- evilTak, on 10/12/2007, -14/+172I wish my office didn't have Windows...
- NSMike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+48WARNING:
DO NOT LOOK AT THESE AT WORK.
IMMEDIATE DEPRESSION SETS IN.*
*Only safe for work if you happen to work at one of these locales. If your workspace consists of a pre-fab Dell with a CRT monitor and bluish-gray cubicles possible sudden death or spontaneous self-combustion may occur. Consult a doctor if you have a heart condition. - jtgonzal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+45I'll have to show this page to my manager. My office doesn't even have windows.

- Antha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+27I would love to slide downstairs for a ride on the conference bike.
- skinwill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21Which came first, the boat load of money or the cool office?
- rabiddogma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18Actually can you imagine having your group getting bitched out or laid off on the conference bike? How surreal.
- spyrochaete, on 10/12/2007, -7/+22spelled
- zbeast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14I've been to a few of these places.
Pixar, PDI, Google.
Just for the fun of it I would like to see photos of some of the crappiest places to work.
I'm not talking about "Dirty Jobs" like crappy.
I'm talking about tech company's that suck. boxes in the hallway.
Bathrooms that scare little children.
Fire Marshals nightmares. Server rooms of doom. you know the bad stuff.
I worked at one silicon valley company where bought my own fire extinguisher.
Which was fortunate, A few months later a fire broke out in there server room
when a UPS failed.
I cleared a path to a window with the extinguisher used it to smash open and
window and jump out. - colifis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12The conference bike has 7 people pedaling and one steering. If my work had one it would be 7 people trying to steer and one guy pedaling.
- Antha, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Here are some heartwarming inspirational posters for you:
http://despair.com/viewall.html - Grimdotdotdot, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14To be honest, I think the trailer one and the 'Happy at work' one look crap.
- spyrochaete, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11I went to the Googleplex last week for training on the Google Search Appliance. Holy moly, what an awesome workplace. There's tons of greenery, beach volleyball courts, exercise machines, scooters and electric buggies for quick conveyance, chartered limousines to take people to and from work... and my goodness, the food was unforgettable. I ate lunch outside in the lovely 80 degree sunshine each afternoon, and on the third day Good Charlotte performed a few songs on a little stage.
There are doctors' offices, massage therapists, lectures on spirituality and computing, CGI code snippets posted at the urinals, comfy chairs all over the place, designated quiet areas... It didn't surprise me one bit that 2/3 of the staff wore Google-branded clothing every day.
Even the parking lot was charming since they used Google-coloured pylons!
Except for Good Charlotte it was an absolutely incredible and totally surreal visit.
I wrote about my experience at Google in my blog if anyone cares to read.
http://demodulated.blogspot.com/2006/10/sum-of-hundred-zeroes.html - honds, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Your warning came too late. My work consists of a prefab Dell with a 20" LCD and a giant server rack that hums to me all day. But hey... we have a cool little Atrium and we can eat outside if we want... it's not too bad I guess. No slides though.
Depressing but not too much so. - NSMike, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spelt
...Although "Spelt" is apparenlty not an incorrect spelling of the past tense of "spell"...
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/spelt - mirathi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9want to hear pathetic?
i work for a staffing company, representing dell, sitting in a warehouse of the largest aerospace company in the USA.
four of us placed around folding tables, on a concrete floor, loud warehouse, dust, etc. oh yeah...i have a wal-mart bag hanging from my chair with my lunch in it..
(/whining) - SuperGhost, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I've been on a tour at Pixar and the pictures here do it no justice!! I would love to work there!
- Rsulliv1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Conference bike?
I'd opt for a cubical if this was my alternate.
I believe that it's not necessary to have an expensive/modern/hip workspace (don't get me wrong, it is still awesome.. except the conference bike), but it is absolutely necessary not to have a depressing workspace.
Gray twenty year old cubicles in standard arrangement, rubber plants, and those dreadful 'inspiration' posters are a guaranteed way to sacrifice productivity and creativity. That's my take on it. - rafgar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6My office used to be a supply closset. No joke. A big supply closet, but a supply closet nonetheless. I've got the place wallpapered with webcomics and posters just to make it bearable.
- TargetDigg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5My office is cooler: http://news.thomasnet.com/IMT/archives/cubicle.jpg
- spyrochaete, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6What do you know, I learnt something new today!
- fogster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Everyone seems to like the conference bike. Just wanted to point out that you can buy them online, but they're insanely expensive: http://www.hammacher.com/publish/78743.asp
- CamoChris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This is in a similar vain to the VW plant, but if anything it's cooler:
http://www.mclaren.com/technologycentre/
http://www.research-racing.de/mcl-tc04-1.htm
It's the McLaren Technology Centre, where they design and make the F1 cars (among other things). Most of the building itself is below ground level, so not much of it can be seen, but it's a very stylish place. - el_taco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4lucky!!
- ja1217, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I don't know, that conference bike looks like an accident with multiple fatalities just waiting to happen
- mgrasso, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5The only thing I need in my office are cool co-workers.
- rabiddogma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3My experience has been, the cooler the workspace the longer the work hours. If you have a pool table at work it's likely because you won't have a lot of time to play pool out side of work. Also beware of workplaces with nap rooms or office bunks.
I much prefer a cold grey cube with strict 8 hour days and 5 day weeks than any of these "cool" workplaces. - stealthboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4only three comments and the site is already down? yikes.
EDIT: Just *really* slow. won't last long... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Diggmirror is a life saver!
- mad1stl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You even had your own table and still bitched? Man, I bet your a blast to work with.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Lots of eeeeeeeeee`s in the title....makes it way better?
- SpaceDreamer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2so that's why red bull is so expensive ...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XhlqypFwBaU - Google employees...said this place is way cooler than their workplace.
- m0nk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Yeah, I agree...my office is in "disrepair", as our acting-CEO calls it. It sure would be nice to work in one of those...*sob*
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I have the smallest cubicle with one of those new dell dimension 5150's that has the screwed up case with the hole in the front. It makes this weird buzzing noise all day. It's sad
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Ha! Office? Try a cubicle. Hence the name...
- qbix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I've been to Blur Studios in Venice Beach CA and they have a cool environment too. There are comics laying around everywhere, a red bull fridge, graffiti artwork on several walls, a couple meeting rooms where they have just one huge plasma screen and couches instead of chairs and a table. But yeah, some of these places you have to be there in person to truly appreciate it. I believe a few Pixar DVDs have extras where they explore the studio. Worth watching if you get a chance.
- tomarocco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Their server can't handle being dugg.
- IndyRobin83, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wish my workplace was that cool. I got tired of gray cube walls so I wall papered with colored card stock and all my coworkers write little notes and jokes on it. When I get tired of looking at one color I put up a new color.
- RDurfee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm sitting in a nice gray cubicle coding on a Dell GX280 and a 17" CRT monitor. I'm going to go home now and try not to run my car off the road.
- fsapo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i wish i could take a picture or make a movie of how do we make coffee at my work.
We use a tool to boil the water, and make instant coffee, something like this:
http://www.scite.pro.br/lic/ief2005/_ief2005_i22012.jpg
just with this i think you guys can imagine the rest of my workplace ;) - Margoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It would be interesting to see if these types of successful "cool workplaces" provoke innovative thought. It seems like these businesses are very successful proving that a good working environment is essential for productivity.
- silverbax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Absolutely agree. I think anyone who would enjoy working at one table or in a bullpen must not be very productive.
- light50, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2nice write up fulla
- Sconbox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dugg just for the slide in the office.
- bentracy, on 10/12/2007, -12/+13We don't have windows either. If i hear a noise like thunder i am not sure if it is real thunder or did someone move a box across the floor.
- thescimitar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1CFC-Framestore London has a great work environment too. Similar philosophy, comfortable employees = happy employees = productive employees.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Blogspam that links to a broken blog. Wordpress DB error.
- Bokista, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Whenever I see a conference bike I get upset.
- HonoredMule, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Office wall praise: "Helen and Vanessa for telling a client the business they wanted to launch wasn't a business, for having a honest "we don't...."
wish I could see the rest of that. -
