awards one.
- tehloki, on 10/12/2007, -5/+19"quotes innocent grammar mistake in a haughty manner"
prick. - adragons, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15I understand that this is an opportunity from which designers can draw inspiration, but really, they should be using their noggins to think up something unique - even if it turns out similar to something else. It should spawn from a idea that the designer did not steal/borrow/draw inspiration.
- jodokast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8@sarevok9
First of all, this list is of standards compliant sites. Second, 2advanced was good 5 years ago, but now they're as important as the guy on the couch. - butterflygirl, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Not that impressive, really.

- jodokast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6omg thank you butterflygirl, i love you, your so awesome, lets go have sex
- insovietrussia, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7What's your point? Self promotion is fine if you have the goods to back it up.
- DeskFlyer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6When I design websites, I adhere to a very important rule that I learned a long time ago: KISS- Keep It Simple, Stupid.
- keepclear, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Thats because they are the same company.
- itsbecca, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I think by design they meant pretty to look at, which is a pretty incomplete definition of design. A couple of those are actually fairly poorly designed as far as navigation and content layout goes.
- resplence, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7I think I'm starting to understand why the digg dupe police gets so badly upset. This kind of article is getting really really old...
- tbeseda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Quit digging this *****.
It's nearly every other design in the last 60 featured on every single CSS gallery.
Just pick one of those to subscribe to and get at least one new design every day.
Now really, quit digging by impulse. Just because you consider yourself an aspiring designer, doesn't mean you should +1 digg for every story that has any mention of design or css. - deansfurniture5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4http://duggmirror.com//design/30_Stunning_Websites_Every_Designer_Should_See/
- nakani, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Creative people have been building upon, borrowing and drawing inspiration from other creative works since time immemorial. There's nothing wrong with that, as long you end up with something unique and valuable in some novel way (not just a crappy ripoff). Think of electronic music/DJing: a lot of the techniques are borrowed from various other genres, sampled, remixed, etc. But through that process they can create something compelling that ends up differentiating itself from what it built upon.
- NanoStuff, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4All those "simulated-transparency" gifs are frightening, what a pain it is to fit it all together. One pixel off course and you're *****. PNG is the saviour of the web designer.
- shableep, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3good stuff, but not really too stunning. i mean, it's definitely good work... but not "must see" stuff.
it was nice to see some decent stuff out there, though sometimes some of the sites were very similar to one another.
standards compliance is pretty cool, tho. - Wisgary, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4No one's getting any from butterflygirl over teh internetz, so pipe down with the thank yous. Besides, we all know it's some sort of man because no girls exist on the internets outside of myspace.
- x788, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2that car freaks website ripped their logo off of ColdFusion...
- aywwts4, on 10/12/2007, -8/+10http://carfreaks.net/
How is this great web design? Its a nice photo, with a black gradient, a few transparent PNGs over it, and some text. Without the photo it could be anyone's tripod page.
The only one I really liked was this one http://www.critbuns.com/
It attempts that kind of high concept angle a lot of pre-2000 era sites tried and failed miserably at (Remember people who tried wood-grain sites, or corkboards?) And actualy manages to pull it off. (But his comments section seems to rip him apart mercilessly) - cday, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@resplence,
"I think I'm starting to understand why the digg dupe police gets so badly upset. This kind of article is getting really really old..."
............................................................
I'll never understand the "dupe police" and their obsession with looking for and persistantly interrupting the comments by pointing out dupes to everyone else, as if it's somehow important.
The cure for subjects that might not interest you, or that you're tired of seeing, is to simply use the "Dupe" tag and move on. If enough people do that, duped articles won't make the front page...problem solved. Truthfully, we must assume that if you not only stop to read an article, but also take time to comment, then it must hold SOME interest for you, right? - DonCarcharo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@adragons
Where do you think designers came up with their ideas and inspirations, sitting in a cubicle staring at a blank screen? As already stated, research is a key part of the design process. A good designer isn't looking to steal anything from a successful design other than a little inspiration and perhaps some insight as to how a particular problem was solved. - deansfurniture5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yes.
His attention to detail is superb--take for instance his typography--for ampersands (&) he makes sure to use a different font so that he gets the best one possible. It's also (in his own words) "bulletproof"--all of the sizes are em-based, meaning if a user has to increase the text size, they can do it without losing the design. - tybris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Oh great, massive headers are back.
- keepclear, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Why odd ? Its a great website which fits both posts.
- resplence, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I see your point and I agree with it. It has nothing to do with my point, though.
What I meant is that I think I understand what the dupe police must feel when they see that the exact same kind of content made the frontpage again.
To me, this kind of article is annoying on so many levels. It's mostly blogspam. There's always a few that have been already been mentioned on one article about the exact same subject that made the frontpage just a few days ago. Anyone who really cares about this has already seen those sites, or could if they just followed any of the thousands of css galleries out there. That's the place for that, in fact. The comments on digg are always the same. Anyway, It's annoying, and since the dupe police is so passionate about what they do, I figure they must feel the same about dupe articles as I do about this topic.
"Truthfully, we must assume that if you not only stop to read an article, but also take time to comment, then it must hold SOME interest for you, right?"
Yes, anything that I dislike is of my interest. If I am indifferent to something, I don't even acknowledge it. I'm not indifferent to this kind of article, however, since it annoys me. Therefore I must voice my disapproval of it.
It seems you miss being angry at the dupe police (they have been more than a bit quiet lately) and decided to lash out at the first occurrence of the 'dupe' word, thus missing my point.. - codwif, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Its hard to take this list seriously when he has a site listed in 30 Great Website Designs and in his 30 dirty designs list!
http://coda.co.za/ is under both lists. Odd if you ask me. - icexe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1none of these things have anything to do with dictating design trends.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i agree. submitting this as a news item is just more lame pr for lists of websites that aren't worth going to nor looking at.
- ArnoldLayne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They all look like typical blah corporate websites to me. Does anyone have a website that actually looks interesting?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1nice one ;)
- Rageous, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The problem with experimental and unique designs that distance themselves is usually that they hold little practical value for content.
Nice to see SimpleBits and Virb on here... the latter especially is brilliantly coded. And ExpressionEngine isn't really a standards-compliant website... it's a standards-compliant CMS, and a very good one at that. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What is the trillian one supposed to do - doesn't seem to work in safari.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2the headline should read: 30 sites I need you to click to so I can get them some traffic.
- DonCarcharo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The PNG file format is wonderful. I use transparent PNGs on all my web sites. Well except the ones that have to be compatible with IE.
/It's a shame PNG is a really nice format. - theadvinci, on 07/01/2008, -0/+1Some great web designs there, but nothing very impressive.
- blanktarget, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Totally agree with you. That's why it's a "trend" though. I gotta say though that I've been a fan of the dark grey / lime green for a while and I think that simple bits is my favorite because it nails those colors and if you look a lot of these other sites not only mimic it's colors but also it's design.
- icexe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Any of these would have been cutting-edge a couple of years ago. But today, they all scream 'me too, me too!" .. It like everyone forgot there are other colors out there besides dark gray, light blue, lime green and orange, and that there are other tools available in Photoshop besides the gradient and pattern tools.
- Xisting, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It requires one extra line in your CSS to keep IE compatibility. Since you'll have to hack your style to make it look correct on IE in the first place I don't see how it would entirely prevent you from using transparent PNGs.
- parax, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Wow that trillianastra.com site is incredible. I can't count the number of times I've prayed that a site would make me scroll down before I can even do anything.
- chrisdobson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thankgod. Someone with actual taste.
- yamyogurt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I liked Car Freaks but other than that not that great.
- dbrok23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's really difficult to say these 30 such and such sites are the best when there are hundreds of great new ones popping up all the time. I'm not even sure if all 30 could really be considered '2.0'. Here are three directories that list examples of real 2.0 sites:
http://www.go2web20.net/
http://www.netjaxer.com
http://www.seomoz.org/web2.0/ - onedarkangeluk, on 12/19/2007, -0/+0You're kidding me right? It must be a joke, got to be because this is not a "MUST SEE." I bet it's some joke cause for a designer point of view, what I see here, these designs, ain't that special at all. I didn't get inspired but deflated by how people can kill design and not go back to basic and be creative and break the mold of mediocrity crap.
- topgun553, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Does this remind anyone else of the wired article?
- VizualConcept, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nothing super impressive
