- jasz, on 06/27/2008, -1/+62thank you sir... you delivered me from ignorance.
- rentmitchum, on 06/27/2008, -2/+39Yes, I was gonna say, I'll take a burial in order to understand what that was about.. Maybe you have to watch TV to get it, like the submission title says Discovery Channel. I don't watch TV.
- 4rp4n3t, on 06/27/2008, -0/+9Um, xkcd actually links to the youtube video at the top of the page with the comic on it...
- porkdanish, on 06/27/2008, -0/+20When you read the comic in Google Reader instead of relying on Digg to alert you to the fact that it's a Monday, Wednesday or Friday, you don't get that bit.
- 4rp4n3t, on 06/27/2008, -0/+9@ porkdanish - I don't rely on Digg, I read it independently... ;)
Fair point though. - changyang1230, on 06/28/2008, -0/+1XKCD could have linked to the video via the comic itself, like what he did for rick roll once.
- rentmitchum, on 06/28/2008, -0/+1I might be one of the only diggers who doesn't read xkcd religiously. I mean, it's good and all, and I did some programming here and there (all my school offered before I graduated was Pascal and Visual Basic) but I didn't get very far in math, and a lot of the jokes are math based. I'm more of a philosophy, science, pharmacology, astrophysics, comics, and console gaming nerd. I do enjoy the more science oriented strips and feel confident the best ones will be filtered to me through digg, so I haven't had it bookmarked yet.
I'll add however that upon seeing the explanation for this one, I liked it enough xkcd will now be in my bookmarks toolbar.

- WickEd101, on 06/27/2008, -11/+0I believe something that tries to be as timeless as XKCD shouldn't imitate something as annoying and randomly popular as a TV ad for Disc. Channel.
- AWBoy666, on 06/27/2008, -0/+22Annoying and randomly popular? Every time I see that commercial, it sends shivers up my spine! It's such a fantastic video that shows both the beauty and complexity of our world. To those of us interested in learning about it (which you obviously aren't), that commercial speaks to exactly why we love the Discovery Channel.
Best commercial EVAR. - Skooma714, on 06/27/2008, -1/+4All I see on Disc. channel is crab fishing and game shows.

- jedisushi, on 06/27/2008, -4/+32This new campaign the Discovery Channel is running is really clever, and some of the longer versions are pretty moving depending on how emotional you feel at the time. ;-) Two of my favorite things in one post - Discovery Channel and xkcd - I love THAT!
- chubbstar, on 06/27/2008, -3/+5an xkcd clips show?....

- DemDude, on 06/27/2008, -0/+3They don't have too bee great big.
I love medium-sized and small breasts even more, as long as they're real and haven't started to reach for the knees yet, breasts are awesome!
*****, I don't think that fits the iambic heptameter either.
- nem0, on 06/27/2008, -3/+0I heart boobs
- breckinshire, on 06/27/2008, -0/+7It doesn't really fit the iambic heptameter -- Maybe "I love some great big breasts"

- Celebrimbor, on 06/27/2008, -0/+9thats what she said...?
- Mononuclear, on 06/27/2008, -4/+9I think this is one of my favorite xkcd's. When I first saw the discovery channel commercial I thought it was awesome and this comic is even greater. The references to the internet and past comics are great.
- bosssmiley, on 06/27/2008, -5/+11Great xkcd homage to a great commercial...
But you *know* this is going to be the next over 9000/ This. Is. Sparta.

- mickstephenson, on 06/27/2008, -25/+12I see this thread is the circle jerk it always is. Randall Munro obviously couldn't think of a joke and just did a 'Pork and Beans strip' and the fanboys lap it up, typical.
- EpicSelekta, on 06/27/2008, -3/+8Or, perhaps, a nerd (this IS an xkcd comic) realized he had such a profound love for such a television station that has left a such a deep impact on the planet, I'd expect to see shocked quartz or an iridium layer as a result.
Being popular doesn't mean it's still not awesome.- Coven, on 06/27/2008, -0/+6"I'd expect to see shocked quartz or an iridium layer as a result."
And thanks to the Discovery Channel, I knew exactly what you were talking about!- mickstephenson, on 06/27/2008, -4/+1Don't lie, you learned that from National Geographic if its not a reality show Discovery didn't make it.
- scooper86, on 06/27/2008, -1/+2A very bad metaphor at least inject some humour into it.
e.g.
I'd have expected to see a burnt layer of jews and a pile of childrens shoes - mickstephenson, on 06/27/2008, -3/+1Jews rhymes with shoes..... LOLZORZ
- ThreeDee912, on 06/28/2008, -0/+1I smell a troll...
- mickstephenson, on 06/27/2008, -8/+4Discovery Channel is full of really ***** American documentaries with more drama than fact and about ***** nobody cares about (like American Chopper, a reality bunch of "manly men" quite obviously trying to hard, and making bike after bike after bike after bike after bike after bike and on ad infinitum). The only TV network on the planet that makes interesting documentaries is the BBC with Horizon and the various Wildlife Documentaries. The only exception to this is Meerkat Manor which is brilliant but still a reality show in the same vein as American Chopper.
- ThreeDee912, on 06/27/2008, -0/+3@mickstephenson,
Both of those shows have been moved of the Discovery Channel because they were not exactly related to non-fiction or science. American Chopper now airs on TLC, and Meerkat Manor moved to Animal Planet.
