- subliminalurge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18I have a good camera, but I don't carry it with me at all times. My phone is always in my pocket.
There are many times when I run across something that I'd like to have a picture of, but wasn't anticipating a need to carry a camera with me that day. In those situations, it's nice to be able to use the camera phone to get a mediocre picture when the alternative would have been to get no picture whatsoever.
I, for one, appreciate the tips on how to get the most out of my phone's camera in those situations. - Twoodge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Pretty much all of this article can apply just as well to any camera, and not just phones: how to use the camera, compositional rules and effects and lighting tips etc.
- Diggs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13This pretty much deserves a "No Sh*t!"
- DangerMouse9, on 10/12/2007, -14/+251) Get rid of the camera phone
2) Get a real camera - mlkmnz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11I've got a better tip for you: "leave phone in pocket, bring digital camera and a few brain cells"
- skoles, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7And here I was, swinging my phone wildly, wondering why my pictures looked like ass. Thank you Digg!
- megalopata, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4asif5th: i have both N80 and O-o-o-old 5Mpx Olympus E20. Oly takes much better shots. It is very simple: small lens --> a lot of distorsions, small matrix --> a lot of noise, and you have nothing to do with this. And the article's great, cause it is anyway better to make good shots with bad camera than bad shots with good one.
- DrawingTheSun, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4does everyone really bring their camera with them everywhere they go? i thought not
so having a camera in your phone and knowing how to use it well is great for those moments when your camera is not in your pocket wherever you are - arizonagroove, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"get a real camera if you actually want to be doing anything even remotely artistic in regards to taking pictures"
Art is subjective. You may say you can't go anything remotely artistic with a camera phone whilst others create exhibitions composed of nothing but pictures taken on camera phones. E.g. http://www.sentonline.com/ - DreKor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You should always be able to find a phone that doesn't have a camera. Many large corporations don't allow their employees to have cameras at work since they work with some kind of sensitive information. You may not get a pretty phone, but you'll get a functional one. If you have trouble locating a model at the store, shop online.
- Hawker400, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just got a Q and it's pictures are about the same as my first digital camera. That being said, I don't think camera phones will ever replace actual cameras.
- tonich03, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Great article". Thanks for telling me things I know from common sense. That was ridiculously lame.
- Lewiji, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Last point is inaccurate for phones that advertise huge picture resolutions unless you have perfect outdoor lighting.
The sensor in the phone is tiny and usually on my K800i a 2mp photo will be a lot clearer than a 3mp photo. - Sizzor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Is it just me, or are these the lamest, most basic, no sh*t sherlock recommendations?
1. Try to aim the camera at whatever you want to capture.
2. Make sure your phone's battery has a charge. You'll get better pictures if you have battery power.
3. Try not to put your finger on the lens as you hold your phone.
4. It's better to use a real phone camera, the pretend toy ones just don't take any pictures at all. - 28dayslater, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It's likely that camera phones will one day be as good as today's cameras, but cameras will always be a few years ahead. This relative gap will continue to exist until the Google AI becomes self aware and fixes everything.

i'd like to share a small collection of images that ive taken using my very very old nokia6600 - http://zemographics.com/n6600project.html - FieldAnonymouse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As many people have said before, get a real camera if you actually want to be doing anything even remotely artistic in regards to taking pictures.
I myself have a camera phone. It's used if I see something really neat that I want to show others, but don't/can't have my real camera with me. If I have any intent to actually take pictures for artistic purposes, I'd damn well better have my real camera.
Cameras are just like any other tool. Use the right one for the job and things are so much better. The camera phone is like duct tape. Sure it works, but there are far better solutions. - digitalthom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree with all that has been said especially about a real camera. One thing though, the point about White Balance is very important, even with a regular camera. I thought I had a crappy camera until I experimented with White Balance. Pictures have gotten dramatically better.
- nfollmer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have a Samsung 990 and the thing takes amazing pictures, I used it more than my camera just because it is always with me. Plus, I dont need pictures bigger than 3 MP.
- kaplanfx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@28dayslater I disagree, the fact that phones are getting smaller will seriously hurt the quality of cameraphones. While megapixels keep increasing, the lenses in the cameraphone modules have not increased much in size, leading to extremely poor performarmance in even high end cameraphones, in anything but the best situation. It's like this, low light -> high iso... high iso + small ccd (or cmos) = high noise and poor quality, no matter what the megapixel rating is.
-Kap - BobsYourUncle, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I ***** despise camera phones. When I need a new phone, I make a point of buying one without a camera. This is becoming more and more difficult.
- chitta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Most camera today have mechanisms to counter shake and dim lighting. Although mobile phone cameras donot sport advanced features, the same shortcoming can be used to take some good pictures. Here is a collection of photos (http://onepoint3.blogspot.com/) I've taken with my Moto Razr v3i and almost all the suggestions in the article are nice to follow, particularly when you have a 1.3MP camera. And also, you cannot carry a bulky camera with you always.
- ThisBlows, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Wake me up when my Canon D5 will make phone calls.
- mfratt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I know its MUCH less convenient than a cell phone, but I try to take my DSLR everywhere with me, so I'm always ready to shoot away some quality shots when the opportunity comes up. But, yes, at twoodge said, these apply to most all photography.
I like 11: Camera etiquette; while people may not appreciate you photographing them with a cameraphone, just try it with a DSLR and super telephoto lens ;-) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1WTF....how did this make it to the front page?? Did I miss something about apple iphones or something in it?

Those pictures are crap! Somebody doesn't know jack ***** about photography. - RationalAntaxia, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I would think that all these would be self explanatory. Make sure lens is clean???? Wow. And stay still???? No *****? I guess this would be a good read for someone who has an IQ equivalent to George W.
- chrismartens26, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"Well lit subjects" - No way, I thought dimly lit rooms took the best pictures
"Keep your lens clean" - Applies to even "real" cameras
"Renaming your images" - How does that make the picture look better?
"Use the highest resolution possible" - Who woulda thought?
"Keep it still" - No comment... - Topher06, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Tip 1: Buy a real camera.
- esuomikim, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0The site about nothing...
- DreKor, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Yes, they suck... unless you're in Korea and your phone has a 7MP camera with optical zoom.
- greatromance, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Great article! I'm surprised this hasn't been covered with as much info as this post until now. I'll be using all of these tips. Dugg.
- se7en11, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13) Apply "more blur" filter
4) Post to Myspace - leprix, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2brilliant? i doubt it. let phones be phones and cameras be cameras.
- supervapio, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3phone cameras still suck, but the article is ok, thanks!
- asif5th, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2That's only if you have a ***** phone that you got from your cell carrier's store. I got an N80 with a 3MP camera, takes great pictures.
- winterfresh, on 10/12/2007, -15/+1Thanks alot, thathell! Good article for any person using build-in phone cam. Dugg!
