    I have spent the last month searching, stumbling, noting, bookmarking and analysing in a quest to find 15 Excellent examples of Web Typography. I’ve chosen them because they make excellent use of type. Some of the examples mimic the typography of print, while others actually leverage web technology, smart CSS and delicious HTML to make their pages not only aesthetically pleasing, but legible, user-friendly and easily navigable.

    In a few days, I will be taking an in-depth look at all these sites, delving into their grids, sifting through their CSS and dissecting their HTML, to discover what makes them tick — and what makes them excellent examples of typography for the Web.

Or people could learn how to code their server side setups so that they don't fold under the first 50 hits. Or people could spend more then $8/month and get a REAL host. So many possibilities - all equally unlikely to happen.
      • johno692001, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I use a Media temple dedicated server (it isn't cheap), but this kind of traffic I've never seen before--on one of my sites. Sorry for the sluggishness. I'm working on further upgrading the server and adding caching. Apologies to everyone for the inconvenience (but it has nothing to do with trying to save money).

  • lauridsd, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13As a web developer, I understand the value of having a basic knowledge of typography, and how to use fonts most effectively. That said, I have to admit that I haven't found a serious typography site, typographer, or other font-geek that didn't take the whole "art of typography" just a little *too* seriously. The whole thing ends up coming off as very effete and pretentious, like overzealous wine snobbery. Being adamant about the superiority of "Helvetica" over "Arial," or ranting ad nauseum about how terrible "Comic Sans" is, is pretty silly and a waste of time. Fonts and their use on a web site, or printed material can be arguably attractive, appropriate and effective, or inappropriate, ineffective and counterproductive. But beyond very basic common sense typography, the passionate rhetoric about the various arcane and esoteric typographical minutia is lost of the vast majority of "users" of fonts; the audiences who see them. It's a strange little cult of people obsessed with such things. Type designers and their clients spend enormous amounts of time convincing themselves that a business' very success depends on the design of their original "official" corporate font, and the strict adherence and use of it throughout the company. Sheesh. Again, I am not knocking those who use typography wisely, but I do think there is a limit to the relevance and value of the obsession with typography.

More and more sites nowadays are cramming as much content and ad's on one page, which confuses the reader. Think of the pre-Internet generation. They do not like having to read all over a page in multiple tables and columns to find the information they are looking for. 9 times out of 10 these people prefer simple pages with a clean layout.

Just attend any graphic design program at a college typography is cool but it is really being propped up for more than its worth. But hey working in one of the most overpopulated field currently in the art/marketing scene ever, some people just need something to cling on as they watch the flood of just as good graphic designers come in and out of the field.
