Three Cartoons That’ll Scare the Kids
mentalfloss.com — Among other legendary TV show intros, I posted the intro to PBS ’ Mystery! the other day, and the enthusiastic response from our readers who hadn’t seen it in some time but remembered it fondly convinced me that we need more on the site in that vein, and stat.

- johnnywatkins, on 08/20/2008, -5/+17It's amazing how many things out there that will scare kids. I saw a 9 year old at the theater for "Dark Knight" the other day. Great movie but come on. Just a tad violent for a child. And yet Disney advertised on Egotastic! Love it.

- Tracknod, on 08/22/2008, -9/+5I bet your the one that says kids MUST wear a helmet riding a bike and that you can't play dodge ball in school... Please. I am sure I am not the only one here that grew up on horror flicks. I remember going to see Friday the 13th and Don't Answer the Phone in a double feature at the drive in with my mom when I was 6. Sure it scared the crap out of me while watching it, but my mother was able to teach me about the difference between reality and fiction and all was well. Oh God... THINK OF THE CHILDREN!!!!! Idiot.... Are you sure YOU weren't to traumatized by seeing a fake magic trick??? That stuff on the screen isn't real.. I guess you were never taught that.
- nevetssav, on 08/22/2008, -4/+7Clearly it made you a tool, though.
- Tracknod, on 08/22/2008, -5/+4How did it make me a tool.... Please explain... because that is laughable at best ;)
- bagboyrebel, on 08/22/2008, -1/+4"I bet your the one that says kids MUST wear a helmet riding a bike"
sorry, but everyone should wear a helmet on a bike, I don't care how good you think you are but you can't account for everyone else. - CaptOblivious, on 08/22/2008, -1/+1bagboyrebel
Wow I 'm glad you aren't in charge of my life!
You do realize that the number of accidents on (pedal) bikes has RISEN since people like you have made helmets a "requirement". There are studies, check google. - iMoth, on 08/22/2008, -0/+3i once wore a helmet while riding a bike..
my girlfriend left me, i got mauled by a badger and then i got cancer.
just sayin - bagboyrebel, on 08/23/2008, -0/+1@CaptOblivious
that's because too many people neglect any other safety rules when riding a bike because they think that the helmet will protect them. Most of the people I've seen riding bikes don't even realize that a bike is supposed to follow the same rules as the cars, as in they have to wait for their turn at an intersection and they have to ride with traffic instead of against it. Even if there have been cases where accident rates have risen, the severity of head injuries is usually lower than if the rider wasn't wearing a helmet.
- Scriabin, on 08/22/2008, -1/+9I remember going through a period when I was young where I was scared of a movie. I watched 'Candyman', a film that honestly isn't that scary, and I was terrified by it. I was afraid of the washroom mirror for a few months. I even had my Grandmother go and turn on the light for me before I went in for a week. Since my Grandparents are from the 1930's, they used to taunt me, and try and scare me about it, and used to bluntly say I was being a chicken *****. I grew out of it, and grew up in the process. Hell, I think kids should be horrified when they're young by something, and pushed to grow out of it! How else would I have learned to deal with unnecessary fears? When I'm adult under a therapist? Screw that, I have a life to live.
- total1337ness, on 08/22/2008, -0/+1I remember watching a movie with a murderous clown who could only be seen by some children, I believe it was called "It". There was one scene where he comes out of a drain and kills a boy. I wasn't scared when I watched the movie but for the next year and half I was scared ***** of drains and the bathtub.
- poet, on 08/22/2008, -0/+1@total1337ness: Aside from your newb name, you are true about "It". Perhaps the only thing that scared me as a child. I don't float paper boats down gutters anymore.
- roebeet, on 08/22/2008, -2/+4That was me with my kid. Suck it up.
- roxgod666, on 08/22/2008, -3/+2so...there are tons of kids that watch family guy, south park, rated R movies etc... when i was in 4th grade, all the kids did was talk about dildos and condoms
- poet, on 08/22/2008, -0/+1What grade are you in now? 5th? 6th?
- roxgod666, on 08/22/2008, -0/+05th and 2 quarters sucker hehe
- nevetssav, on 08/22/2008, -1/+2I don't mind a kid like that seeing it, but when I saw TDK, there was a kid CRYING during one of the more dramatic scenes...and they weren't taken out of the theater...
- quarkie, on 08/22/2008, -0/+3I gotta agree with this. I saw movies like that all the time as a kid - in the comfort of my own home until my parents knew I was mature enough to take me to see them in the theatre.
- poet, on 08/22/2008, -0/+1Should've asked for a refund. ***** crybabies.
- ElAmo, on 08/20/2008, -21/+10Oh.... it's babyman. Let's all digg him up.
/sarcasm.- skabyss, on 08/21/2008, -17/+3Oh.... it's another digger bashing babyman. Let's all dig him up.
/sarcasm.- damian7, on 08/22/2008, -11/+2Oh... it's skabyss. Let's contemplate who to dig and who to dig down.
- gbarberi, on 08/22/2008, -2/+12How about we bury all three of you and forget this thread ever existed?
- HMMcKamikaze, on 08/22/2008, -2/+2However, you're unburied comment will remain an unpleasant reminder of what should have never been.
- Meocross, on 08/22/2008, -5/+0C-C-COMBO B-BREAKKERRR!!!
- damian7, on 08/22/2008, -5/+1@barberi
How about I bang your mother and then forget she ever existed?
- skabyss, on 08/21/2008, -17/+3Oh.... it's another digger bashing babyman. Let's all dig him up.
- Rewebbed, on 08/20/2008, -0/+24The first two were like "yeah yeah.."
But that last one was like "*****?"- Zarokima, on 08/22/2008, -2/+3I agree about the first two, but the last one just made me chuckle. Perhaps I've been spending too much time in the wrong places on the internet.
- Ageroth, on 08/22/2008, -0/+1Jesus titty ***** Christ, what the ***** *****.
apparently i didnt get my dose of acid today- poet, on 08/22/2008, -0/+1Do not try the brown acid!
- carbonfree314, on 08/20/2008, -0/+6The Alphabet one wasn't creepy. It was way overdone. I guess teh interbutts has removed all ability to be disturbed.
- poet, on 08/22/2008, -0/+1Way overdone? You obviously have no frame of reference for when that short film was made and the state of motion pictures/short films at the time.
- UltramegaOK, on 08/21/2008, -7/+1Are you afraid of the Dark?
- skabyss, on 08/21/2008, -0/+13Because that was a cartoon, wasn't it *****?
- insinuate, on 08/22/2008, -0/+2wow. *****. I learn a new word from Digg everyday.
- skabyss, on 08/21/2008, -0/+13Because that was a cartoon, wasn't it *****?
- welliwonder, on 08/21/2008, -2/+1Cool!
- mstachiw, on 08/21/2008, -1/+31where's The Adventures of Mark Twain?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ak3z2Pm7Iwg- dubhglais, on 08/22/2008, -0/+9OMFG. That still disturbs me to this day. *shudders*
- Tyrghast, on 08/22/2008, -0/+3I saw that for the first time a couple months ago and I shat my pants.
- bootie, on 08/22/2008, -0/+2Mark Twain's voice is Brooks from Shawshank Redemption....get busy living or get busy dying
- RoflCoptah, on 08/21/2008, -1/+8vincent is such a super emo
- Tyrghast, on 08/22/2008, -0/+2He has access to good drugs it would seem...
- DubbGirl, on 08/22/2008, -9/+0Awesome post Mr Babyman.
- ZackScott, on 08/22/2008, -0/+3Seriously, as a kid, I spent a lot of time at my uncle's house and he showed me creepier cartoons than this. But hey, some people would rather spin women and chase chickens rather than the other way around.
- Darkaged, on 08/22/2008, -0/+4Show me on the doll.
- leif777, on 08/22/2008, -0/+1that was teh awesome...
- Mootabolife, on 08/22/2008, -0/+4Just because it's animated, doesn't make it a cartoon. You might need counseling.
- Puppetfunk, on 08/22/2008, -0/+3Your uncle and you sat alone and watched his collection of special cartoons? That's pretty creepy.
- Darkaged, on 08/22/2008, -0/+4Show me on the doll.
- thorstrongstone, on 08/22/2008, -4/+3I am the greatest person that the world has ever known. I am smart, funny, and deep. My mind is an endless sea of despair and genius and I......um....
...*****, sorry. Lynch always has a way of bringing out my pretentious side. - HammondOrgan, on 08/22/2008, -9/+2I watched "Silence of the Lambs" when I was 3 weeks old. Some kids just need to grow up.
- insinuate, on 08/22/2008, -0/+83 weeks old, yeah I'm sure you caught and remembered all of it.
- ASSASSYN360, on 08/23/2008, -0/+1Wow...you are an idiot.
- fightingforair, on 08/22/2008, -0/+6Maybe someone mentioned it already here, but where is "Watership Down"? Great cartoon about a great novel, but wow did it scare me as a child. Rabbits tearing each others throats. Never looked the same at at rabbits again.
- Zarokima, on 08/22/2008, -0/+4Even in real life they're not all fuzzy-lovey. My uncle had one that was ***** MEAN. And it had been won from some Easter thing at the lake from a pet store, so it wasn't a wild one or anything. After it attacked the dog (little Pomeranian, still has a scar on her side) we just decided to eat it. Its flavor was much better than its attitude.
- JT114881, on 08/22/2008, -0/+1I think everyone should read that book. Watership Down - Richard Adams
- leif777, on 08/22/2008, -0/+1***** AWESOME book... and yes, that cartoon freaked me out
- Meocross, on 08/22/2008, -2/+0Get them to watch black lagoon, they will be too scared to speak after just 1 episode pahlease.
- Meocross, on 08/22/2008, -2/+1Get them to watch black lagoon, they will be too scared to even speak, like how old are these cartoons 50?
- NoMercy, on 08/22/2008, -0/+5did anyone else get nightmares from "little nemo" that black ***** scared the ***** out of me
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0104740/- spootmonkey, on 08/22/2008, -0/+2My grandma had that movie when I was a kid..scarred the hell out of me.
- onestrawplz, on 08/22/2008, -1/+1yes that movie was ***** terrifying.
- Arxilca, on 08/22/2008, -0/+1It freaked me out to no end as a kid (especially the black stuff and when Nemo sees the king he helped kill in the water) but I found it recently and my sister and I watched it. It wasn't as messed up as we remembered and frankly, I was a little disappointed about that.
- Tyrghast, on 08/22/2008, -0/+8Alice in Wonderland.
- antdude, on 08/22/2008, -0/+1And not Disney's version.
- hectordejesus, on 08/22/2008, -0/+3What the ***** was with the last one? I had to turn on the lights after watchin' that... Can someone say "L-S-D"?
- HoodsDream, on 08/22/2008, -0/+1Can anyone say Joker from LSD
- gnuoyiy, on 08/22/2008, -2/+1Ren and Stimpy?
- yeahaboutthat, on 08/22/2008, -0/+2When I was a kid, I was totally freaked out by an old Bugs Bunny cartoon--the one where he is sleeping, and floats out of his rabbit hole and into the lab of a mad scientist who needs a brain for his giant monster. It absolutely gave me nightmares, but each time it was on, I'd still watch it, terrified and fascinated at the same time.
- TheCash, on 08/22/2008, -0/+1"James Mason as the narrator (film buffs will remember him as the lecherous protagonist of Kubrick’s Lolita)"
Or as Captain ***** Nemo in Disney's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea! - ingenious28, on 08/22/2008, -0/+0There was an animated movie made back in the 70's called Wizards. Freaky as hell.
http://animated-views.com/2004/wizards/ - FooFighterFan, on 08/22/2008, -1/+2oh, screw you guys, lol... the scariest cartoon by far i ever watched as a kid was "The Last Unicorn". They even cuss and sh*t, haha!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m5RpRxS28RA
UNIIIIICCOORRRNNNNNNNNNN!!!! anyone? anyone?- Durrok, on 08/22/2008, -0/+1After watching that I have vague memories of seeing that sometime in my childhood. Nice blast from the past.
- spkrcity, on 08/22/2008, -0/+1*****. I thought you were gonna show this anime cartoon I rented as a little kid.
I would have been about 5 or 6, so 1988 or 89. This kid had like a robotic toy horse that could fly. He would race around and go on adventures. It was pretty dark. In one scene I rememeber he's standing on a beach and someone tells him he's at the end of the world.
I've been trying to find out what that cartoon was for like 10 years. Help.- leif777, on 08/22/2008, -0/+1whoa... flash back... let me know if you find out
- leif777, on 08/22/2008, -0/+1and... the music of America... HAR!
- twoifbysee, on 08/22/2008, -0/+1omg one of my earliest memories! so good!
- colasrtney, on 08/22/2008, -0/+7Kids? David Lynch's *anything* scares me.
- AManWithNoName, on 08/22/2008, -0/+3The Brave Little Toaster. Between the exploding air conditioner, the junkyard euthenasia, and the sick demented chop shop, that movie would make any child ***** brix.
- spkrcity, on 08/22/2008, -0/+1Oh ***** flashback. I always felt bad when they were bullied by the newer appliances at The Master's mom's apartment.
- sarog, on 08/22/2008, -1/+1more mentalfloss crap
- Tomamama, on 08/22/2008, -0/+4Four words: Courage the Cowardly Dog. My friends and I seem to mention how legitimately creepy the show was at least once a month.
- adrames, on 08/22/2008, -1/+2I like rusty spoons.
- poet, on 08/22/2008, -0/+1I like it when the red water comes out.
Salad Fingers RIP
- poet, on 08/22/2008, -0/+1I like it when the red water comes out.
- spkrcity, on 08/22/2008, -0/+3I had a Winnie the Pooh VHS where Rabbit was lost in the woods. I think it was Winnie the Pooh and Tigger Too. Anyways, I would feel so scared for Rabbit that I'd hide in between the couch and my wall.

- surferbum, on 08/22/2008, -0/+1that last one...the alphabet was fhkin scry as hell...
- hillaryj, on 08/22/2008, -0/+3Not really a cartoon, but Willie Wonka in the Chocolate Factory from the 70's. I saw it again recently and realized it looks like they're on an acid trip the whole time. name something scarier than an acid trip.
besides a 3rd term of George Bush.- HoodsDream, on 08/22/2008, -0/+1stfu
- poet, on 08/22/2008, -0/+1Acid trips aren't scary unless you're ignorant. Being mauled and mutilated by a bear until you slowly and painfully die over the course of 8 hours is much scarier.
- ThenWang, on 08/22/2008, -0/+2chainsaw maid
- LucerinRed, on 08/22/2008, -0/+1Higurashi no naku koro ni has got to be one of the creepiest animations ever. Zomg the skull bashing brought on by cute, innocent-looking preteen girls.
- HammondOrgan, on 08/22/2008, -2/+0Seriously, NOBODY caught the sarcasm in that. No *****!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- poet, on 08/22/2008, -0/+2A poor work of satire you have created. In doing so, you are being blocked by multiple users. Aren't you lucky?!?! (That last sentence was sarcasm, in case you need an example of what sarcasm actually is.)
- HammondOrgan, on 08/22/2008, -1/+0In the future when trying to sound intelligent, please do not revert to the sentence structure of Yoda.
- ASSASSYN360, on 08/23/2008, -0/+1The inability to detect sarcasm means you are stupid.
- HumanRecalled, on 08/22/2008, -1/+1factoid: The opening to Mystery Theater can not be classed as a cartoon ! No kids even if this were would not have been up to watch this !
cartoons are funny and humorous hence the toon part- poet, on 08/22/2008, -0/+1Learn to phrase together words in a proper manner before you attempt to communicate to replying voices other than the ones in your head.
- jax9999, on 08/22/2008, -0/+1pfft, molly coddles youngsters. Now I can name a few cartoons that would ***** you up.
Watership down. The rabbits so weren't fluffy bunnies, they were brutal animals and it showed.
the plague dogs... very sad
when the wind blows... yeah, i still can't sit through this one.
the secret of nimh... when the house starts to sink.. - toothcake, on 08/22/2008, -0/+1I was about to go to sleep before I watched the third movie. Now if I have a dream of a girl singing the alphabet, I'm going to tweak on you Mr. Babyman.
