- Evoguy, on 10/12/2007, -18/+863D comp shots were done really well, great tracking, pretty good lighting on the models. Not sure what level of realism he was going for, but the creatures are lacking a bit in shading, they would fit in the environment more convincingly with some detail texturing, bump mapping, and some environment mapping in the eyes.
Animation work was excellent though, as well as the steadi and crane cam shots. When trying to light a model to appear outside like that, sometimes it helps to render a global illumination pass sourcing a lightmap you generate from some real location pictures to get a good seamless fit (sunlight is hard to match). A good way to do this is to take a picture of a reflective sphere and mat sphere while filming as reference for specular and diffuse lighting conditions, since it's really hard to fake later. - marm0t, on 10/12/2007, -9/+73This is the Internet!
Girlfriends don't exist here, you should know this by now. - greenbox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+59youtube link (and yes it's just copy and paste from digg title)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7kpL0XTTYjA - ruprecht, on 10/12/2007, -3/+40What's amazing is that the teenager was able to afford licenses for all that expensive software.
- GregoryHarbin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+28Yeah, he pirated Blender. What a hax0r.
- Stonedonkey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+29He had two years to get proper hosting, too :p
What I can't figure out is why people keep digging this if they can't see the vid. What if ain't good? (no offense to the guy). - sjm20k, on 10/12/2007, -9/+36I know this guy! He went to HS with my girlfriend :)
- mikebeauchamp, on 10/12/2007, -14/+39Wow.. great use of every hollywood cliche camera shot.
3 minutes of someone mowing their lawn.. another 2 minutes to get to the stupid punchline.. then a few more minutes for the credits. - Warnke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24That took two years? Wow.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23who buys software these days
- SpanishBrowne, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21just because it's only got 49 diggs doesn't mean theres not 3000 people trying to view the page....
- ers35, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21I'm really confused here. That probably was hard to make, but I don't understand why this is so amazing compared to some of the other stuff out there. Maybe someone more knowledgeable in this field can enlighten us?
- AlanKc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18I got through just now.. but its taking a very long time to get the video...
There is the youtube link posted below.... but, I think I want his quicktime version to see how well it was made. The title of the story does say "Amazing"... - shiftless, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18Eh? Better has been done with less. I don't see why all of that software needed to be used at all.
- foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19http://duggmirror.com
Direct Link.
I think it works. Might not.

Isnt loading currently. The movie that is - 501337, on 10/12/2007, -8/+25Great. A 5 minute video with a 3 minutes of opening credits and 1 minute of closing credits.
I will give credit to the stellar acting though. - fatcat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15those animals look like they are from spore
- cdawzrd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15You can get software for free... but a glidecam and a GL2? That ***** is EXPENSIVE
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17i fail to see the amazing...
- majoogybobber, on 10/12/2007, -9/+22Disappointing. Only thing that made it remotely interesting was the animated creature, which just stood there the whole time. And the lawnmowing guy looks like a bag of ass.
- jdb252, on 10/12/2007, -6/+18The proper terminology is "*****".
- butchog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Good Job! I only wish that I can get my hands on some of the equipment he was runnin....
- sjm20k, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10recalling harsh memories dnthomps? ;)
- willis77, on 10/12/2007, -7/+16cliche music, cliche series of credits, boring story, lame.
cute critters, though. - GregoryHarbin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11For Blender, that's really good. I've never used such an inpenitrable GUI. Props majorly. Obviously there's some kinks to be worked out for his next project, and I hate that it took two years, but it'll look pretty good on a demo reel.
- soogy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Yeah, I just saw your movie, and I think I speak for us all when I say: what the ***** was that?
- GregoryHarbin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@jez
That was my point, buddy.
I've been using Blender for years. - Duositex, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Ahh I met this guy in Boston this summer at SIGGRAPH 06. Talented guy. He also presented at the Blender Conference in October. It took him 2 years to do this in between everything else in life and other projects... its not like he sat in a dimly lit room behind a computer screen for 730 days straight.
- SourWorm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Just because someone posts a stupid comment doesn't mean they are in fact stupid ... but you never really know.
- headzoo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I'm concerned that somewhere in the world right now, there is a white guy mowing his lawn, while listening to that song on his iPod. Scary thought.
- koonchu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7How could his site not survive dreamhost's 2TB of bandwidth?
What could have spared him from the DIGG effect? Why doesn't someone post a good article that helps people with downloadable video avoid this fate? - JimmyDushku, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5And to think, he's never going to get those "little less than 2 years" days back.
- tagliare, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Short answer: It's not.
Long answer: Motion tracking 3d models, use of Blender (OSS with terrible interface), he's a teenager - mightytightywty, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I want my 5 minutes back!
- matija, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4he should try out for the 'on the lot' competition for spielberg's new show:
http://films.thelot.com/films/595 - berfmurret, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5'advanced animation'... pretty vague. i didnt expect THAT though. pretty bland movie. not amazing either. WHAT IS WITH THESE LAME ADJECTIVES PEOPLE!! >:O
- rbvmusic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Schools these days are getting pretty good money.
For example my school has about 10 G5s all with FCP, a glidecam, a six grand steadycam, three Panasonic DVX-100s and a Sony HDR-FX1 and a couple of light kits. I swear I love my school's equipment. - OandA, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5yeah i don't get it. not that great to me. that equipment better used by someone else.
- timmay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@cdawzrd
i have a gl2 and im a teenager its called a job :)
oh wait thats how he got the idea for this movie... mowing all thoughs lawns to get his gl2 - AlanKc, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8Gotta love the first gen ipod..
- milarepa, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9that guy has a bright future.
- rexCo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6A whole lot of build up for a lame joke.
- ronin2040, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3-_-
Try defragging, surely that will fix it. - GregoryHarbin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You can create crap in any 3D program. Trust me, I have.
- Stonedonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"There is the youtube link posted below...."
Yeah, I punked myself there :p
In other news, that little film is pretty cool! - socbret, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It makes me wonder if his Dad or someone he knew well was a stedicam operator. I can understand the camera equipment and softwear since I have basically the same setup as him, but I definitly couldn't afford the stedicam or have the access(even with being in a film program) to be trained with one to the level he seems to be. He did a great job though.
- bbqplate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3i know nothing so heres my question, how difficult is this to do if your a teenager? and how long would something like this take if your the 'average' person enrolled in a arts college and animation is your major?
- bugninja, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What makes people think he pirated anything? I have friends who went to film school and their rich parents bought them every video editing tool and high-end camera they asked for. Plus, it looks like he lives in a pretty nice place and has enough money to rent some kind of crane.
- xyqxyq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2lol, apple *****
