- dicerandom, on 10/20/2007, -2/+35For someone who claims to know about "hardcore graphic/web designer[s]" this guy has a pretty horrific site design.
- nobodyfamous28, on 10/26/2007, -3/+30You’ve learned your lesson and stopped using the word “final” in any file name when saving.
so true!! lol - Auto, on 10/26/2007, -0/+26FTA: "You’ve totally slaughtered a great design concept because the client thinks he/she knows best. (everyone thinks they are a designer)"
Personally, this is one thing I will not tolerate. I have dropped entire projects that were near completion because the client's girlfriend's brother thinks he knows better "because he has taken a photoshop class". I may be stubborn, and it may cost me money, but I will not allow a client to jerk me around like that. They hired me to design... if they wanted to design something themselves, they should go purchase a copy of Frontpage and have at it. - graviplana, on 10/19/2007, -0/+25Sigh, this list is completely true. I can relate. Dugg up. Favorite. Thanks. But the poster should've made a Comic Sans reference, IMO. :)
- mikehill33, on 10/26/2007, -1/+23you name all_your_files_with_underscores.
- centran, on 10/19/2007, -4/+24I hate number 18 the most
"You’ve had to explain to a client that a layered file wasn’t part of the deal"
Trying to get a graphic designer to give you their "raw" file is like pulling teeth.
"Can you send me the photoshop file?"..."Uh, I did it in Illustrator"..."Thats OK, send me that"..."I can send you a pdf. That way it looks correct on all formats"..."No, I really want the original file so I can pull some graphics easily from it for other projects"..."Yeah well, I did it in Quark so I doubt you have that. I can send you a tiff!"..."You just said you did it in Illustrator. 'F' you!" - Keyser_Soze, on 10/19/2007, -0/+19"You’ve intentionally overbid a project because you can sniff out a bad client from a mile away."
THIS IS THE ONE
Man, I did this on the last job and still got it. Oh, and I should have went higher, client was a nightmare. - pabloD, on 10/21/2007, -0/+17I still do, because anything after a final is billed separately.
- DesignerScott, on 10/19/2007, -0/+17Truth is designers do it for repeat business, and so that amateur hacks don't 'F' up there work!
I always specify what exactly I'm turning over in my contracts for that reason.
So don't make us out to be liars and cheats, we're mostly just protecting our underpaid asses! - graviplana, on 10/26/2007, -0/+13"400x330concept_11b_final_newfont3_LATEST-6_!!!USETHISONE!!!_2.psd"
AfterawhileIjuststoppedevenusingunderscoresunlessitgoesoutviaemail:) I've actually named a file "...USETHISONE.*" haha. - xpose, on 10/17/2007, -0/+12It would have been nice if the font to read this article wasn't so small, or at least increase the padding between bullets. Sheeeesh :)
- gasin, on 10/19/2007, -0/+11Buried for the list is way old. For someone who claims to be a designer, this dude surly does a good job copy and pasting other people's stuff.
So much for originality! - jdmcadam, on 10/17/2007, -0/+10Like how as soon as anyone uses Comic Sans, your opinion of them and their product/service drops though the floor?
- MiDri, on 10/19/2007, -0/+10Exactly! You get the finished product, if you want a slightly different version of it you come back to me -- you dont' take my work and pay some schmuck to destroy it.
- inactive, on 10/18/2007, -0/+1026. You've pushed Photoshops ram capacity to 80% hoping 200mb files save faster.....but, nothing happens.
- RadicalEdward, on 10/19/2007, -1/+11I consider bathroom breaks and sleeping interruptions too.
- WaterMedia, on 10/19/2007, -0/+10Jesus - there is a whole world of people like me out there. HELLO FRIENDS.
- ronin691, on 10/26/2007, -0/+9400x330concept_11b_final_newfont3_LATEST-6_!!!USETHISONE!!!_2_NO_SRSLY_THIS_IS THE_LAST_ONE.psd
- smaisch, on 10/18/2007, -0/+9Oh how I remember those days. I have resorted to using the Greek alphabet as well.
- smaisch, on 10/18/2007, -1/+8You missed the irony in your statement. Most designs are recycled, just like the article. :P
- jacksyi, on 10/17/2007, -0/+7Sometimes an old story or list should be resubmitted, for those who didn't catch it that last time.
- inactive, on 10/18/2007, -1/+8"Hey, look at me! I use Photoshop. I'm a designer!!"
You find that a lot on the web. - rephil513, on 10/17/2007, -1/+8An asterisk goes by 16.) "You’ve totally slaughtered a great design concept because the client thinks he/she knows best. (everyone thinks they are a designer)"---should include---"the client opted for a clipart variation from their Word image folder...."
- Jarasmen, on 10/18/2007, -1/+7"You clean your keyboard more often than you wash your car."
NEVAR! >:O - cakeeating, on 10/26/2007, -0/+5link got screwed up - here it is: http://tinyurl.com/24krz5
- kogeki, on 10/17/2007, -0/+5And phone calls. These interruptions also apply when I am playing a video games. It really sucks when the outside world interrupts you.
- SvenGeiss, on 10/16/2007, -1/+6haha. true..
- S1lkySm00th, on 10/16/2007, -1/+6You can use keyboard shortcuts at light speed, blindfolded, but you can’t type a paragraph of text without staring at the keyboard.
Classic. - chubbybunny, on 10/16/2007, -0/+5Did that rollover noise scare the ***** out of anyone else? I moused over it the first time really quickly (not noticing I had) and it made me jump-- I thought my monitor was going to explode.
Arrrggggg sound on websites :( - lookbehindu, on 10/17/2007, -0/+5You’ve had “Software Nightmares,” when you’ve been working way too much.
getting attacked by brushes, command lines, text, numbers, and others in my nightmares are always a sign to me that i should add a "pain and suffering" tax into projects. - cakeeating, on 10/17/2007, -0/+5The original, made popular 184 days ago (barely 6 months - are you kidding me?!), with 4 times as many Diggs and from a much, much nicer website that publishes great original content and free vectors and stuff - not some ad-riddle piece of crap copy/pasting robo-blog: http://digg.com/design/25_Reasons_You_Might_Be_A_H ...
- LoveWidescreen, on 10/17/2007, -0/+4No one ever said that "hardcore" and "talented" were synonymous. ;)
- KSUdesigner, on 10/17/2007, -0/+4That's why you should always write up a contract specifying what type of file the client will receive in the end. I also like to include, "Working/layered documents can be made available for a nominal fee, to be determined by the designer at the time of request." This fee is usually pretty substantial too.
- KSUdesigner, on 10/16/2007, -1/+5Unfortunately most of us depend on the paychecks we receive from our clients and can't really afford to tell our clients where they can shove their ideas. I personally believe that the difference between a good designer and a great designer lies within this sitaution. A good designer will tell the client to piss off, but a great designer will incorporate their client's ideas in an aesthetically pleasing way that doesn't entirely compromise their original design.
- billymonster, on 10/17/2007, -0/+4or papyrus, most overused font ever.
- John370, on 10/17/2007, -0/+4Hopefully, you've never thought of being a writer either...
- decompyler, on 10/17/2007, -0/+4I personally don't get this one. Is there some sort correlation of the inability to touch type if you have design skills?
- webRat, on 10/21/2007, -1/+4What happens after _finalfinal?
- ghostz00, on 10/16/2007, -1/+4Frontpage....do they even make that anymore?
- KevenM, on 10/16/2007, -1/+4Fun read, even if it doesn't apply to you.
- PabloMac, on 10/16/2007, -0/+3Most of my clients prefer Publisher.
- ronin691, on 10/16/2007, -0/+3People that think in pictures don't type ( that's thinking in characters ) - "Charlie don't surf!"
- GaffleSnipe, on 10/26/2007, -0/+3Yeah, I wrote that article on BittBox.com around six months ago.
http://www.bittbox.com/rants/25-reasons-you-might- ...
and the copycat site's contact page is missing. . . hmmm. . - GaffleSnipe, on 10/26/2007, -0/+3Yeah, it's still copyright infringement even if you list the source because they copied my entire article. Oh, and they edited the first paragraph a bit to fit their site. Their contact page has gone missing. . I can't even email them even though I'm pretty pissed right now.
- centran, on 10/17/2007, -0/+3I know you are trying to be funny but small font is exactly what I am dealing with for my Aunt's company. The design team does a beautiful job but the fonts are so small. I can see them. My Aunt can see them. The design team can see them. But we all have good eyes.
It is something I recognize as a flaw but my Aunt and the design team are more about making things "pretty" then functionality. Sometimes designers get too much into the "design" and there are other things to take into consideration. - centran, on 10/16/2007, -0/+3haha.. clipart. All though I should not laugh cause I use it for small things like sign up sheets that are in house and only out for a week at most.
I have to wonder, is using clipart even legal to use for commercial purposes? - tmoore44, on 10/16/2007, -0/+2same here
- mikehill33, on 10/17/2007, -0/+2just use the < blink > tag instead.
- Appleologist, on 10/17/2007, -0/+2not very compliant for a "hardcore web designer"...
