- SantaBJ, on 06/18/2009, -1/+643They actually *do* speak Norwegian in Hell.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hell,_Norway - CannedMango, on 06/19/2009, -3/+520How hard is it for people to understand that putting the punchline in the title ruins the joke?
- GregFD3S, on 06/18/2009, -4/+450Dugg for a funny comic!
Buried for making the punchline the ***** title! - heruan, on 06/18/2009, -4/+354Dugg for the number of things I know about Norway now.
- ohtarea, on 06/19/2009, -4/+163Why must people insist on putting the punchline in the title? <sigh>
- FOcast, on 06/19/2009, -2/+136Sheesh, whatever happened to critical thinking and reading analysis skills? This comic is NOT trying to say "Norway is prosperous because it's atheist". It's simply pointing out that the teacher's argument boils down to "America is failing because it's atheist" (which is a position many vocal fundamentalist christian people hold) and showing that this is ***** because there are atheist-majority countries that are very prosperous.
- Darkhacker, on 06/18/2009, -13/+142Comic seems inaccurate about the religion thing.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norway#Religion - glinsvad, on 06/19/2009, -0/+105It's probably based on which religion people actually practice; if any. I'm an atheist but I'm still registered as a Christian and I pay roughly 1% income tax to the Danish National Church. 'Round here, you're part of a heavily religious minority if you visit a church more than once a year (excluding funerals and weddings). It's the Homer Simpson approach to Christianity.
- Indecision77, on 06/19/2009, -5/+89The point wasn't that Norway is prosperous because of atheism. It was that atheism isn't the cause of our problems.
Yes, should be obvious, but some people believe it is. - KublaiKhan, on 06/19/2009, -17/+92Show me a society as homogeneous as Norway, and with a population as small, and with such access to natural resources, and I will show you a society that cannot help but be prosperous.
Not to detract from Norway or its people, but its prosperity is hardly as simple as "they don't believe in God." - shrudheuie, on 06/19/2009, -1/+73The point isn't that Norway is good because of Atheism or non-belief, but that non-belief does not neccessarily cause a decay of society. A lot of people seem to be mistaking the two. just thought I'd clarify.
- FreddieD, on 06/19/2009, -1/+67Star Wars Episode V: Vader is Luke's Father
- NMRgentleman, on 06/19/2009, -4/+56I know this is a joke, but... really, statisticians must fall into tears reading it. I think Norway and the US might be different in more ways than religious devotion. Vatican City probably has a pretty high peace index too, and I hear they're 100 percent Christian.
- dmanmax99, on 06/19/2009, -4/+54Protip: Punchlines in titles are lame.
- adfu, on 06/19/2009, -1/+49Hi! I'm Norwegian.
- BorsKaegel, on 06/18/2009, -10/+51No, they speak English in Hell.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hell,_Grand_Cayman - PsychoDesigns, on 06/19/2009, -4/+44AND! they make the best ***** Black Metal \m/
- mollysue111, on 06/19/2009, -17/+52***** atheists and their common sense.
- LemonMachete, on 06/19/2009, -0/+34@eramos
Some religious people think that religion is critical to the well being of a society and cannot function if it is secular. This comic merely points out that despite the fact that Norway is secular it is significantly ahead of most of the world in societal issues, particularly the United States, which prides itself on being very religious. Therefore religion is not critical to a society. - cheddaro, on 06/19/2009, -3/+36Depending on the definition of "definition", the entire world is somewhere between 1% and 2000% tyrannosaurus rex.
- vsujohn2, on 06/18/2009, -6/+37I agree with BorsKaegel, its definitely english.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hell,_Michigan - oriondr, on 06/19/2009, -0/+30Yeah, you're pretty much born into the church no matter what. It's a state church. Most Norwegians never actually go to church except on maybe Christmas or Easter, and are largely indifferent on the matter.
- StopBoringMe, on 06/19/2009, -0/+29http://dailyatheist.blogspot.com/2007/10/norway-fl ...
"Depending on the definition of atheism, Norway thus has between 26 percent and 71 percent atheists." - LiquidIse, on 06/19/2009, -2/+29The problem with most people using this argument is they try to say that Norway's various successes as a society is DUE TO their atheistic levels. When in fact all it proves is that atheism does not cause a heathen anarchy.
- m85476585, on 06/19/2009, -0/+25I hear it freezes over in the winter.
- Volath, on 06/19/2009, -0/+24Yeah you're right. When you're born in Norway you are automatically added as a member of the church. You can get out of it, but a lot of people just don't bother.
- SpareAccount, on 06/19/2009, -1/+25How are you... alive?
- Drahkir, on 06/19/2009, -1/+23To everyone using some variant of the "correlation not implying causation" argument: The comic is NOT attributing success to atheism, it is merely refuting that atheism guarantees societal decay.
- MadHarvey, on 06/19/2009, -1/+23Well I dugg him up for a few minutes, just to let him get his hopes up. Then BAM I dropped the ***** hammer...
So, while amount of Diggs is neutral, the effect is nothing less than awesome. - Slick0, on 06/19/2009, -1/+22Well, in the USA in 2004 there were roughly 33 million people that were born in another country, which equates to roughly 10.9% out of a population of 303 million. In Norway in 2007 there were 341 000 people that were born in another country, which equates to roughly 8,9% out of a population of 4 800 000, proportionally not very different, right? Out of those immigrants the largest groups came from Pakistan, Poland, Afghanistan and Somalia.
In my mind, us Norway are prosperous because we appreciate the rights of all individuals, but we also respect the need to regulate the market, save money for future generations, and care for the well-being of _all_ people. We succeed because we provide the same opportunities for everyone. Even if you have nothing, you can go to school and university ($100 tuition + books), no need for a wealthy father here. What you americans perceive as pinko-communism is infact what has gotten us this far.
For those of you that believe that oil is what allows us to do this, have a look at the following article:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Petroleum_Fund_of ... - Blajano, on 06/19/2009, -0/+19Jo, der snakker vi norsk >:D
- StopBoringMe, on 06/19/2009, -7/+24No, they certainly speak Kentuckian.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hell_for_Certain,_Ken ... - MrInfallible, on 06/19/2009, -1/+18Net debt 0. Norway lends more than it borrows.
- sodade, on 06/19/2009, -0/+17I actually have an 8yr old who lives with her mother in Oslo. When visiting this spring, my little girl told me she didn't believe in god. I was so PROUD!
- felidaeus, on 06/18/2009, -1/+17Oh, what the hell?
- InsomniacAgent, on 06/19/2009, -0/+16"What about Norway? (Comic)" would have been a much more appropriate title.
- SarcasticGenius, on 06/19/2009, -1/+16Uff da!
- asdf2000, on 06/19/2009, -3/+17that list of religions per countries only includes theism.
so, agnostic/atheist is not included - thatonekid393, on 06/19/2009, -1/+14So the effect is.....nil?
- bjorna, on 06/19/2009, -0/+13dugg for truth
- NMRgentleman, on 06/19/2009, -4/+17That's precisely the point, there are many other factors. Less populous nations, for example, are less likely to engage in military action simply because it is more difficult for them to do so.
- vishious, on 06/19/2009, -0/+12I don't think they speak Norwegian in New Jersey.
- kitsua, on 06/19/2009, -1/+13Dunno why you're being buried, that made sense. A more prosperous, peaceful and educated country is more likely to foster and grow a large atheist population.
Actually, I do know. Diggers will bury any perceived slight against atheism or slant towards religion, even though neither existed in your post. Your name is apt. - Llanowar, on 06/19/2009, -0/+12http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Church_of_Norway#Curr ...
"Norway was the least religious among the Western countries surveyed, with only 36% of the population considering themselves religious."
Just depends on the way you look at it. Many seem to be member of the church of norway for non-religious reasons. - elnerdo, on 06/19/2009, -1/+13"Although 80,7% of the Norwegian population belongs to the state church[1], only about 3% attend church services or other religious meetings more than once a month. Baptism of infants fell from 96.8% in 1960 to 73.5% in 2007, while the proportion of confirmants fell from 93% in 1960 to 67% in 2007. The proportion of weddings to be celebrated in the Church of Norway fell from 85.2% in 1960 to 44% in 2007. The proportion of funerals has remained on a high level, in 2007 93% of all funerals took place in the Church of Norway. [4][5]"
Also on wikipedia, from the article on "Church of Norway" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Church_of_Norway - BillOrly, on 06/19/2009, -2/+14666 diggs...
damn it was too good to last - scarwars, on 06/19/2009, -0/+12I've never met a martian eventhough I live on earth
- DirtyVicar, on 06/19/2009, -1/+12Frankly I think the rednecks and bible thumpers would rather kneel at Satan's altar than have any of Norway's "socialism" and high taxes.
- dty2010, on 06/19/2009, -1/+12I sure hope people don't actually believe the ***** in this comment about the comic saying atheism is responsible for Norway's prosperity.
