Sometimes It Doesn't Pay to Have Good Eyesight [COMIC]
pbfcomics.com — The latest strip from the Perry Bible Fellowship, a newspaper comic strip and webcomic by Nicholas Gurewitch. It's exaggerated and isn't something that would happen in real life, although you never know. There's an underlying theme of how our bodies are regulated by what medical science (and doctors) determine to be right.
- 3647 diggs
- digg it
- ulmedas, on 02/29/2008, -128/+74Really? A comic strip is is exaggerated and would not happen in really life? Thanks for the insight.
- OneLess, on 02/29/2008, -24/+58You've criticize PBF and now must be burned at the stake. Prepare to meet your doom, heretic.
- blindmonkey, on 02/29/2008, -2/+61I think he was criticizing the description, not the comic.
- Zalyster, on 02/29/2008, -3/+8He was.
Though as an aside, I hope we don't start seeing PBF comics on the front page like we do XKCD... - fef560, on 03/01/2008, -1/+1Seriously, don't ruin a good thing
- Zalyster, on 02/29/2008, -3/+8He was.
- rabiddachshund, on 03/01/2008, -2/+1Should I digg him for using the word heretic or bury him for bad grammar? I choose both, and therefore cannot do either.
- OneLess, on 03/01/2008, -1/+1Why did I get dugg up 32 times when I totally misread the comment I was responding to?
- Solis, on 03/03/2008, -0/+1Because people probably thought the same thing you did when they first saw the comic. Idiot.
- ulmedas, on 03/01/2008, -0/+1I quite enjoy PBF, and I am giddy every time a new strip is added. I was being snarky about over analytic description. Though I suppose I was a bit harsh and my comment superfluous.
My sincerest apologies for contributing to the level of vitriol on the internet. I shall refrain in the future. (No sarcasm intended, btw)
- blindmonkey, on 02/29/2008, -2/+61I think he was criticizing the description, not the comic.
- Rockmaninoff, on 02/29/2008, -11/+5Really? Really?
- MrNexus, on 02/29/2008, -13/+4So you're basically saying you have no sense of humor.
- ulmedas, on 03/01/2008, -0/+1Honestly, I thought the comic strip quite funny, if not a little disturbing, as most PBF strips are. I certainly meant no disrespect towards PBF. My comments was an unnecessarily harsh commentary on the description above.
- andreeee, on 02/29/2008, -16/+2Just thought that you should know that i logged in just do digg you downnn.
- ulmedas, on 03/01/2008, -0/+1Thanks for letting me know
:)
- ulmedas, on 03/01/2008, -0/+1Thanks for letting me know
- Klarth, on 02/29/2008, -3/+51Christ, people, he's not criticising the comic - he's ragging on the ***** description attached to the submission.
- Zybergod, on 02/29/2008, -13/+2You sir, are an *****.
GOOD DAY! - provost, on 02/29/2008, -2/+7and next up.. we will over analyze the one where garfield eats jon's lasagna and isnt supposed to. Perhaps.... a statement about all of us gorging at the consumerist trough that is placed before us?
stay tuned... - briancore, on 03/01/2008, -1/+6is everyone really being this dumb? i mean hes not even making fun of the comic you guys, hes making fun of the description on digg...
- OneLess, on 02/29/2008, -24/+58You've criticize PBF and now must be burned at the stake. Prepare to meet your doom, heretic.
- Philbert, on 02/29/2008, -97/+6Without my glasses the E looks like a blurry rectangle. No one even suggested surgery to me or my parents (aside from lasik recently), they just gave be glasses and I could see fine.
- kenyan, on 02/29/2008, -5/+37Ahem, so we've found the type of person that warranted the stupid description. Here's a tip... read for meaning.
- Alegoo92, on 02/29/2008, -2/+4Most people can pick up on the hyperbole of the comic, but do keep in mind the image isn't scale.. and the E would have been as big as his face.
- QueEsAmor, on 02/29/2008, -3/+21But see, your story would make a ***** comic.
- Philbert, on 03/01/2008, -3/+1I personally don't know why I got dugg down so much. They thought the kid had bad eyesight so they automatically say "surgery!". What sense does that make? If they suggested glasses or contacts the comic would bee funny.
- samgab, on 03/01/2008, -0/+1Goodnight nurse.
- Solis, on 03/03/2008, -1/+1Why does it need to make sense? Are you new to comedy?
- mastermagician, on 02/29/2008, -14/+282Jesus, Since when did we start to seriously consider the validity and reality of comics? Just look at it for what it is.
- floppyparty, on 02/29/2008, -6/+48A 404 error....
- Yazoo, on 02/29/2008, -1/+6Aww, we brokesd the Perry Bible Fellowship :(
- Philbert, on 03/01/2008, -3/+1Sounds more entertaining than the strip.
- mwalker05, on 02/29/2008, -27/+5when you submit a comic that is horrendously unfunny to digg, expect it to be dissected.
- kenyan, on 02/29/2008, -0/+8When one does come by, I'll keep that in mind, but why do you think the xkcd comics don't need a description? It's because you need to think for yourself.
- karenflower, on 02/29/2008, -0/+1Indeed.
- fef560, on 03/01/2008, -0/+1***** I accidentally gave you one up
- kenyan, on 02/29/2008, -0/+8When one does come by, I'll keep that in mind, but why do you think the xkcd comics don't need a description? It's because you need to think for yourself.
- jdpalite, on 02/29/2008, -1/+6What is art if not social commentary?
- EpicSelekta, on 03/01/2008, -1/+5Entertainment.
- Dsly, on 03/01/2008, -2/+3Well, I think it's good of you to ask Jesus this question. I happen to be a good friend of the guy's and he said, quite simply
"People are ***** idiots. They nailed me to a piece of wood, I hope they all die, the bastards."
He's a little bitter still
- floppyparty, on 02/29/2008, -6/+48A 404 error....
- orlando37, on 02/29/2008, -20/+4You mean doctors can overreact to things. Naw, never.
- minnymoo, on 02/29/2008, -1/+1/sarcasm*
- bsegovia, on 02/29/2008, -5/+109hahaha i love the Perry Bible Fellowship.. so twisted.
- mille716, on 02/29/2008, -5/+4I love this comic too!
- From guy with digg icon picture of a PBF character - FatLoser, on 03/01/2008, -2/+3What's more twisted, PBF or the fact that I caught my roommate masturbating to a Newsweek magazine and "accidentally" ejaculating on my kitten?
- iruel, on 03/01/2008, -0/+3you have made a critical error in your choice of roommate.
- diggimator, on 03/01/2008, -0/+1Is that code word for something?
- mille716, on 02/29/2008, -5/+4I love this comic too!
- jeremyduffy, on 02/29/2008, -28/+16To me, this is a sad commentary on how parents fail to protect their children because they don't bother to get a second or third opinion before agreeing to put their kids through a procedure or put on some kind of drugs.
- drachemorder, on 02/29/2008, -5/+9Why is this comment being buried? I find it quite insightful. Parents should always consider carefully what they're being asked to do and make decisions based on the best information they can get. Why would anyone disagree with that?
- notahippie76, on 02/29/2008, -12/+1Because that's not what the comic is about. In the comic, the child has such good eyesight that he sees the little, tiny bee (the insect). As a result, the government wants to perform tests on this child to see what makes his eyes so good. It's absurd humor, and it has nothing to do with laser eye surgery.
- bdkneram, on 02/29/2008, -3/+2Wow, you are quite stupid. Please don't ever have children.
- notahippie76, on 03/01/2008, -2/+4Wait, so I misinterpret one webcomic (I see now that I was wrong) and I'm suddenly off the procreation list? I have a question for you, do you make these judgments all the time, or just when you're talking about something as dense and all-important as an interpretation of The Perry Bible Fellowship?
By the way, I maintain that my original (incorrect) interpretation would be funnier and more in line with the tone of PBF.
- notahippie76, on 03/01/2008, -2/+4Wait, so I misinterpret one webcomic (I see now that I was wrong) and I'm suddenly off the procreation list? - bdkneram, on 02/29/2008, -3/+2Wow, you are quite stupid. Please don't ever have children.
- Alegoo92, on 02/29/2008, -0/+5A) Because this is a humor comic, not commentary.
B) Because they do. Mom's in particular seek hundreds of opinions when an issue arises. Doctors, friends, family...- jeremyduffy, on 03/03/2008, -0/+1B) Ummm sure. That's why so many kids are on Ritilin:
"I know of children who have been given Ritalin more to subdue them than to meet their needs -- a practice that recalls the opium syrups used to soothe noisy infants in London a century ago."

- halobender, on 02/29/2008, -0/+210 opinions are best. Good for the economy and hopefully (likely) they will all contradict each other.
- hiro, on 02/29/2008, -9/+2To me, this is a ***** comic.
- chubbstar, on 02/29/2008, -2/+1to me, you are a *****.
aw that was harsh.
to me you are a doodie. - fef560, on 03/01/2008, -0/+1go get *****

- MCCULLAH, on 02/29/2008, -42/+5that would never happen ever! the doctor would see the bee! AND WHY WAS IT SO SMALL!! OMG these comics are sick and degrading omg!

- insanebrain, on 02/29/2008, -7/+2***** brilliant !!
- leerayIG88, on 02/29/2008, -0/+5Seriously, I want someone to give me a mirror so i can see the comic.
- duality, on 02/29/2008, -0/+10ikcilabd, you wasted that joke on the one person guaranteed not to get it.
- FatLoser, on 03/01/2008, -4/+1using your logic, please explain to me how that one person dugg his comment 47 times?
- duality, on 03/01/2008, -1/+1Perhaps you should try asking a different question that (1) makes more sense, and (2) is more characteristic of the actual issue. It's important to realize that when you reply to a comment, the author of that comment is the one for whom your reply is intended. People who digg and bury comments are much less important; they're just spectators, and they are no different than fans at a sporting event that can be seen cheering or jeering for the people actually on the field.
I'm not saying that it was humorless; I'm only saying that it was tasteless. If you're going to crack fun at someone else's expense just because they asked for help, then the polite thing to do is to accompany it with the requested help, such as this URL that I saw posted further down in the article's comments: http://i32.tinypic.com/6pnam9.jpg .
As a personal rule, I will digg or bury a comment, or I will reply to it, but I will never do both. I find it puts things in better perspective for me. - FatLoser, on 03/01/2008, -0/+1The point I was trying to make is that the joke was not "wasted" at all. 47 people clearly found humor in it. If this was a personal message that nobody else got to see, then yes, it would have been wasted.
- duality, on 03/02/2008, -0/+1"If this was a personal message that nobody else got to see, then yes, it would have been wasted."
...but in this case, it was inappropriate to post it as a reply, and ikcilabd should have posted it on the top level of comments instead.

- SteveHoltAD, on 02/29/2008, -27/+9how did this make the ***** front page!?!?!?
- Cenobite, on 02/29/2008, -3/+23People dugg it. It kinda works that way.
- Narcism, on 02/29/2008, -8/+2you're right, how many times do I need to receive something forwarded by my mom to be on digg?
- mastermagician, on 02/29/2008, -2/+13Your mom is awesome then.
- Zybergod, on 02/29/2008, -1/+5Because the normal front page was full.
- Narcism, on 02/29/2008, -4/+33I love PBF, shame they only seem to update once a week or once every other week.
- ther4p1st, on 02/29/2008, -0/+4True that, but at least it's frequenting updates a little faster than last year. Felt like months between strips. Either that or I'm just extremely impatient. Whatever, Perry Bible Fellowship rocks.
- joethedouchebag, on 02/29/2008, -0/+8that's because Nicolas Gurewitch, the creator, has put the comic into semi-retirement - http://www.blorgable.com/2008/02/19/the-perry-bibl ...
- NullPolarity, on 02/29/2008, -0/+1Quality over quantity. Glad to see a worthwhile comic hitting the front page. PBF is great!
- Chahrlie5, on 02/29/2008, -0/+1Quality ideas don't just fall out of the sky, they have to come up with them.
- letsnotlisten, on 02/29/2008, -6/+20pbf comics is the *****. if you guys haven't checked out comics outside of this one you definitely should.
- Ell3, on 02/29/2008, -12/+1lol. Could serve as a visual representation of political correctness. Don't mention the elephant in the room or you'll be sent in for reprogramming.

- Cenobite, on 02/29/2008, -1/+5That's not really funny, just shock value.
- threemagic, on 02/29/2008, -1/+2As opposed to the comic which is just filled with the comedy?
- Cenobite, on 02/29/2008, -1/+3One at least makes an attempt at irony, the other is just random drawings of penises, vaginas and gruesome deaths (check out the other Electric Retard comics).
- threemagic, on 02/29/2008, -1/+2As opposed to the comic which is just filled with the comedy?

" - ghgh1313, on 02/29/2008, -11/+25i would have switched the first two frames around... otherwise the first pic looks like someone holding a gun up to a credit card, and it gives away why the kid said "bee"

- michael43, on 02/29/2008, -2/+6was too
- mrASSMAN, on 02/29/2008, -5/+29The description is taking the comic way too seriously.. it's only meant to be a sort of twisted humor. No real underlying message.
- threemagic, on 02/29/2008, -3/+6I get it.. I get the Dr. thought he was pointing at an E but the boy saw the bee.. so he said "bee".. the Dr. heard B and decided he needed surgery because no one with correct eyesight would miss the E... I get it... oh man, funny.
- lintmonkey, on 02/29/2008, -5/+1ignore me.
- Philbert, on 03/01/2008, -1/+2Sure but why would any doctor suggest surgery for poor eyesight?
- skullmountain, on 02/29/2008, -2/+7I agree about the serious caption, but there's definitely a message, whether it's intentional or not. To me it seems that a good amount of the PBF comics, although extremely exaggerated, are still a legitimate form of social commentary, don't cut the artist short.
- EricSchC1, on 02/29/2008, -6/+1this is the "Wonder Bread" of twisted humor. I've read several PBF strips and its like each one was designed to startle and provoke the likes of Captain Obvious. I definitely get it. Its just not that funny.
- xenuxenuts, on 02/29/2008, -4/+4It's obviously about a conspiracy to cover up the invasion of the Bee masters. It wasn't that he could see the Bee, it was that he noticed the Bee. The kid knew too much. You see the Bees are trying to challenge the Wasps for the control of the country. Currently the bees control the media and the medical industry. What you've seen is code for the next stage to begin: the bees will infiltrate the schools and control our children. The next stage involves FEMA camps, but I've already said too much.
- sunkist22, on 02/29/2008, -3/+3I dont know... there are a lot of parents who just throw their child on some sort of medication because they are misdiagnosed with ADHD or something similar. Because it's easier to do that then deal with the child or change their diet or even spend time with them. While this comic is a little different, it definately makes fun of how quick we are to jump into prescription drugs or surgery rather than determine the cause of a problem.
- skullmountain, on 02/29/2008, -6/+4Everyone I show the PBF site or book to gets hooked, there's no way around it (unless, maybe, you don't even have the slightest sense of humor - or if you're a racist), it's genius.
- SpectreFire, on 02/29/2008, -11/+64Oh wow. The guy who posted this is an idiot.
The comic is about how this kid , who has super vision, thought the doctor was pointing at the bee, and so hence he said bee. But the Doctor, who can't see the bee, thinks he has poor vision because he thought the kid was referring to the E when he said B. So now the kid's getting eye surgery in order to "improve" his vision, but unknown the doctors, they're only going to be ruining it.
God damn it!
Stupid stupid stupid! MakiMaki you ***** moron.- fowleryo, on 02/29/2008, -2/+5wtf is a bee doing in the optometrists office anyway??!
- CobaltBlue, on 02/29/2008, -3/+27The bee is a manifestation of the Jungian archetype of the everyman who, through various nefarious schemes, keeps the Nietzschean Ubermensch down.
- familynight, on 02/29/2008, -5/+5am i the only one who thinks makimaki was trying to be funny?
- elnerdo, on 02/29/2008, -1/+18Yes.
- TridenTBoy, on 03/01/2008, -0/+1I agree! (Exclamation marks are great)

- Dush, on 02/29/2008, -10/+5Hahah! How would eye surgery correct illiteracy? Good joke.
- SquigglyP, on 02/29/2008, -2/+14The Perry Bible Fellowship is one of the best strip comics in existence today. Period.
- antibastard, on 02/29/2008, -1/+4I disagree. Semicolon.
- SquigglyP, on 03/02/2008, -0/+1Heresy. Question Mark.
- antibastard, on 02/29/2008, -1/+4I disagree. Semicolon.
- Bease, on 02/29/2008, -8/+1I'm sorry, i wanted to laugh at this because i wanted a good optical joke, but it's just not funny to me ... it's pretty dumb. Not even a lab tech with an autorefractor would make a mistake like that... much less a real doctor.
- Philbert, on 03/01/2008, -0/+1Unless the kid is getting some kind of surgery to fix stupidity since anyone would know the doctor wants him to name the letters. Unless he's just being a smartass. In which case, maybe this comic does teach a good lesson.
- dolvlo, on 02/29/2008, -5/+5PBF is the best comic on the web. Actually, it is the best comic *anywhere*.
- antibastard, on 02/29/2008, -2/+1it used to be, but now it's qwantz.com
- BeyondGoodNEvil, on 03/01/2008, -0/+1PBF, Dinosaur comics and White Ninja are the best ones I've seen.
- antibastard, on 02/29/2008, -2/+1it used to be, but now it's qwantz.com
- mlvassallo, on 02/29/2008, -3/+53You mother ***** broke PBF. :(
- WallnutBoy, on 02/29/2008, -4/+1We 'mother *****' stand as one. Bitch.
- ahawks, on 02/29/2008, -11/+9Buried for being yet another comic strip posted to digg. Also for the retarded description. Also for breaking PBF
- FlagrantDrugUse, on 02/29/2008, -0/+2do you have some sort of aversion to comic strips? Who the ***** doesn't like comic strips?
- cmedley, on 02/29/2008, -4/+2Funniest strip in weeks. Love that laser.
- heartsblood, on 02/29/2008, -6/+4religious server vs digg.
It wasn't a very fair fight :/- heartsblood, on 02/29/2008, -0/+1http://youtube.com/watch?v=09joHeDbdYw&feature=rel ...
- EwMo, on 02/29/2008, -4/+1that's not even that funny...
- cli006, on 02/29/2008, -2/+1It's a joke poster, I don't think it was meant to be taken so seriously.
- mastermagician, on 02/29/2008, -1/+5Look at his profile. He's a college philosophy student.
- Julirocks, on 02/29/2008, -1/+0RIP PBF
- ShooterMcGavin, on 02/29/2008, -1/+3Whoops... looks like PBF has an open directory: http://www.pbfcomics.com/archive_b/
- masgaster, on 02/29/2008, -0/+6This comic unsettles me.
- EmberJGT, on 02/29/2008, -0/+5Launch the counter offensive!
- mjklaser, on 02/29/2008, -25/+7Buried - not funny or poignant - just dumbass
- fiskintl, on 02/29/2008, -2/+8sort of like your comment.
- Zihuatanejo, on 02/29/2008, -1/+4I don't think you understand what poignant means.
- mjklaser, on 02/29/2008, -3/+1I sure do understand what poignant means, Biff!
- mjklaser, on 02/29/2008, -2/+1for Biff - from Merriam-Webster - definition 2b: designed to make an impression, cutting (as in poignant satire)
Oh, you didn't know that words sometimes have more than one meaning?
So, as I said, this comic is neither funny, nor poignant - step off, Biffle!- Boor, on 02/29/2008, -1/+1So your saying because it doesn't meet one of the words definitions then it does not meet any? A word having more then one definition increases the probability that Zih is right, and doesn't decrease it as you imply.
- Zihuatanejo, on 02/29/2008, -0/+4Why don't you make like a tree and get outta here, butthead.
- mjklaser, on 03/01/2008, -2/+1"Who you callin' Butthead, Butthead?" HahAAAA - these B to the F quotes are awesome! Hey Biff - you're about as funny as a screen door on a battleship!
- mjklaser, on 02/29/2008, -2/+2Thanks Fisk - I cannot believe that it got over 700 diggs! WTF?
- kastlip88, on 03/01/2008, -1/+1Your dumbass
- mjklaser, on 03/02/2008, -0/+1No, you are a dumbass, because you don't even use proper English. Actually, you upgraded yourself to ***** - because "you" and "are" are contracted to make the word "you're", not "your" as you (the *****) have used it. Learn English, fool.
- alexkorova, on 03/01/2008, -0/+2No, just badass!
- ShainRules, on 02/29/2008, -5/+9Easily one of the best web comics on the internet.
- mexretroshore, on 02/29/2008, -8/+3The kid sees an insect
