- noahgelman, on 08/26/2008, -2/+148The real story here is that DC bought the rights for Superman 'forever' for only $130
- inactive, on 08/26/2008, -1/+93"Past accounts suggest Siegel and Shuster, both 17, awkward and unpopular in high school, invented the meek Clark Kent and his powerful alter-ego, Superman, to attract girls and rise above their humble Cleveland beginnings." The question is: Did it work?
- ironeus, on 08/26/2008, -1/+65Though tragic, it's a very interesting personal story behind Superman's creators.
- inactive, on 08/26/2008, -6/+60Dugg for Jewish Lithuanian immigrant.
What? It's not like there's more than 8 of us on this planet. - cawpin, on 08/26/2008, -0/+45Dugg for "almost."
- tekkitan, on 08/26/2008, -4/+36Wow. Now I'm almost proud to be a native Cleveland'er
- inactive, on 08/26/2008, -0/+29Often overlooked or forgotten is the influence of "Doc Savage"
1. First appears in 1933
2. Lives in New York city.
3. First name is Clark
4. Nickname is "The man of Bronze"
5. Has a fortress of solitude in the arctic, which predates Superman's'.
6. I believe he also had a slogan similar to the "Truth, Justice and the American Way" but can't remember it.
Anyhow, here's the wiki link.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doc_Savage - RealmDown, on 08/26/2008, -4/+30Why, YOU'RE RIGHT !
From now on, I am following your advice. NO MORE GOOD DEEDS until all genocides are stopped. WHY did I not realize this before! No more charitable donations, giving blood, volunteering or being a responsible citizen until those tragedies have been solved ! STAND UP PEOPLE and LISTEN to MORGHIN! - inactive, on 08/26/2008, -1/+22"...and allot is not a word..."
Actually, it IS a word. It just doesn't mean what he thinks it means:
http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/allot
allot
Pronunciation:
ə-ˈlät
Function:
transitive verb
Inflected Form(s):
al·lot·ted; al·lot·ting
Etymology:
Middle English alotten, from Anglo-French aloter, from a- (from Latin ad-) + lot, of Germanic origin; akin to Old English hlot lot
Date:
15th century
1 : to assign as a share or portion
2 : to distribute by or as if by lot
— al·lot·ter noun - inactive, on 08/26/2008, -3/+22I love how the douchebags at USA Today left out that Shuster was a Canadian. His upbringing in Canada was a huge influence to the character he was helping to create.
- foopirata, on 08/26/2008, -0/+18Joseph Quetzalcoatlenberg, is that you? I was sure we had lost you!
- OTRtwist, on 08/26/2008, -1/+19Fun fact: Superman helped to bring the KKK down a notch
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stetson_Kennedy
HE IS REAL - Bhatch514, on 08/26/2008, -2/+19Joe Shuster was born July 10, 1914 in Canada, his family moved to Cleveland Ohio when he was ten. His childhood in Canada was a huge influence on the creation.
- MrFurious2k, on 08/26/2008, -1/+18It's amazing how some creators will generate something like Superman, only to die in relative anonymity (or poverty) while their creations live on to become world famous.
- inactive, on 08/26/2008, -0/+17Hey man... try being part Irish Jew. It's just me and my sister left.
- Paigewithlove, on 08/26/2008, -0/+15Do you ever remember watching the Canadaian Heritage commerical w/ superman in it? I thought of it the moment I read this article.
- Mootabolife, on 08/26/2008, -2/+17Tesla anyone?
- inactive, on 08/26/2008, -0/+14What an amazing and inspirational story. The origins of comic-book heroes always seem to carry a tremendous legacy.
Not that I know anything about the industry, but I'm guessing that the artists that create these characters nowadays get much better legal advice prior to selling the rights.
Probably the best thing I've read on Digg for a while. - Zippo, on 08/26/2008, -0/+13Don't forget that Shuster, Superman's original artist, was Canadian-born.
In essence, Superman is a symbol of unity between our two nations... one of freedom, justice, and tight spandex. - Mr.Gone, on 08/26/2008, -3/+15Spider-Man was actually bitten by a irradiated tub of rich creamery butter.
- De4thStr1ke, on 08/26/2008, -0/+11Wow, very interesting stuff. That part about Luther really blew me away, and I'm glad to see that the creators are finally getting their story told and getting the recognition and full credit they deserve.
- Nicksname1, on 08/26/2008, -4/+15The real tragedy is:
"A fortune sold for $130" - Frozo, on 08/26/2008, -2/+13The REAL crime that created Superman!
- n0t0kayipr0mis3, on 08/26/2008, -0/+10Why can't you be more like your brother Cincinnati, at least he calls once in a while.
- inactive, on 08/26/2008, -0/+10In 1930 a book called Gladiator was published, written by Philip Wylie. The main character had steel hard skin, super strength, and the ability to leap long distances at a single bound. These were the exact powers of the original Superman character, and it has long been held that it was the "inspiration" for Superman. I think I feel "inspired" to write a story about a high school student who gets bitten by a radioactive spider and gains the ability to spin webs and cling to walls. I will call him.... Arachna-man!
- coyote1284, on 08/26/2008, -0/+10So you're a Heinz 57 American Mutt, like most of us! XD
- JayceMJ, on 08/26/2008, -0/+10What's so bad about that? Just makes them even more American. When did America become so introverted?
- specialK16, on 08/26/2008, -0/+9And what is the deal with conspiracies?
- nlight23, on 08/26/2008, -0/+9Jewpanese?
- inactive, on 08/26/2008, -1/+10I'm imagining a bunch of accountants with slightly different skin tones
- GravyTrain6, on 08/26/2008, -3/+12In comparison to what Superman is worth now...20k is like picking up a nickel on a sidewalk....and allot is not a word...have you ever seen allittle?
- Maytel, on 08/26/2008, -1/+10so do the Japanese, it's an international thing.
People like to masturbate in general. - yor1001, on 08/26/2008, -0/+8Or a Japanese Jew....Its only me that left...
- fajitamelt, on 08/26/2008, -1/+9Is it a coincidence that:
Jerry Seinfeld and Jerry Siegel are both Jewish,
Jerry Seinfeld's name sounds amazingly like Jerry Siegel's name,
and Jerry Seinfeld's favorite superhero is Superman, which was created by Jerry Siegel?
I smell a conspiracy. - monsieurginger, on 08/26/2008, -0/+7Or Italian, Tunisian, French, Spanish, German, Hungarian, Russian, American Jew like myself and my brother.
- RobotBuddha, on 08/26/2008, -2/+9The difference is that none of us 'could' stop a genocide, while superman can. That said, you know whoever started the war is going to have kryptonite.
- jayzDigga, on 08/26/2008, -4/+11If you only had a football team in Cleveland.
- M724, on 08/26/2008, -1/+8Behind every great fiction is a very real and significant event, at least to the person who created it.
- Romanito, on 08/26/2008, -0/+7You're right. Superman would have been so much better if he had been created by a Cheyenne.
- Romanito, on 08/26/2008, -0/+7Yeah, 20k for life... 40 years later.
- saisumimen, on 08/26/2008, -0/+6I thought I was the only one!
Do you have a black yarmulke in Jew-jitsu like I do? ;p - MasterTroll, on 08/26/2008, -0/+6Or African Jew :'(
- Paigewithlove, on 08/26/2008, -0/+6It's true!
"This is what Joe Shuster had to say on visually creating Metropolis.
"Cleveland was not nearly as metropolitan as Toronto was, and it was not as big or as beautiful. Whatever buildings I saw in Toronto remained in my mind and came out in the form of Metropolis... As I realized later on, Toronto is a much more beautiful city than Cleveland ever was... I guess I don't have to worry about saying that now."
That's right. Metropolis, so often identified with New York, was originally modelled after Toronto."
http://www.supermanhomepage.com/comics/comics.php? ... - inactive, on 08/26/2008, -0/+5Well, it is true that last survivors of the planet Krypton are a dime a dozen these days.
- EndouOuto, on 08/26/2008, -1/+6Let the other countries get their own superhero. Those
bastards are always mooching off us. - inactive, on 08/26/2008, -1/+6I sure do - and that's what came to my mind as well.
Here it is for those who haven't seen it:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D9GYWbhBoHM&eurl=ht ...
It's just another item in the long list of things Americans have stolen from us Canadians... basketball anyone?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xzsbZ3oem3Y&feature ... - dialectical, on 08/26/2008, -0/+5OK, I am going to ignore the Jewey BS in your comment and give you the benefit of the doubt that you weren't be a dick. That said, there is an important point here. Although most young Americans associate Superman with a Christ like figure, the original Superman story has more roots in Judaism and as symbol for Moses. Some examples:
1) Superman is "saved" by his parents by putting him in a craft and jettisoning him to a safe land. In comparison, Moses as an infant was put in a cradle and sent down a river to secure him from Egyptian persecution.
2) On the same line Moses was hidden for 3 months out of fear of an Egyptian law that would kill all Hebrew newborns. Clark Kent is hidden by the Kent's out of fear of the persecution by the world of their new found alien newborn.
3) Moses as a Man, leads his people away from tyranny and hedonism and shows them the true "way" through the Ten Commandments. Superman symbolizes and leads America (originally only America, no the world) to Truth, Justice and the American way.
4) Moses has God blessed powers that he utilizes against the tyrannical Egyptians while Superman
I could go on but the point is that the book that Meltzer is righting is a great little insight into two young vulnerable boys who were not only talking about there own personal insights but taking from stories that they new were inspirational to themselves and others as well.
Good stuff.
dial - inactive, on 08/26/2008, -0/+5You just reminded me of a line from The Dark Knight:
Lucius Fox: Let me get this straight: You think that your client, one of the wealthiest, most powerful men in the world, is secretly a vigilante who spends his nights beating criminals to a pulp with his bare hands. And your plan is to blackmail this person? Good luck. - tewstep, on 08/26/2008, -0/+5Never really knew the details about the creators of Superman. Excellent piece.
- HanSolo69, on 08/26/2008, -0/+5There aren't too many new characters being developed in mainstream comics these days. There are however a number of publishing houses for creator owned work where the creators retain all the rights to their characters. But it's not like somebody is coming up with a new X-Men or Superman every day or year or every 10 years.
