- 471776, on 04/18/2009, -2/+15When it's done well Flash can be great. The problem is people who don't know how to use it effectively but who still put it all over their websites. Just because some people abuse it doesn't mean the technology itself is at fault.
- Dotcommer, on 04/18/2009, -1/+8Wtf... are you ***** retarded or something?
- mswallace, on 04/18/2009, -2/+8Hell why don't we just all go back to plane old text browsing in a terminal window. Who need the <img src="url"> tag anyway.
- dshPls, on 04/18/2009, -0/+6Unfortunately that kind of graceful fallback depends on the clients budget too. It can be expensive to make the entire site in html and never show it unless someone doesnt have Flash. Lots of times clients can't justify the extra costs.

css is still annoying
java is still annoying
lets all blame the technology! - jordantneff, on 04/18/2009, -1/+5Flash is good for very few things. Mainly streaming videos because of the compressed flv format, some funny flash animations and browser based games. If your entire website is in flash, you should really reconsider doing it in an actual scripting language.
- NUMBER4940, on 04/18/2009, -0/+4But, with Flash, it's usually designed to prevent (deter) the saving of those beautiful images. So...
- Forma, on 04/18/2009, -0/+3Why dig this guy down? He is absolutely correct.
- Pelikoira, on 04/18/2009, -3/+5Gaah, flash. It should only used by youtube and small games.
- r3zonance, on 04/19/2009, -0/+1"HTML is currently almost irrelevant, with hardly any progress being made towards powerful functions or improved intuitive tools for new interface technologies like handheld gadgets."
You obviously haven't seen HTML 5 then.
"CSS is also a big mess right now, inordinate amounts of effort are often required to achieve the most basic functions, and construct even the most simplest of interfaces."
No, that's browsers (read as Internet Explorer) that are at fault.
"The interaction between both HTML and CSS gives way to nothing but headaches."
If all browsers obeyed the "STANDARDS" properly, just write a page that renders correctly in Safari only and see how beautiful you can make both the visible part and the source code of a page.
"The current state of the entire technology is quite frankly pathetic."
Again, that's mostly the fault of browsers (again read as IE).
"Rather than call for improvements, they gratify themselves by maneuvering around these ridiculous issues through 'hacks' and 'tricks', then declare nothing wrong with the process, and raise hell to all who say otherwise."
The problem with Flash is it relies on some proprietary third-party technology to create and view it.
HTML/CSS/Javascript are all open standards that can edited by anyone with any tools. If I have to download a big plug-in to view a site, surely there is something wrong with that?
The day when all the browsers play nicely with HTML/CSS is, I agree, some way off (MS is finally giving in though), but Flash is rarely the ideal solution.
With HTML you can structure your site to display (without the CSS) how you would best like it to be read by search engines, with the most important info at the top.
Add a little CSS to that and you can totally change the layout/view/experience to user without affecting how a search engine reads a page.
With Flash, a search engine doesn't have a bloody clue what you Flash page is about.
The searching is the important bit, as if it can't be found, it may as well not exist. - mattharvey716, on 04/19/2009, -0/+1flash's lack of being able to link directly to a frame and appear in search engines makes it annoying for those who build their websites entirely in flash.
- r3zonance, on 04/19/2009, -0/+1Yes it's nice, but it unnecessarily wastes at least 1.5 seconds during the transitions and the site is almost impossible to navigate.
Great fat FAIL!!!!!
That and I haven't spotted anything that Silverlight couldn't do so far. - Bobby1978, on 04/18/2009, -4/+5In all honesty two of those things you mentioned *are* annoying. HTML is currently almost irrelevant, with hardly any progress being made towards powerful functions or improved intuitive tools for new interface technologies like handheld gadgets. CSS is also a big mess right now, inordinate amounts of effort are often required to achieve the most basic functions, and construct even the most simplest of interfaces. The interaction between both HTML and CSS gives way to nothing but headaches. What works on one browser, usually doesn't in another, and coders are constantly forced to do this balancing act between workability, appearance, and 'valid' coding. If coding is your job, the only way any realistic progress can be made is to utilize the same underlying coding structure for any site you create, severely limiting creativity and freedom.
The current state of the entire technology is quite frankly pathetic. Coders should be rallying for better industry-wide standards of powerful *and* intuitive tools. What I see on the other hand is a bunch of snobs so ingrained in the whole process that they fail to see the flaws staring them in the face. Rather than call for improvements, they gratify themselves by maneuvering around these ridiculous issues through 'hacks' and 'tricks', then declare nothing wrong with the process, and raise hell to all who say otherwise. - dazparkour, on 04/18/2009, -1/+2Sure it does - you need to self close that tag and add alt text.
- Forma, on 04/18/2009, -0/+1The Anders Bergh one is quite terrible.Very inefficient design. Sure, it's a cool effect, once or twice then it gets old a tired. Flash is, IMO, not a good thing to use for an interface. It's slow, it makes the page heavier and impossible to index by search engines.
Not to mention that it does not work on all devices. - dshPls, on 04/18/2009, -0/+1The old Digg comment system is a good example of an annoying non-flash website experience.
- angelo1x1, on 04/19/2009, -0/+1This was the inspiration I was looking for. I am trying to make a Website for my Photos, although I am a beginner, I made it all myself... http://www.VideoRan.Com
- castor49, on 04/18/2009, -1/+1Seems you have developed multible spelling errors.
- r3zonance, on 04/19/2009, -1/+1"you need to self close that tag and add alt text"
Only if generating XHTML - Forma, on 04/18/2009, -1/+1"What works on one browser, usually doesn't in another,"
Not the fault of HTML/CSS themselves. It's the fault of browser builders who refuse to support existing standards. *looks at IE* And even there things are improving.
"The old Digg comment system is a good example of an annoying non-flash website experience."
And the new one uses flash how? - Ffiigg, on 04/18/2009, -3/+21 out of the 15 (Jam3 Media) give you any content without Flash.
I know this is an article about cool Flashness but surely there should be some kind of fall-back (other than a 'Get Flash' link)? - Charmill1974, on 04/18/2009, -2/+0I use most of them creating
- Baryn, on 04/18/2009, -5/+3A good webdev could do all of these in JavaScript
- alwilson, on 04/18/2009, -5/+1mattharvey is still annoying..
- e68895f, on 04/18/2009, -5/+1It seems you have never developed for multible different browsers in multible different operating systems....
- IHATEHIM, on 04/18/2009, -7/+2what's really cool is when you can preview porn videos with just putting your mouse over the video. simultaneously i can watch like 15 girl on girl orgies(i really like lesbian porn) but a shemale might sneak in there but that's okay!
- BicBall, on 04/18/2009, -9/+3<img src="url">
it doesn't need to be any more complicated - tankokhong, on 04/18/2009, -6/+0Can Silverlight do it out of this effect? And I really love http://www.javierferrervidal.com/ So amazing!!!!
- syntaxgs, on 04/18/2009, -13/+3it say I have too down load a flash play too run this??
