- Evilblobs, on 08/19/2008, -35/+247I think the proper term is "pretentious musical douchebag."
- TastyCookie, on 08/19/2008, -5/+171You don't have to be a music nerd to be driven insane by Soulja Boy.
- z0mb13, on 08/19/2008, -4/+104I'm a hipster d bag about music but I don't judge other people based on their tastes. That's just setting yourself up to be an ***** to 99% of the population.
- 10goto10, on 08/19/2008, -2/+101“There are two kinds of music. Good music, and the other kind.” - Duke Ellington
- OfNumbers, on 08/19/2008, -4/+89This guy STILL can't fit his own writing in to speech bubbles.
- Stupidumb, on 08/19/2008, -2/+81You're right, but you don't have to be pretentious to hate soulja boy.
- trpnblies7, on 08/19/2008, -11/+77What the hell is he talking about? Blues Traveler rocks. No one shreds a harmonica like John Popper.
- elhaf, on 08/19/2008, -10/+66If you end a relationship strictly on the basis of (non-shared) musical taste, you're a ***** douchebag.
- SubjectiveC, on 08/19/2008, -15/+65If you talk like that, you're not a music nerd. You're a douchebag.
- wreckosaurus, on 08/19/2008, -2/+51"Oh my god, how can they play this ***** instead of (obscure band nobody knows), people are so stupid. I don't understand how anyone can like this music. I really wish I was in charge of what was being played everywhere, people just don't know what's good."
-actual quote from an annoying pretentious friend - n8o8, on 08/19/2008, -3/+46Damn, evidently Digg's leet sensibilities don't extend to music.
- pyry, on 08/19/2008, -1/+44When I heard "music nerd" I was expecting talk of arpeggios and musical periods, and whether you should be tuning to 440Hz or 438Hz. Silly me! I guess I must not be a music nerd.
- bobbydiamondz, on 08/19/2008, -1/+40Totally. Music being popular does not exclude it from being good.
- Nicolyrezk, on 08/19/2008, -6/+41Yeah. I mean, I consider myself an expert on a few subjects, but with something like music, which is purely personal taste, comes up.. if you act like that, you're just a massive prick who deserves to have a 45 of an old Beatles song crammed up their ass.
- MaryCait, on 08/19/2008, -0/+31YOOOOOOU!
- Freshjive787, on 08/19/2008, -8/+38i guess you could consider me a music snob, but the satire in this comic doesn't seem very on point. he hates music snobs, and people who listen to music that just plays on the radio? what point is this trying to prove?
- chadisawesome, on 08/19/2008, -12/+42I'm a music snob... I like John Mayer.
- manshack, on 08/19/2008, -8/+37wow. what a tool.
- To0pak, on 08/19/2008, -1/+26the stuff with the old drummer was always better
- sindex, on 08/19/2008, -0/+22No, you're a music nerd.
That guy's a pretentious douche. - 33PercentGod, on 08/19/2008, -4/+25I am a douche. This is my burden.
Do these people smell their farts while listening to Houses of the Holy? - RetlawST, on 08/19/2008, -1/+22John Mayer was surprisingly good when I heard him do some blues (don't know where it came from, heard it at a friends house). Supposedly that was his ambition all along, but that's just me repeating what my friend told me.
- NinjaBoy, on 08/19/2008, -3/+23Wait...whats wrong with blues travelers?
- Stupidumb, on 08/19/2008, -0/+20***** *****, I hate that ***** song.
- alex7575, on 08/19/2008, -5/+24So you're saying that if I actually like "ambient music in malls" that makes me a music idiot?
If I like a song, regardless of where it came from, I may go as far as memorizing the lyrics, if you choose to "fully understand" the song, it's roots/origins, it's metaphorical meaning/critique, that's good for you. But that doesn't invalidate that some ***** music will be considered as "good" music to some.
The reason I don't care about "connoisseurs" is because they usually try to "push" their point of view as the "correct" view, even when it comes to art, which is an abstract form of communication, highly dependent on one's point of view. - DemonWasp, on 08/19/2008, -0/+18I hate him just for his name, having never been exposed to his music.
- CosmosCR, on 08/19/2008, -3/+19The problem with music snobs is they are all convinced that their taste is good taste.
- MasterGrief, on 08/19/2008, -0/+16You have no idea just how lucky you are.
- trevah, on 08/19/2008, -3/+19Seriously! What a douche. "Four" is a ***** fantastic album. Damn music nazis...
- glinsvad, on 08/19/2008, -16/+31I prefer to think of myself as a music connoisseur. Besides that, the comic is spot on - ambient music in malls and restaurants is often worse that the smell of raw sewage.
- CapeKid, on 08/19/2008, -0/+14Most of the time that quote ends with "I like both."
- jsauter, on 08/19/2008, -1/+15I don't know about that... Envisioning a lifelong relationship with someone that listens only to country music makes me kind of twitchy.
- DevilsLeftHand, on 08/19/2008, -0/+13Based upon all of the comments thus far, I've noticed two indisputable truths:
1. Musical taste is subjective, and when you act like it's not, you're a douchebag, and
2. Even knowing that musical taste is subjective, Soulja Boy is still universally accepted as crap
I think we're all on the same page here. - elhaf, on 08/19/2008, -2/+15Exactly. You can't be "right" about an opinion, no matter how hard you work at it.
- SeligErasmus, on 08/19/2008, -1/+14The author of this comic is a douche, no doubt, but the icing on the cake is that he's the worst kind of douche - a wannabe. I encounter his kind all the time around the local college campuses - they want to dazzle you with their quizbowl-level knowledge of random factoids about a band, swap random indie band names and then bask in the warm neon glow of their hipster ego.
If you really want to have fun with these kinds of douches, make up a band name and ask if they've heard of them. Bonus points if you can get them to lie about owning their album or seeing them live. I went to a party at an arts college and had a girl trying to lord her superior admiration for the legendary live act "Asbestos Milkshake" (a name I'd made up earlier in the conversation.) After all, she had seen them in '94, before they sold out to the maaaaan, back when they were underground!
In my mind, the REAL music nerds are the ones who can find something they like in all music - be it production value, melody, lyrics or whatever. Not all music is meant to be some grand symphony or a 3 minute pop single - take it on case-by-case basis for what the original intent was.
The other point is the hording/elitism angle - this outlook of "Oh, they're popular - now I can't like them." or "You only like their latest album, you're an uncircumcised Philistine" is ***** retarded; good music shouldn't be some exclusive club that requires a secret handshake to get into. The world needs more great music, and I embrace every opportunity available to spread good music to people who haven't heard it - whether it's an Apple commercial, a film soundtrack, or a random conversation - one medium is not intrinsically better than another.
***** this guy and his wannabe elitism. - Azdak, on 08/19/2008, -1/+14buried for trying to disguise complete and utter pretentiousness as "humor"
- sandiegodude, on 08/19/2008, -7/+19Haha, I've gone from instant "OMG this chick ROCKS!" to "OMG get me out of her ***** CAR!!!" when she popped on Billy Ray Syrus and started singing along. That was the longest beer run ride I've ever had in my life...
- phillykid162, on 08/19/2008, -4/+16What's with all the John Mayer hate? Listen to his live album with Pino Palladino and Steve Jordan, both of whom are veteran musicians and wouldn't play with Mayer if he were as horrible as people say. At the end of the day I'm an even bigger fan of John Mayer for introducing me to great artists such as SRV, BB King, Buddy Guy....
Music elitism sucks... - Stupidumb, on 08/19/2008, -1/+12you like them too?
- coheedcollapse, on 08/19/2008, -2/+13People who don't like John Mayer because "his music is crap" are the type of people who will say "x is my favorite band!" and as soon as it hits the radio they hate them. He played live at the Conan in Chicago show and I'm sorry, but that man has talent. If you can't admit that, you're either deaf or a pretentious prick.
- mrinsanity, on 08/19/2008, -0/+10people like that need to grow up and deal with it without being a douche or STFU.
- wreckosaurus, on 08/19/2008, -0/+10I actually had a friend delete music from my itunes because "it sucks and you shouldn't listen to that."
- Maxo1128, on 08/19/2008, -3/+12But it's not just personal taste, there is well made music, and there is poorly made music. That's not up to debate. Of course you can't help liking what you like, but you've gotta draw the line SOMEWHERE.
- fakekevinrose, on 08/19/2008, -0/+8dugg for honesty
- loobis, on 08/19/2008, -2/+10In his defense, he was probably right. He just had a douchey way of saying it.
- MrTinker, on 08/19/2008, -2/+9And how is someone who is hating on music nerds better than someone who is hating on music? Isn't it just as pathetic that he took the time to make a whole comic out of it?
- loobis, on 08/19/2008, -0/+7I'm with you. I consider myself a pretentious music fan as well, but I can't base my friends on that. Some of them listen to Matchbox 20 and go to Kenny Chesney concerts. I'm not trying to change anybody. Do I think my music is better than theirs? Yes. Do I think that makes me better than them? No.
- LemonChicken, on 08/19/2008, -0/+7....what's wrong with Eifiel 65?
Uh oh. - billbugger, on 08/19/2008, -2/+9"502 Bad Gateway" is a horrible band. They don't even have any music released and their website sucks!
- Stupidumb, on 08/19/2008, -0/+7so then you're not a d bag.
