http://www.backbeatmedia.com/ - jummy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23From the article:
"Important: if you like this article, please let us know digging it. Otherwise we’ll break this series of articles and will offer you another content." - buibui, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16I find reading light text on dark easier to read. It's less of a "staring at a bright light" sort of thing like right now on digg :(
- Ignitedude, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Well it's a fairly exhaustive list of some of the sexiest dark themed sites on the Internet.
I'm guessing they just wish to be rewarded for their hard work by users digging the article, and therefore providing them with more coverage. - affanjam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13I really like dark, it gives a really nice high contrast elegant feel.
- tony134340, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13I think they're mostly great. I get tired of seeing all the pastels and light colors with 2.0-ish sites. My whole OS interface and browser is all black themed. Anything bright is too distracting for me.
- Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Black is back, baby.
- riplikethat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Definitely worth digging. I am getting bored seeing same white-blue-orange combos everywhere these days. The way I see it, white feels more like 'Open Sourcish' color for 'most' sites out there. Black can give your site more professional look.
- Brewno, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Smashing always has the highest quality content, it's always on the pulse when it comes to design. I especially liked http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2006/12/19/50-beautiful-css-based-web-designs-in-2006/
- iisbum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6If you like these, don't forget http://www.lightondark.com a showcase for light on dark sites.
- avoss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Some of the sites are not as high-quality as the images within the article would lead you to believe. For example, the site with the image of the headphones suffers from poor digital imaging(artifacts around headphones).
Overall, it's still an interesting installment. - gottoseeit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I hope they'll be rewarded. I really want to see more articles like this one.
- Elektriq, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9http://www.duggmirror.com
- Scatropolis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'd like to see more statistics about the sites.....size (KB) would be interesting.
- jummy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5However, since its harder to read light text on dark background, the usability question occurs. Roger Johansson about it:
http://www.456bereastreet.com/archive/200608/light_text_on_dark_background_vs_readability/ - reddevil3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3These dark websites just look classy.
- kawa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The site seems to experience a large flow of visitors (as they wish XD) and the server is scrambling to serve up the pages.
- mydiggname, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I like the dark pages, but I hate it when you click on a link and go back to a "normal" webpage after staring at a dark page for 10 minutes and then get monitor blindness. yech.
- russellnation, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2WOW really good inspiration for my design classes
- somerandomnerd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2No, that's a good example of spam.
- hamstu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I'm actually working on dark theme for my upcoming website. It's great to see such beautiful examples.
- CircleFusion, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The light-on-dark / dark-on-light readability issue is very arguable. I personally prefer darker backgrounds (if they are done correctly). Though, I think it is a bit of a challenge to create a light-on-dark design that works. I suppose that is why this article is of interest.
- MedHead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2These look pretty, but they're a hassle to read and navigate. Several contain small, low contrast print. Some add too much information to the front page, making the overwhelming amount of content difficult to read and differentiate. When one has to move the latest post into a secondary page to fit the rest of the extra "about me" content on the front page, then there is a overabundance of information presented at one time! Some either obfuscate or orient the header text to a point where it becomes uncertain if it really is header text any longer. Most are constrained to a set size: Digg users probably would agree that, with the new version of Digg, things have gotten easier to navigate with a browser-window-based size design.
Overall, these sites are very slick, but information delivery (which I would argue is the most important aspect of a site) seems to have been considered of a lesser degree of importance to the designers than eye candy. These sites are the type that I'd look at once, ogle the design, and then never visit again. Perhaps I've gotten used to Google's simplicity, but I prefer a little more white - er, black - space on a site. And I don't mean the amount of wasted area around the squished content area, centered in my browser window. - mrRB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Much like San Diego.
- mrRB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That would be funny if Maddox himself hadn't stated that the site sucks, and he knows it. He claims to use a simple, ugly style because it saves a lot on bandwidth, which is a very good reason.
- justinshattuck, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Uhm, I appreciate being on the list. I think the design Elena from designdisease.com initially worked up is outstanding! Props for being on the list :)
- IceFury, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I' m on the list and i like it very much... Thanks for the Author ;) I'm very pleased.
It's normal to design in every color, everything is restricted only by the imagine and feeling of its (site) designer...
How the pictures and images look on a dark background you could see on my and my friends internet design showcase http://www.E-motionalDesign.com
It’s far better to present the images on dark than on the brightest one…
Best Wishes
Milosz Lodowski "IceFury" - elie222, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2nice article. i prefer white more though as opposed to black. sites like digg, del.icio.us, apple, flickr, etc. - the ipod look.
but http://www.justinshattuck.com/ looked really good on that page of black sites. - Padwah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Was just about to post that, excellent site :)
- BassCadet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"However, since its harder to read light text on dark background, the usability question occurs."
Hogwash.
Is it better to bombard your eyes with lots of blank white light (white background, black text) or the opposite? - ginty, on 01/22/2008, -0/+1Dark works just fine. Its kind of refreshing. Just find someone that can do it right.
Check out http://www.7sparks.com. They rock. - theadvinci, on 07/01/2008, -0/+1Dark web designs are beautiful but often unusable because it's harder to read from a dark background.
- 2Speed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why isn't the Apple site redesign pic posted on digg a while back not included?
- Aamir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I find reading light text on dark easier to read. It's less of a "staring at a bright light" sort of thing like right now on digg :(
AGREED - mrRB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Possibly because it's not real.
- doubleyoube, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2yay!
I work for http://www.magnitude.co.uk
Maybe this will convince the boss man to keep the design and branding.. I love it, but he wants it changed. - tcwood00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ooooo and of course dont forget about
http://www.albinoblacksheep.com/ - mrRB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ah. So the quality of a given design trend is determined by which brand uses it.
Light text on dark BGs can be handled properly, as seen here. - MedHead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Where?
- dmitriyvoz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0The author has mentioned very much a vital topic today. It seems to me that the problematics of this clause enables to reflect and draw conclusions. You can as to look sites in Russian which mention this theme: http://www.rolid.org http://www.se-ua.com
