- thefoxbox, on 01/25/2009, -0/+21Why would anyone be stupid enough to dig this down? It's the complete list from the server that just went down... ungrateful people here...
- synapzgap, on 01/25/2009, -0/+13And dead...
"Error establishing a database connection" - ayeroxor, on 01/25/2009, -2/+13When you get buried to hell, tell my 2nd grade teacher Ms. Barkin that I say hello.
- jggube, on 01/25/2009, -2/+13Very nice roundup here. Most of these are very clean and usable. Ambrosia's one of my most favorite free fonts, modern, stylish, yet not futuristic/tacky looking.
- cloudberries, on 01/25/2009, -2/+13The whole documentary?
- CalcProgrammer1, on 01/25/2009, -0/+10You can always make it into an image, or if you're printing your work you don't need to worry about standard fonts.
- cadmiumpaint, on 01/25/2009, -2/+12The problem with free fonts is that they are often poorly traced copies, or amateur-ish "updates" of legitimate, more well known pay fonts. Secondly they usually lack the full set of glyphs, expert faces (ligatures, small caps, etc) the quality kerning pairs and the reliability that legitimate fonts have.
There are some decent open source fonts out there, but they're not special enough for me to want to use them on any paying jobs. - plecostomus, on 01/25/2009, -6/+16Not to be a newbie/idiot, but are these fonts only used in graphics/etc? I thought you could only use things like Arial/Times New Roman because those are the only things that are standards across all computers. I know that small areas of text can be replaced with Flash substitutes, but I don't really understand how typography works if there are only so many standard fonts. Help?

- cloudberries, on 01/25/2009, -1/+10Generally speaking, when creating copy, or areas of text on websites, you use straight-up HTML. For example, things like the Digg comments you're reading are (more often than not) rendered using fonts installed on your local computer. Therefore it makes sense to limit such things to only the most commonly used fonts which are available on nearly all systems.
Graphics, on the other hand, are just images, so you can put whatever fonts you want into them and display them on any system.
Developers prefer to stick with standards like Tahoma or Arial for websites since they're extremely well designed for readability at small sizes. When working with graphics (website headers, banners etc) there's a lot more freedom - Horonto, on 01/25/2009, -1/+9Link is already pooched.
That's some server they have. - emecks, on 01/25/2009, -1/+9Some of this collection are very similar to paid fonts, MGOpenModata for example is a decent enough free substitute for VAG Rundschrift (and comes with multiple weights/faces). Thanks for sharing :D
- charlove, on 01/26/2009, -2/+9What? Where's Comic Sans MS?
- samfishercell, on 01/25/2009, -0/+7Apparently Microsoft needed something other than Helvetica, because that's why we have the sub-par Arial.
- samfishercell, on 01/25/2009, -0/+7Dangit, sites down. I was interested in checking them out; although, I find it a little odd that it was targeted at web designers?
And dare I start the "They're not fonts" discussion? : http://www.aiga.org/content.cfm/theyre-not-fonts , http://www.inspirationbit.com/when-is-it-wrong-to- ... - satyarth, on 01/25/2009, -2/+8You don't really use typography in blog posts. Typography is mainly for posters and site headers.
- AquaOSX, on 01/25/2009, -2/+7IMHO, it is to your advantage to learn how to use other typefaces at appropriate times. Helvetica is a work horse sanserif, but it's not appropriate for everything, and eventually this little Helvetica fad is going to die.
- inactive, on 01/25/2009, -0/+5Technically, you can use any font on any website when viewing the page on Firefox 3.1+, Opera 10+, Safari, IE 5.5+ , and Chrome using the CSS3 @font-face rule. However, there are some legal considerations when using copyrighted fonts, and the fact that you need different formats for some of the browsers make it a little tricky.
(That's right, IE had it first.) - firewireflow, on 01/25/2009, -2/+7this is an interesting post. its funny that a lot of people refer to graphic design with web design. this is one single part of graphic design and a fairly young one too. what do people think all this stuff you see daily is coming from. the pack of flour you got in your cupboard, the sign of your favorite bar, the intro titles of the movie you saw yesterday ... every is designed. someone needs to sit down and think about it and design it. yes its true that the web has lots of limitations but guys, open your eyes. everything is designed. humans design since the beginning of dawn, starting at cave paintings, bibles from the medieval times, etc. i could go on forever. i'm not saying that everything is great and beautiful but it is designed but someone!
so open your eyes and enjoy our world of designed stuff. - TheKingInYellow, on 01/26/2009, -0/+5well, excuse me. i didn't realize you were the authority of design.
- erikerikerik, on 01/25/2009, -2/+7typography is the art of making "text," look yummy.
And its a whole lot harder then it might look. - russj117, on 01/25/2009, -0/+5helvetica troll
- Psylo, on 01/26/2009, -0/+4Fonts come from an old tradition, as old as writing. There are lots of rules in typography, you can't imagine all. Actually, it's a total *****. Arial, geneva, times.. are ugly and totally unreadable if you print them. Read 500 pages book, printed with times, you will hurt your eyes.
Standards professional fonts are Garamond, Helvetica, Futura.... Read a 500 pages book, printed with good fonts and true typography rules, you won't notice it, but it's help your eyes for reading.
(sorry bad english) - atgmac, on 01/25/2009, -0/+4Made popular 9 minutes ago and already down.
- inactive, on 01/26/2009, -0/+4If I was forced by gunpoint to have sex with a letter it would be the lower-case "g" in Fertigo Pro.
Did I say that out loud? - Diggnabbit, on 01/26/2009, -0/+3Did you only watch the first half of the movie?
- battybattybatt, on 01/26/2009, -0/+3One of the digg rules is you must use English when posting.
- Angostura, on 01/26/2009, -1/+4Whoosh!
- MrMayBeBanned, on 01/25/2009, -1/+4Yeah, up to the last minute he thought he was watching a documentary about a norwegian black metal band.
- ultrafez, on 01/26/2009, -0/+3I the whole font.
- Frostman3D, on 01/26/2009, -0/+3He could be. I'm a designer, and I find most of the fonts in this article to be crap.
- inactive, on 01/26/2009, -0/+3I've been a designer for neigh on a decade and have never used a single one of those fonts. Then again, I actually buy fonts - and most of these are just clones of already existing fonts (though they are paid) - so I guess it's a decent list in the end.
- cloudberries, on 01/25/2009, -0/+3Helvetica has its uses, but it can look very generic and over-used. Used sparingly, and amongst other well designed fonts it can have great impact though.
- bjs3171, on 01/26/2009, -0/+3I don't know, that "Forbidden" only looks like one font to me...
- ayeroxor, on 01/25/2009, -2/+4"22 Free Fonts Most Used By Professional Designers"
FTFY. - partrow, on 01/25/2009, -2/+4Link Dead.
- MacSuxWindozSux, on 01/25/2009, -0/+2Good Call. A lot of people have no idea what a Typeface is.
And while it's not that important these days, it is an interesting distinction. - erikerikerik, on 01/25/2009, -1/+3you can, but its nearly pointless to mess with tracking, leading, kerning etc etc on a blogpost because there way to many variables.
But you can if you want with the help of CSS. - samfishercell, on 01/25/2009, -5/+7Your teachers should be shot then. You're not learning true typographical practices or communication through design.
Major FAIL. - hammburglar, on 01/26/2009, -0/+2mmmmmmm.... hamburgerfountain
- banderwocky, on 01/26/2009, -0/+2Nice fonts.
- tapeworm77, on 01/26/2009, -0/+2Now just download them all, zip em up and upload them to a file-sharing site already :)
- Biscuitz, on 01/25/2009, -0/+2Thank you!
- addiktion, on 01/26/2009, -0/+2Syphon is right. It will eventually be a thing of the past. I mean most of have broadband connections these days and font's aren't terrible large so I don't see us really having a problem in the future downloading fonts this way. The downside is you're computer could become bloated with fonts and explode. But it can't be any worse then Comic Sans.
- Psylo, on 01/26/2009, -0/+1I totally agree with you.
- inactive, on 01/26/2009, -2/+322 Fonts used by Professional Diggers
- mrBitch, on 01/26/2009, -0/+1I dug both of you up, and @altairchitect, thanks for the fonts.
