- AbsurdParadox, on 11/08/2008, -22/+287I want to grow up and be free from the invasion of government into my life.
- Tiak, on 11/08/2008, -6/+247Unless they happen to be gay, non-Christian, or Arab.
- inactive, on 11/08/2008, -11/+239Yeah but an american friend of mine made a great point about this.
Context is everything.
In the US, Barrack is black. Being not white is just as significant as being black in the US, especially for a US president.
It's not like having a "completely black" president, but there's an opened door where there was a wall now. - sgtbutterscotch, on 11/08/2008, -88/+307Anyone else think it's funny (and convenient) how everyone is ignoring the fact that Barack is biracial? I honestly think that a half-white half-black kid typically would have looked upon certain feats, such as winning the presidency or getting a white collar job, quite differently than your typical black kid. I'm just saying that I think it's ridiculous that black parents supposedly could not tell their kids they could become whatever they wanted before Obama was elected. If that's the case, maybe they should still hold their words because no 100% black person has ever been elected to be President.
- vinceenzo, on 11/07/2008, -52/+211Finally, I can stop lying to my children. :)
- twiztidsinz, on 11/08/2008, -4/+161In the US, having mixed race parents can actually be worse.
Some would hate him just because of the color of his skin (black) and others who are black would hate him because he's not black enough. - DarkProd, on 11/08/2008, -4/+141I want to be Captain Kirk.
- funkytommyman, on 11/08/2008, -5/+91I want to get laid
- Kypt, on 11/08/2008, -5/+75Yup, turning a bit nerd in this conversation but it's similar how half-elves are mistrusted in most dnd campaigns by both camps. Half-elves to men, half-men to elves...
- JoeBaynham, on 11/08/2008, -6/+72Not if you are a hockey mom from Alaska.
- shenaniJen, on 11/08/2008, -2/+60Good luck with that.
- uncltim, on 11/08/2008, -1/+58Gay Arab Shinto(ists?)
I will always despise them!! - samard2002, on 11/08/2008, -1/+58What does 100% black mean? Black is not a race. Black is a color. If that sounds too simple, it's because it is. Simple minds use simple rationales like "he is black" to discriminate.
Ask yourself this: where would Barack fall in the major race-based events of our country. If he were born in the American south during the 1800's, would he have been a slave? Or a slave owner? After the Civil War, would he have been able to vote? Or would he have been subjected to Jim Crow laws? In the 50's, would he have been able to drink from white water fountains and attend white schools?
Barack Obama is black. - IAmTheGuy, on 11/08/2008, -4/+60Go to court and get your name changed. It's not too difficult.
- Murdats, on 11/08/2008, -2/+56generally being black is more about skin colour then ancestry. unless you want to be prejudice about someones ancestry.
- jba68, on 11/08/2008, -5/+56Enough with the hey look this time the blacks can win. Its a tired act. I voted for Obama, because I thought he was the better candidate, not because he was black
/FFS - lead2thehead, on 11/08/2008, -15/+64The best part about this is that now, when I fail at something, I can say "the black man is keeping me down".
- theremixtrack, on 11/08/2008, -39/+78I get it because they are black and so is our new president.
- inactive, on 11/08/2008, -1/+39Thinking a man is waiting outside your door to kill you has the same result as having a man who is waiting outside your door to kill you: you stay home.
Maybe there wasn't a wall, maybe Obama made the wall fall.
But I honestly doubted that America was ready to elect a black president. I was even expecting a last minute win by McCain purely for that reason. - dikaiosyne, on 11/08/2008, -1/+39Same reason why Tiger Woods is identified as Black and not Asian (25% Chinese, 25% Thai)...Tiger is 25% Black.
- rotundo, on 11/08/2008, -7/+42Not to ignore the importance of perception, but it's not like this "grow up to become anything you want" thing just became true this month. In fact, it has been true at least since 1961 (the year Obama was born). It's just that we didn't know it.
I would guess that there are a lot of things that are possible right now that we don't do simply because we're afraid. Somewhere, the first lesbian president is being raised and told "this bigoted country will never accept you".
In the end, it's probably best to just ignore the naysayers and do your best. You never know what you might discover to be possible. - Foenetik, on 11/08/2008, -6/+41this cartoon ***** sucks. ugh.
- terracottapai, on 11/08/2008, -17/+51Unless you're gay.
Or not a Christian.
Otherwise, you're good.
Oh, and having a uterus knocks you down just a couple of points, like 80 or 90ish. - Niubai, on 11/08/2008, -5/+39You guys are so obsessed with races, colors. WTF his skin color has to do with something ? If the guy does the right things, doesn't matter if he's black, white, brown, yellow, orange, blue, jew, muslim, latin, homosexual, alien, or whatever.
- pyrotix, on 11/08/2008, -4/+38keep up the Santa thing for a little longer at least
- dman24752, on 11/08/2008, -9/+43Or women...
- NyteStarNyne, on 11/08/2008, -2/+33What I think is funny was that he was black when he didn't make it yet, but now that he has I'm hearing more and more that he's biracial. Hell, if he's a successful President, I expect people to start saying "It's his white side".
- Tikkimann, on 11/08/2008, -1/+30You seem rather intent on this. You're never going to give this up, are you?
- sundevilmike, on 11/08/2008, -8/+36Not going to happen. Especially now.
- Muss, on 11/08/2008, -4/+30Why is it any different now than before?
- Divals, on 11/08/2008, -3/+28It's still impossible for any non-Christian to be president.
- inactive, on 11/08/2008, -2/+26How do you know the cartoons aren't biracial?
- archer104, on 11/08/2008, -1/+25"When I grow up I want to be a principal, or a caterpillar."
-Ralph Wiggum - megapeg, on 11/08/2008, -1/+25There aren't too many black people in the US who are of purely African ancestry. The vast majority bear at least 25% European heritage.
- MarvelZombie, on 11/08/2008, -6/+29You needed Obama to believe it was true?
- inactive, on 11/08/2008, -6/+27This is the worst cartoon!
- evilesttoast, on 11/08/2008, -4/+24We're en route to a larger government, so have fun with that.
- pilot3033, on 11/08/2008, -9/+289bpm9: "act" black, "act" white? I act human. We all act human. Good job playing into stereotypes about how people "should act."
- inactive, on 11/08/2008, -9/+28Well it clearly was true before because otherwise Obama would never have become President.
Secondly, this is still not true for latinos, atheists, homosexuals, Asians, Jews, Muslims, and a whole litany of other classes of people. So we still have a long way to go. - tamborineman, on 11/08/2008, -12/+30Well maybe not you Sally, but Billy here finally can.
- Murdats, on 11/08/2008, -0/+17thank you for proving twiztidsinz point
- rotundo, on 11/08/2008, -1/+18Seriously, do we have to wait for someone else to do something before we know we can do it ourselves? Good thing Obama didn't feel that way.
- dicer999, on 11/08/2008, -0/+17I want to have a job.
- pintomp3, on 11/08/2008, -4/+21throughout most of america's history being the better candidate wouldn't have been enough if you were black.
- jnuffnuffnomnom, on 11/08/2008, -0/+17I want to believe this large packet of Quavers crisps is better for me because it says '25% less salt'
- CertifiedBaller, on 11/08/2008, -13/+30That cartoon is stupid. Everyone has had opportunity in this country for years regardless of race. The problem is most people are lazy and become dependent on ***** entitlement programs. **cough** redistribution of wealth.
- Autodidaddict, on 11/08/2008, -7/+24I'm really disappointed at all the media coverage since Tuesday focusing 95% of the Obama election on race. Obama tried to make race a non-issue throughout his campaign, it was only when it was forced into the spotlight (Reverend Wright) that he had to address it. And Obama handled that situation perfectly.
But seriously, it's very nice to see a minority in the White House for the first time in 232 years, but Obama did not get elected because he was Black. His election isn't a demonstration of affirmative action. He was elected because he was the best candidate. Sure, over 90% of African Americans voted for him, but the vast majority would have voted for the democratic candidate anyways.
More than just focusing on race, I wish the media would cover his policies, his appointments, his transition into the white house, his plans for the country. Instead, all the newspapers and tv outlets are only doing stories on reactions of civil rights leaders, and interviews with other African American people, and so on.
Like I said, the fact a minority is now president is a huge deal. But it's not the only, or even the main reason he was elected. -
