- gscharf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I for one welcome our new chinese overlords.
- nihilator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Fantastic....yet they lag behind in human rights and government censorship...
- agarc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It is obvious that China is becomming/already is the next world super power. We (USA) had a good run though... ;)
Time to start learning Mandarin! - xLiKx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i'll be visiting in may so i wont see them, o well
- jochex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wow.
2008 is a nice year to visit china. - wearescience, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why don't we see more innovative architecture in the US? I am always amazed at how much more interesting modern architecture is when I travel out of the US.
- sandrino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The 21st century is going to be the Chinese century. We better start learning Chinese and hoping China becomes truly democratic. It will be interesting to see how the US deals with China as it becomes an economic and political super power. China will soon be able to push the US around, specially since we now owe them a lot of money.

China
Total CO2 emissions:2,893 (million metric tons per year)

Percentage of CO2 emissions: 13%
Percentage of world population: 21% - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"in 20 years China will over take USA as the worlds leading economy"
To do this, they will have to first over take Italy, France, UK, Germany, Japan, since
China's GDP is currently ranked the 7th largest in the world.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_GDP_%28nominal%29
At the current GDP average growth rate of 9.8% per annum. Yes, China will reach
US GDP in 20 years, that is ASSUMING the United States will have a ZERO average
growth rate and also that China must maintain an unrealistic 9.8% for the next 20 years.
Now EVEN IF China somehow managed to have a larger GDP than the US, their average
per capita GDP is still crap, they are currently ranked 110th in the world.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_GDP_%28nominal%29_per_capita - WebCester, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I like the Herzog & de Meuron stadium. I live in Basel, CH, where half of the buildings from the last 6 years or so were designed by them. It's their hometown, after all.
- Denjira, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Proud to be a Chinese Canadian..lol!
Beautiful buildings - BugMeNot2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I like the Cosmopolis.
- merloj159, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0shiptoshore,
The tallest building in the world is in Taipei, Taiwan.
http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0001338.html - tonage, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0And we want to force our "values" on everyone else?
I don't want force my values on anyone. I just want to be allowed to keep them for myself. It has become more than people not accepting American values. American values are being attacked. Just look at the comments all over Digg. Any American value you have is mocked and disrespected. - frem001, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Regardless, China is the biggest emitter of greenhouse gases. I guess you could call it a green superpower, if you meant GREENHOUSE superpower"
where did you hear that? i can assure you that the US is still number one in that department, no matter what propaganda Goerge spreads - logosmonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oooo Me likey oppressive totalitarianism architecture.
- tonage, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0And who is making them rich buying all their crap? We are.
- oldcyborg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I believe that things that built like that, upgrade the entire culture, and give even the poorest a sense of pride at the race they represent. We don't have slavery anymore, or not outright at least, so these things are produced, and the people who build them learn skillsets, which they can transfer to new jobs in many places.....
They aren't put to death anymore at the completion of the project. hehehehehe
It's a good thing. Even if YOU don't see it.
CYborg
yeah - cubbieco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Stupid flash add covering part of the picture.
Buildings look awesome! I'd love to go in that media center when its finished.
BTW. Worked in a Chinese import warehouse in the past. The Chinese representative we had said yes their wages are low but the people are happy. If they stay happy then all this political BS really doesn't matter. - ArchiStone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hi. im china architect. my work here
http://www.archibase.net/personal_block/685.html - garagefighter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Worked for me in Firefox, on a Mac even. Can't understand why they used stupid Flash for the navigation though.
- jased, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nice. I like the new airport but then again, I normally do like a Foster design. Interesting to see so many unique designs like the building that broke the building codes. Also, the observation deck on the 100th story would be cool to go to.
- drgabb0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Pxtl: So, when do we get democracy back?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I obediently bow to our chinese overlords, and I hope to be instrumental in rounding up humans.
- shig, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Those buildings are creative structures. Students will most likely study them in the future. I've visited China many times, as a manufacturing engineer, and for all the people here worried about Chinese monopoly on manufacturing can chill. They're at about MAYBE 60% of our manufacturing level. Coupled with that fact, their workforce is largely uneducated, as most employees do not know exactly what they're making, or know how their machines work, or how to repair them. They assemble widgets. A widget flows down the line and they peice that widget with another widget continually in a process, untill finally you purchase it at a discount retailer. They don't have health care, dental, any kind of 401k benefits, and they usually stay on site in an apartment complex the company built for specificly for workers. They rely heavily on foreign steel, mainly Russian, American, and Indian. Militarily speaking, if 1% of our citizens owned a gun, we would vastly out number them, its their nuke technology [m(ultiple) i(ndependently-targeted) r(eentry) v(ehicles)] Clinton gave them we would have to worry about. You can always tell, by looking at a nations children, as to what their government will be in 20 years. Many Chinese children are open minded with a curiosity of international life styles that could spell the end of closed minded Chinese nationalism. In any case it's a good time to be Chinese in spite of their government, and I wish them well.
- frem001, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0*George
the reason these types of building aren't produced (except for rare cases like Zaha Hadid's cincinnati art museum and a handful of others) is because money and a lack of imagination is an issue, also the same architects are used, like SOM. At least KPF (been to their london office) has a bit more imagination on their newer projects. - frem001, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0oh and btw forcing people into a democrtaic sytem is not democratic and democracy doesn't work everywhere.
- fillemvs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Long live the Han Dynasty!
- sarnford, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0We need a bigger boat.
- vaporboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0is it me or does the picture of the Shanghai World Financial Center look a lot like the new world trade center being built at 'ground zero'? (http://www.projectrebirth.org/)
- Antipodes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0China a "Green" superpower? Is that a ***** joke?
Nope, it's not a joke.
Undoubtedly lots of pollution in China but it has already overtaken the US in terms of Solar with 30,000,000 users & 1,000 companies producing solar energy heaters. - pdaphreak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Beautiful. Thanks!
- LordRahl72, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Quote (So, when do they get democracy?)
They wont, the right question is when do we get Communism?
They are the ones that will be owning us soon. So it is US that will have to take there way of living. - socket, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wondered what they were doing with all the money the money they're sucking out of us via Wal-Mart and company.
- antdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://www.businessweek.com//innovate/content/dec2005/id20051223_903049.htm should had been linked instead of the slideshow.
- JudgeDredd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sorry. The last time I was in Beijing, I woke up, turned on CNN international and got the weather for Beijing. It said it was clear and sunny. I opened the curtains and could not see the sky... Here is a link from Taipei Times about Chinese pollution: http://www.taipeitimes.com/News/world/archives/2004/12/14/2003215052
- JudgeDredd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0China a "Green" superpower? Is that a ***** joke?
- PSUViking, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm agreeing with AgoodChap and the others who expressed his sentiment. If you look at some of these buildings and the tech behind them such as the sustainability factor, there is a lot more to talk about than simple minded political statements one way or the other. For instance, what are the implications of the world's fastest growing nation beginning to employ sustainability in its building designs? Could China perhaps be on the verge of becoming the first "Green" superpower?
- AgoodChap, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Please stick on topic here people. This is a technological website. If you want to argue politics go somewhere else. I hear www.gnn.tv is a good place to go for that.
- Lord_oftheTrons, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Man the timing on that slide show sucked, by the time I got 3/4 of the short blurb, it would change to the next one...argg.
Otherwise cool projects. - GTAcrimelord, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I wondered what they were doing with all the money the money they're sucking out of us via Wal-Mart and company."
@ socket
The sad part is, most of the people who can't tolerate China's economic drain on the U.S. economy are the very ones who shop at places such as Wal-Mart; therefore, helping to contribute to the very problem they are trying to combat. Gotta love irony. - lollerskates, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Regardless, China is the biggest emitter of greenhouse gases. I guess you could call it a green superpower, if you meant GREENHOUSE superpower. It's all the oil guzzling cars. There are more cars than there are US people. I'm only half joking; last time I went there, it certainly seemed true.
Despite that, we should all brush up on our putonghua, it seems like we'll be needing it in the coming years. We can only hope that China loosens themselves up from the effects of a Maoist regime in time to avoid another cold war and the business ties are too strong to be broken. - tonage, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If they stay happy then all this political BS really doesn't matter.
Yea, and when they become unhappy, they can just be put in prison. - JudgeDredd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Antipodes, well no *****. Thanks for the misleading information professor. Your statistics are per capita. It doesn't take a smart guy to realize that a nation of 1,306,313,812 people with a rapidly expanding economy will produce a ***** load of pollution. The shear numbers of the populace is what keeps your per capita stats. down. Just how much pollution can a destitute farmer produce??? BTW, I have residency in Hong Kong, a Special Administry Region of the People's Republic of China. Yet the ***** persist in denying me a visa to visit mainland.
- JudgeDredd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I would guess that's because the rural areas of China have no or very unreliable power. Even Shanghai has power problems, causing a major problem in the manufacturing of the cheap Chinese goods we all love. China has been industrializing at an amazing pace for many years, the cost being an infrastructure that can't support it, incredible amounts of pollution, and a sharp divide between the wealthy and the destitute.
- jpyun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You dumbasses who think China is getting all of the profits from Wal*Mart need to read some books about globalization instead of watching Fox News.
Instead you should complain about Wal*Mart having Republican leadership, when they NEED strong welfare and social security for their employees -- because they sure as hell aren't providing health insurance. - ahhell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That is crazy stuff!!! That TV station bulding is wild.
Digg+ - oringo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I wondered what they were doing with all the money the money they're sucking out of us via Wal-Mart and company."
Most of the profit made on the cheap Chinese imports did not go to Chinese government or people. Wal-mart stock holders benefitted the most from these cheap imports. Example: 1 pair of socks solde in Wal-mart:
Price: $0.99
Chinese Worker Get: - twogunsalute, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0.NICE BUILDINGS....Donalad Trump needs to take a look at these
- ph33rm3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wow, those buildings will be incredible
