- jmdwinter, on 10/23/2009, -1/+882Bill Watterson is a goddamned genius.
- DangerousP, on 10/23/2009, -5/+734I think this might be the greatest thing I've ever seen on Digg. God, I miss Calvin & Hobbs.
- capyoda, on 10/23/2009, -1/+720more than 14 years later and still funny + relevant. now that's worth a dugg.
- Ghostalker, on 10/22/2009, -6/+562Right on the money.
- dvsbastard, on 10/23/2009, -3/+341I am not sure whether I should smile had how clever it is, or whether I should cry at how accurate it is...
Either way it is brilliant! - hpodity, on 10/23/2009, -3/+329I laughed. I cried. And when I considered the truth I died a little inside.
- AngryDeuce, on 10/23/2009, -4/+263Calvin & Hobbes will go down in history as the best comic strip of all time, no question about it. Nothing else has held up nearly as good over the years...
- lunacraz, on 10/23/2009, -0/+216Bill Watterson is a badass. Never gave into commercialization of his comics, never had them turned into godawful cartoons, *cough*Garfield*cough* never gave into syndication demands to make his Sunday cartoon strips conform to restrictive boxes. Read his anniversary book- he always, ALWAYS gives credit to his influences. And when he realized that he was done with the comic, and he felt nothing more could be added, he retired. Just like that. No running the comic into the ground, no tacky sequels of any sort.
As a kid, the art was wonderful and mesmerizing, and the content was always challenging- I had to read Calvin and Hobbes with a dictionary. As an adult, you realize how great of a comic it is.
Bill Watterson, YOU ARE THE ***** MAN. - cajungal, on 10/23/2009, -4/+132Very pointed cartoon.
- Ryuuken117, on 10/23/2009, -2/+111When I was a little boy, my parents bought me all sorts of "Learn-2-Read" books, and none of them worked. By the time I was five, I was reading at a rapid pace, not because I read the learning books (I never actually tried to read them - "the cat sat on the mat by the rat" can only be interesting for so long), but because I was learning to read through Calvin & Hobbes. I haven't stopped reading since.
- Zera, on 10/23/2009, -1/+102This Cartoon was originally published Feb 16th, 1992.
- BESTenemy, on 10/23/2009, -4/+87 Susie's a consumer in a capitalist society - free to make choices and buy only what she wants to purchase at prices she thinks are fair. Calvin's corporatist - demanding high profit if the business goes well and asking for a bailout if it doesn't. As for the mother - if she gives money to Calvin, then she's corporatist also (preventing bankruptcy of his unsustainable lemonade stand, supporting his inflated price). If she takes money from Susie or from someone else to buy lemonade - she's a socialist. If she just ignores Calvin like Susie did and goes to some other kid's stand to buy cheap lemonade, investing her money into a more efficient enterprise, or holds onto her money instead, then she's a capitalist.
- jdtix, on 10/23/2009, -0/+80A dugg. You heard the man.
- defenswens26, on 10/23/2009, -0/+64Uh... He's still alive. He just stopped doing Calvin and Hobbes in '95.
- Ryuuken117, on 10/23/2009, -1/+64Riveting tale chap!
- cajungal, on 10/23/2009, -1/+63I actually meant pointed, as in a sharp, incisive statement which can be described as an epigram which is any terse, witty and often antithetical statement.
- milican, on 10/23/2009, -11/+73Except for the subsidy at the end, that's how a voluntary economy works. He charged an assload, he paid himself too much, he skimped on the product. The customer balked and he's hosed. Perfect. He'll be out of business in no time and another customer oriented business can come in and take over. I'm sure Hobbes already setup shop around the corner... ;)
JOhn - mrpunman, on 10/23/2009, -1/+56Dugg for accuracy. And Calvin and Hobbs
- axiomata, on 10/23/2009, -1/+54It is pro free market, and anti-corporatist.
- Gdietz, on 10/23/2009, -1/+54Where is Bill Watterson? I'm going to kidnap him, give him a pen and paper and force him to draw comics like in Misery. This is cockadoody!
- psolms, on 10/23/2009, -4/+56cool story bro
- norwegianlegion, on 10/23/2009, -0/+51Enthralling anecdote, comrade!
- Buckeye17, on 10/23/2009, -6/+52What? How is that relevant?
- kitsua, on 10/23/2009, -0/+45Fascinating fable, friend!
- mpn401, on 10/23/2009, -2/+46Further driving the point home...
- sleeknerve, on 10/23/2009, -1/+45Its amazing the amount of textbooks i read that will have a Calvin and Hobbes cartoon to display a point. Calvin and Hobbes, a comic is more intellectual than many books ive read.
- superkendall, on 10/23/2009, -1/+42The end even hints at our current problems, when we elect in a "mom" too interested in coddling the corporatist...
- swanny89, on 10/23/2009, -5/+45Was that really necessary?
- lesbianlasergun, on 10/23/2009, -1/+41*beatboxes*
- SanAhn, on 10/23/2009, -0/+40Digg needs more Calvin & Hobbes.
- Coufu, on 10/23/2009, -0/+39RIP Calvin and Hobbes*
Fixed. - ExoBit, on 10/23/2009, -0/+38I got scared when I read this comment, because I started hearing beatboxing on the TV upstairs immediately as I read it. It was kinda creepy.
Just thought I'd share. - rocknog, on 10/23/2009, -1/+39Unfortunately, the subsidy at the end is how our economy works - thus, he never goes out of business and he is, in fact, rewarded for his practices.
- brownsound00, on 10/23/2009, -0/+37Not only that, but it's so god damn relevant. I can't even count the times that Calvin and Hobbes strips have shown up on digg over the years... and they pertain to different issues in society as if they were written for them specifically. Then I think about the issues when i first read the comic as opposed to seeing it on digg. It's just mind boggling!
- ExoticKosher, on 10/23/2009, -5/+41MARS IS AMAZING!!
- iamacyborg, on 10/23/2009, -6/+39The best thing about Bill Watterson is that he never sold out and he never let anyone make a "Calvin and Hobbes Movie" or merchandise. Contrast with whats her ***** that wrote Harry Potter.
- WiretapStudios, on 10/23/2009, -0/+32*Hobbes.
- aenemacanal, on 10/23/2009, -0/+31regaling memoir, old bean!
- SasaLukac, on 10/23/2009, -3/+32I'd say The Far Side has held up just as well... granted those are the only two I can think of with that much influence.
- Zera, on 10/23/2009, -1/+30Exactly.
- norwegianlegion, on 10/23/2009, -2/+30That was ***** amazing!
- onefineline, on 10/23/2009, -0/+28uhh, i think he's still alive. he would be 51 years old
- Codik, on 10/23/2009, -5/+32While I respect him for not selling out, I don't think selling quality merchandise counts as selling out. I would sure love to have a mini Calvin figure next to my computer. And think how many people would love to have a plush Hobbes.
Not all merchandising equals selling out. - DaviDTC, on 10/23/2009, -1/+27huh?
- rob132, on 10/23/2009, -1/+26Raving recantation, chum!
- meddelem, on 10/23/2009, -0/+25that's what a subsidy is.
- Amadeus2490, on 10/23/2009, -2/+26This is the best Calvin And Hobbes ever!
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 10/23/2009, -3/+26Nah, if Suzie and the rest of the children on the street had an equal stake in the lemonade stand that would be socialist.
If Suzie and the other children had an equal stake in the lemonade stand through the mother that would be communist.
That's not really what a corporatist is either, and that really depends on whether you are considering the mother the government or a private citizen. If it's the former she would most likely be a neoconservative. If it were the latter she would just be a bad investor.
Only if she invests her money or comes to own her own competing business is she properly a capitalist. If she goes and buys from another lemonade stand she is a consumer participating in a capitalist system. If she hangs on to her money she cannot properly be said to be either. - OptionalPirate, on 10/23/2009, -1/+24A digg?
- Protonz, on 10/23/2009, -1/+24I am not sure if it is pro or anti free market.
It accurately portrays the negatives of corporations, but then shows how the free market punishes that behavior. -
