Why Twitter Sucks and Some People Shouldn't Use it [COMIC]
penny-arcade.com — Penny Arcade gives a good example of why Twitter sucks when you use it to report everything you do..

- Bukowsky, on 04/24/2008, -11/+282Anyone who actually uses Twitter, knows how true this comic really is....
- Odenized, on 04/24/2008, -0/+11Very hilarious! Although there are a few people who use it for things other than personal updates and RSS.

- chris4404, on 04/24/2008, -4/+14I think most of us already know its Penny Arcade.
- Harabeck, on 04/24/2008, -1/+23I think the point is giving them ad traffic to support them.
- antdude, on 04/24/2008, -10/+14What ads? :D
- GawtMilk, on 04/24/2008, -11/+9You aren't original or funny when you say that, you are last in line of around a million to get AdBlock Plus; so wipe the smug sense of satisfaction off your face. That should be a ":|", not a ":D".
- insllvn, on 04/24/2008, -0/+16Personally, I disable adblock on sites I want to support. Penny-Arcade is one of those sites. Don't be a dick unless the ads are intrusive, these sites need ad revenue to survive.
- heypetray, on 04/24/2008, -2/+3Things I love about Digg: Part 1
-Whenever anybody mentions online advertisements, "Adblock Plus" fanboys come out from the wood work to talk about how much better their internet experience is and how everybody should have it. - strangewill, on 04/24/2008, -0/+3Penny Arcade only advertises games they personally support, and so I'm interested their advertisements a little.
- Harabeck, on 04/24/2008, -1/+23I think the point is giving them ad traffic to support them.
- Auxilium, on 04/24/2008, -9/+5Dugg down the comment abuse comment.
- roosterjm2k2, on 04/24/2008, -6/+1Actually, I would almost bet PA would like this better...their whole site is pretty graphical...so every page hit is being reduced by a good amound of bandwidth each hit...and while they do have some small, unobtrusive ads on their site, I doubt they would mind the ommission...
- arobar, on 04/24/2008, -2/+11The developer who maintains PA wasn't born yesterday. If this was a problem, he'd fix it and just force a redirect.
- Narcism, on 04/24/2008, -2/+40When a new comic comes out, that link will not longer work...
- Gudlyf, on 04/24/2008, -0/+17And, of course, the Twitter account exists (though sans-Bio updates): http://twitter.com/CWGabriel
- BevansDesign, on 04/24/2008, -4/+63I still don't understand why anyone uses Twitter.
- championchap, on 04/24/2008, -2/+25Same here, is it just me.. or is it an entire built around the facebook Status Updates?
Erik is.. eating dinner
I update mine like once a week, i've been eating that same meal for some time.- Laxaloot, on 04/24/2008, -2/+2im not defending twitter, but twitter came before status updates
- nicktripp, on 04/24/2008, -0/+5IMHO, twitter is only useful when combined when used with it's optional IM/SMS features. Using those, it makes pushed/broadcasted status updates and short blog-like entries available to just about anyone at no charge. I don't think it's for everyone, but I've enjoyed using it to keep up with the day to day lives of my friends who live in other states and countries.
- heypetray, on 04/24/2008, -1/+4hooray for online records of our day to day lives! I'm sure our great grandchildren will find it amusing when they read "Heypetray is... getting inebriated"
- Vegiemaster, on 04/24/2008, -1/+3There are a lot of web-comic guys that give little updates to when the comic is going to be done, along with little personal blurbs. MegaTokyo and Questionable Content being ones that come to mind.
- Whaines, on 04/24/2008, -0/+2Leo Laporte and crew always talk about their wonderful experiences with twitter, but they all have thousands of friends. I think the only way to make any use of twitter is to have that many friends.
- actionscripted, on 04/24/2008, -0/+4Think of Twitter as a service that falls somewhere between the instant gratification of IM and the verbosity of blogging. I hate having to respond immediately to IMs (and that "ActionScripted is typing..." *****), and I also would rather not spend fifteen minutes reading a blog post about going to the Apple store.
Twitter bridges the gap.
- championchap, on 04/24/2008, -2/+25Same here, is it just me.. or is it an entire built around the facebook Status Updates?
- WoogieHauser, on 04/24/2008, -1/+2me neither, i guess vanity goes far online

- wildmXranat, on 04/25/2008, -0/+2twitter exists just to stroke your ego and perpetuates the delusion how everything about YOU is so important. its just the rest of the world doesn't give a rat's ass .
- xdeliriumx, on 04/24/2008, -16/+243Thats okay I use digg comments to do the same thing...

- rentmitchum, on 04/24/2008, -0/+19I can really relate to the cottage cheese thing, because my dad works at a prison. He drives a Silverado so he'd probably remember the movie It's A Wonderful Life.
- heypetray, on 04/24/2008, -1/+6Seriously? Because when I went to the kitchen earlier, I put a frozen pizza in and set the microwave to 3 minutes!

- zombird, on 04/24/2008, -31/+3Wow a Penny Arcade comic that got to the punchline. I'm shocked.
- doirn, on 04/24/2008, -1/+3I'm twitting about how twitters are self-absorbed twits for twitting about things they shouldn't be twitting about.

- whoreable, on 04/24/2008, -2/+131I put too much effort into concealing my activities, to go and tell everyone about them.
- Whackly, on 04/24/2008, -3/+42That's actually one of the more useful aspects of twitter... lies and obfuscations. Tweet that you're staying late at work again when actually you're meat slapping some bar skank.
- krets, on 04/24/2008, -3/+12Dugg for meat slapping.

I see nothing wrong with tweeting from the toilet,
http://twitter.com/racco/statuses/794949857- arobar, on 04/24/2008, -1/+6If you only allow friends to see your tweets, it's pointless to post them on a public forum.
- mytimac, on 04/24/2008, -9/+24Twitter is for self-absorbed douche bags.
I hate when the TWIT podcasts have nothing but them talking about what they did with Twitter.- bezz, on 04/24/2008, -1/+15dvorak.org/blog
- LoudMusic, on 04/24/2008, -9/+1So you verbally attack Twitter then profess to listen to their podcasts? Why not just ignore it all together?

- Rheic, on 04/24/2008, -0/+11TWIT = This Week in Tech
- erlkonig64, on 04/24/2008, -0/+6The most recent one was kinda funny. Dvorak said "Let's not talk about Twitter" which brought up like a 5 minute or so conversation about twitter
- WhistlinTom, on 04/24/2008, -0/+1I'm leaving work and going home and then on the way going to listen to TWIT!
- Narcism, on 04/24/2008, -4/+12I use Twitter, have bowel movements and frequently update so I'm getting a kick out of these replies.
- YamiJim, on 04/24/2008, -45/+310omfg can you ***** please STOP LINKING DIRECTLY TO PICTURES
bunch of bandwidth sucking *****, support the web comics add revenue.
http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2008/4/23/- elister, on 04/24/2008, -27/+5I actually prefer direct links, mostly because im sick and tired of having to click on a link to a story of series of photos that span 10 pages. (top 10 hot linux nerds, page 1, next,..... page 10). Seriously, everything could be put on a single page, but were forced to wait 30-60 seconds of banner ads loading just to read a paragraph.
PS
Direct linking to images can easily be fixed by the administrator. Also, directly linking to images (AKA Bandwidth stealing) was bad years ago when bandwidth was expensive, it isnt so expensive these days. I get 100 gig transfer for 10$ a month.- logicalnoise, on 04/24/2008, -0/+28except this a webcomic and the one picture is always by itself with minimal ads.
- heypetray, on 04/24/2008, -1/+1100 gig for 10$? That's gig 10 for 1$, or %10 of your 10$ investment is equal to gig 10!!!
(Syntax Nazi) - YamiJim, on 04/25/2008, -0/+1I'm sure it is intentionally left so that people can embed the comic in certain places in good faith.
But this is flagrant abuse of their charity in said matter.
- WoollyMittens, on 04/24/2008, -3/+33Gabe? Is that you?
- YamiJim, on 04/25/2008, -0/+1i wish.
- BradBrown, on 04/24/2008, -12/+6And pay for those MP3's and movies you downloaded, ya bastards! Now let me get back to Demonoid...
- DrWho520, on 04/24/2008, -12/+5Seriously, dugg down for deep linking. If the community will not police deep linking, then digg will have to start.
- arobar, on 04/24/2008, -1/+11It's not Digg's job to deal with this. Most decent webservers can handle disallowing directly linking to images and the like. It's the site maintainer's job to deal with the problem if it exists.
- reqage, on 04/24/2008, -0/+2I agree with arobar totally. Fix the issue and shut the hell up if you don't want it happening.

- thesonofdarwin, on 04/24/2008, -6/+59Uhm, Digg surfs with Firefox and we do not know what these ads are you speak of. So totally irrelevant.
- reqage, on 04/24/2008, -3/+4With Adblock Plus...
- zspeed78, on 04/24/2008, -8/+5I hope oneday someone invents a 'paycheck block plus' so your boss can skip paying you, because really, who wants to pay people.
- NOFXY, on 04/24/2008, -1/+2so technically, by not loading the other stuff on the page, we save them bandwidth when we just view the image.
- Dubbsacc, on 04/24/2008, -2/+2Most ads are served by the company you purchase them from. For example, Google Ad words are served by Google, it uses Google's bandwidth.
All you do is add a little code to the page to display it from their site. - NOFXY, on 04/25/2008, -0/+2i was referring to those of us who use adblock/noscript

- twertyto, on 04/24/2008, -5/+8Do you work for the RIAA?
- YamiJim, on 04/25/2008, -0/+3I'm sorry but this is how they make their living, they are not rich or famous, they do pretty well from a pretty popular web comic and give a great dealback to their community and charities. Downloading a song or a movie from a multi-billion dollar corp is VERY differnt then robbing from 2 guys who publish a webcomic, especially when it COSTS you nothing for them to get paid.
- HeavyWave, on 04/25/2008, -1/+1I see, you're not against RIAA, you just don't want to pay a ***** cent to artists. Oh, well. ***** you.
- elister, on 04/24/2008, -27/+5I actually prefer direct links, mostly because im sick and tired of having to click on a link to a story of series of photos that span 10 pages. (top 10 hot linux nerds, page 1, next,..... page 10). Seriously, everything could be put on a single page, but were forced to wait 30-60 seconds of banner ads loading just to read a paragraph.
- tholder, on 04/24/2008, -0/+6The only use I can find for it is generating passwords :) http://ok-cool.com/posts/read/118-twitter-as-a-way ...
- ZZax, on 04/24/2008, -3/+66I thought this was the best quote from Tycho's accompanying post.
"The last "tweet" I ever did really explains it all, for me. I was up in Vancouver, and I put up a message saying so, and what kinds of activities I was engaged in. After I did it, I heard a voice - my own voice - saying, "Who the ***** do you think you are? Who are you that you can force your Goddamned minutia on other people, your stupid *****, your stone-ground artisanal condiments? How dare you. You should be ashamed." And I was." - levelwave, on 04/24/2008, -3/+13Ok poop really is coming out...

- ike6116, on 04/24/2008, -2/+11I have to be convinced that twitter provides any utility for people other than self important bloggers who attend blogger conventions.
- JonTheGoose, on 04/24/2008, -2/+54If a blogger tweets in the forest and no one follows him, does he update?

- politik192, on 04/24/2008, -9/+4that reminds me of this time I was in my dorm bathroom and one of my roommates walked into one of the other stalls and said "alright ***** time!"

- MaruLono, on 04/26/2008, -0/+1i am amazed at how many people in this thread don't seem to recognize penny-arcade.
- mith167, on 04/24/2008, -2/+12twitter is possibly one of the worst websites I have ever seen.
- suprfli, on 04/24/2008, -3/+20When I first heard about Twitter my first thought was, "Do I care that someone is eating lunch, brushing their teeth and taking a *****? Don't I get enough spam already? Why would I care about someone's every move and thought?"
If Warren Buffet or George Bush was twittering I might care. I would be interested in their thoughts and insight. What does a guy like Warren Buffet think about and could I gain any knowledge from him and his thoughts/actions? For someone like Bush, I'd love to know what that idiot is thinking. I imagine it would be something like, "I like the color on that wall. I wonder what shampoo Condoleezza uses? My finger stinks."- redfan, on 04/24/2008, -0/+7I wish this Chinese dude would stop talkin' so darn much. I don't even know what he's sayin. Wait, is he Chinese or Japanese? Damn, I know I'll get that wrong when I talk to him.
Hmm, Cheney's got one of them looks again. Hope he don't hit me across the head with a chair again. That hurt the first time.
Ol' Bobby Gates wanted to know about invadin' Iran. I thought I should try eenie meenie minie moe, but I lost track of which one was moe.- Dubbsacc, on 04/24/2008, -0/+1I'll just call him Moey, easier for me to remember.

- davidpoop, on 04/24/2008, -4/+20I use Twitter all the time... but not for BM-related activities. For tracking my poop, I use hoospoopin.com, the social network for tracking my poop.

WTF are these people thinking? -.- - exomni, on 04/24/2008, -1/+2I like the little reflection of the poop coming out you can see in the toilet water.
- The_Red_Monkey, on 04/24/2008, -1/+1I like twitter. Its funny unless someone posts too much crap on there.
- Defuser, on 04/24/2008, -0/+1It's sad to think that there are people out there that have so little life that they have to read the trivial details of OTHER people's lives to amuse themselves. It's even sadder to think that there are people out there that honestly think total strangers care what they're doing at all hours of the day.
- TBoneFever, on 04/24/2008, -1/+1It's not that total strangers care about what I'm doing, or vice versa.. You're totally missing the point.
For example, when I'm at work, and bored out of my ***** mind... I'll read some twits. Every once in a while, I'll reply to a twit worthy of it (usually if someone is asking for help). It makes those 8 hours at work a little less *****.
So it's better to whip out my DS or listen to music on my ipod then interacting with real people?- wellyuk, on 04/24/2008, -1/+1If you're at work and bored out of your mind, shouldn't you either a. ask your boss to give you some work to do, or b. find a different job as opposed to "reading some twits"? If I had no work to do at work or was bored, I'd either ask for some work or make use of my time by doing some learning or reading something USEFUL (as opposed to reading some strangers "twits").
As for "interacting with real people"... you're not really, are you? - battousai86, on 04/24/2008, -0/+0yeah wellyuk ur right, it would suck to get paid to surf the internet id much rather be out in the hot sun or freezing my ass of digging holes in the ground. and im sure my boss would much rather see me reading a book instead of at least looking like im doing something on the computer.
- heypetray, on 04/24/2008, -0/+1@wellyuk
Would hanging around Digg be reading something useful?
