It's hard to tell how accurate the simulation is, but it seems like I'm making decisions and seeing results. It may just mean that I'm replaying the rhythmic pattern of the game in my head.

Games can kind of have a rhythm like this. I was playing one of the Tactics Ogre games on an emulator a while back. You can train your guys by setting up two teams and letting the AI fight. I was watching this while I was washing the dishes. It looked very similar to Life.
This kind of patterning is maybe something that dreams would try to lay down in your memory. (One function of dreams is to lay down neural connections for memory. People who are deprived of sleep don't remember tasks they learn so well.)
