- pmctosh, on 03/08/2008, -6/+46Now that the Toronto Transit has said they have plans to install some 1000 cameras in the transit system this really hits home. Oh, and there will be no humans observing what these cameras capture we have been assured by the "authorities." I guess it really is for our own safety right.
- inactive, on 03/08/2008, -6/+42This visage, no mere veneer of vanity, is it vestige of the vox populi, now vacant, vanished, as the once vital voice of the verisimilitude now venerates what they once vilified. However, this valorous visitation of a by-gone vexation, stands vivified, and has vowed to vanquish these venal and virulent vermin vanguarding vice and vouchsafing the violently vicious and voracious violation of volition. The only verdict is vengeance; a vendetta, held as a votive, not in vain, for the value and veracity of such shall one day vindicate the vigilant and the virtuous. Verily, this vichyssoise of verbiage veers most verbose vis-à-vis an introduction, and so it is my very good honor to meet you and you may call me V.
- inactive, on 03/08/2008, -0/+36You have chosen, or been chosen....
- SquigglyP, on 03/08/2008, -7/+39and it would work perfectly if it weren't for those pesky humans.
- LucasVB, on 03/08/2008, -0/+31Pick up that can.
- danconia, on 03/08/2008, -0/+27Also note how none of these cameras ever point in toward the government. No CCTV in Congress, none in any meetings between the President and anyone else, and no one to oversee the government other than... *sigh*... the government itself. Boy I'm not sure we can expect much oversight from someone who is responsible for regulating themselves. It's like the government has more rights than the individual these days and very dangerous for all involved.
- TobiasParker, on 03/08/2008, -2/+28If i can't dance i don't want to be part of your revolution.

Y'know... strangely enough, I'm halfway through reading V for Vendetta right now... Maybe some Rage Against the Machine would also go well?... Sleep now in the fire, boys! - sarixe, on 03/08/2008, -0/+23POSER!

Tell her the red skirt looks great, by the way. - GramarNatzi, on 03/08/2008, -0/+19So as long as someone else is worse off we have no right to complain?
- danconia, on 03/08/2008, -0/+19I don't know if anyone here is interested in the actual philosophy of anarcho-capitalism and "voluntarism" but it's actually quite interesting. It's based upon the simple assertion that coercion (ie force) used against someone else is morally evil unless in the case of self-defense.
Seriously check it out sometime, this guy has a podcasting series all about it:
http://www.FreeDomainRadio.com - kawstick, on 03/08/2008, -12/+29Just what are you doing on PUBLIC transit anyway? They are putting cameras on buses because drivers are being attacked, and its beginning to be a problem in TO. It isn't like they will be posting them at bus stops and along routes outside of the bus where you have some privacy through numbers.
You should feel content to sit like you normally do, wearing your tinfoil hat. - Khast, on 03/08/2008, -3/+20Hmm...net neutrality....cameras...governments which are "overprotective"...wiretapping...
George Orwell may have been a couple years off... but I bet his spirit is grinning like a bird fed cat. - GramarNatzi, on 03/08/2008, -0/+16And who watches you and MrPig's mother? Me!

- Vowieotw, on 03/08/2008, -3/+19In its essence, Anarchy is quite noble. It is equality for all, order without government, and peace without war.

- Azerael, on 03/08/2008, -0/+14What Orwell wrote wasn't a prediction for the year 1984 specifically, and I doubt his spirit would be exactly "grinning" at it coming true.
- kcdstudios, on 03/08/2008, -2/+16THAT is not government oversight

- MacEnvy, on 03/08/2008, -0/+13Yeah, I mean, it's not as though there are countries where there are surveillance cameras everywhere. Oh, wait ...
- StormyAaron, on 03/08/2008, -3/+16Good evening, London. Allow me first to apologize for this interruption. I do, like many of you, appreciate the comforts of every day routine- the security of the familiar, the tranquility of repetition. I enjoy them as much as any bloke. But in the spirit of commemoration, thereby those important events of the past usually associated with someone's death or the end of some awful bloody struggle, a celebration of a nice holiday, I thought we could mark this November the 5th, a day that is sadly no longer remembered, by taking some time out of our daily lives to sit down and have a little chat. There are of course those who do not want us to speak. I suspect even now, orders are being shouted into telephones, and men with guns will soon be on their way. Why? Because while the truncheon may be used in lieu of conversation, words will always retain their power. Words offer the means to meaning, and for those who will listen, the enunciation of truth. And the truth is, there is something terribly wrong with this country, isn't there? Cruelty and injustice, intolerance and oppression. And where once you had the freedom to object, to think and speak as you saw fit, you now have censors and systems of surveillance coercing your conformity and soliciting your submission. How did this happen? Who's to blame? Well certainly there are those more responsible than others, and they will be held accountable, but again truth be told, if you're looking for the guilty, you need only look into a mirror. I know why you did it. I know you were afraid. Who wouldn't be? War, terror, disease. There were a myriad of problems which conspired to corrupt your reason and rob you of your common sense. Fear got the best of you, and in your panic you turned to the now high chancellor, Adam Sutler. He promised you order, he promised you peace, and all he demanded in return was your silent, obedient consent. Last night I sought to end that silence. Last night I destroyed the Old Bailey, to remind this country of what it has forgotten. More than four hundred years ago a great citizen wished to embed the fifth of November forever in our memory. His hope was to remind the world that fairness, justice, and freedom are more than words, they are perspectives. So if you've seen nothing, if the crimes of this government remain unknown to you then I would suggest you allow the fifth of November to pass unmarked. But if you see what I see, if you feel as I feel, and if you would seek as I seek, then I ask you to stand beside me one year from tonight, outside the gates of Parliament, and together we shall give them a fifth of November that shall never, ever be forgot
- inactive, on 03/08/2008, -1/+13and they thought everyone would be a number.
- nitsnipe, on 03/08/2008, -2/+14It's all for our own safety of course.
- xhazerdusx, on 03/08/2008, -0/+12Bear in mind its from 1968. That comic, if penned today, wouldn't be anything special. Back then, this was probably considered off the wall.
- mhearne, on 03/08/2008, -1/+12On the Dallas DART, they put cameras _and_ microphones on the trains and buses not because of violence, but because certain people were drinking and shooting dice in the back. These would be the ones who _don't_ complain about sitting in the back of the bus.
- inactive, on 03/08/2008, -0/+11Baltimore has these blue cameras all over the place that are there for our security...yet we're still consistently in the top three for highest murder rate.
- musleypope, on 03/08/2008, -0/+11Unless the people are retarded.
- tech42er, on 03/08/2008, -2/+13He means it was prophetic at the time.
- madfrogurt, on 03/08/2008, -3/+14Other than the lack of curfew, stringent social classes, militarized police, or stripping of identity its spot on. So it was prophetic enough to predict the use of security cameras and sidewalks. Amazing.
- GorfTron, on 03/08/2008, -0/+10It's ok. They put stuff in the water to make you forget.
