- krypton24, on 12/19/2007, -6/+74Why tip someone for a job I'm capable of doing myself? I can deliver food. I can drive a taxi. I can, and do, cut my own hair. I did however, tip my urologist, because I am unable to pulverize my own kidney stones. -Dwight Schrute
- Adoxos, on 12/19/2007, -3/+62The sad part is, there is a brutal truth to it. I used to work at Pizza Hut and there were some guys out front always heckling customers for change, my manager offered them a job and they turned it down because they made TOO much money!
- richmessenger, on 12/19/2007, -2/+55I know this is satire, however when I lived in Atlanta I actually saw one of those guys getting out of his BMW for work. If you go to the rich part of any big city you probably could make pretty good money.

- Dibou, on 12/19/2007, -1/+23There are people in this world that have healthy limbs amputated to get more money while begging.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tourette - bongle, on 12/19/2007, -0/+14Given a 8 hour work day giving you 480 minutes to collect cans, that means you're picking a can up once every 5.8 seconds or so. This may seem easy if you're in a field of cans, but there'll be can-less dry spots where there are no cans to collect, meaning you'll have to pick your average up once you're in a can-rich area.
Another way of looking at it: Suppose life is like a video game where you can pick a can up by walking over it without slowing down. A human walks at about 5km/h. So as you cover 40km in a day, you'd have to encounter a can every 8 meters (26 feet) in order to hit your quota. By the end of the day, you'd be carrying 75kg of cans. Maybe I've just lived in clean cities all my life, but where would you find such a can-dense location?
All that said, there was a guy in downtown Waterloo, ON that seemed to have franchised his bum operation. You could see him during the day with a sign reading "I NEED TWO DOLLARS", but at the end of the day you might catch him with a shopping cart full of identical signs. - teh_techie, on 12/19/2007, -5/+18I've never given a cent to a window washer. My windows are kept clean by ME. I can do it myself. I don't want them sticking that grubby squeegie on my fresh windshield!
- TomTruelle, on 12/19/2007, -0/+13I call "drunk bums trying to impress your waitress girlfriend"igans
- inkhead, on 12/19/2007, -2/+15The BMW he was getting out of was from the guy who he just finished giving a blowjob to.
Either that or it was a prank just like this video. - openpaledot, on 12/19/2007, -0/+12I thought that was the Geico caveman.
- Mizzike, on 12/19/2007, -1/+12just a thought: please watch the video (or read the article) before you make comments. kthxbai.
- jefuchs, on 12/19/2007, -0/+10LOL Good video.
I've seen guys making good money in Houston. I've considered doing the same if I ever lose my job. The key is the pitiful look. I'm an amputee, and I figure I'll leave my expensive prosthetics at home and work the corner wearing a peg leg made of a 2x4. - RJGII, on 12/19/2007, -0/+95000 cans/day = 208.33... cans/hour = 3.47 cans/minute - and that's working all 24 hours. 10.4 cans/minute for an 8 hour day. (Near) impossible.
- apologeticus, on 12/19/2007, -1/+10Looks like you should have spent a little more money on English classes.
- CrackyJSquirrel, on 12/19/2007, -1/+9Actually there are many places that a homeless person can go and find a room with a shower and washing machine facilities for approximately $20-$30 a day. Its a daily bases and no contract. Its all up to the homeless person and what they want to do with their life. Nobody else is to blame for their situation, and nobody else but themselves are responsible for getting out of it. If a person is sane enough they have no excuse.
- Mizzike, on 12/19/2007, -2/+10i call shenanigans.
- LooterMcBeer, on 12/19/2007, -6/+14My ex girlfriend used to work at a big steak house in town here and there was 3 bums that used to come in everynight for dinner. After she served them for about a year they would pretty much tell her anything. All 3 of them drove new caddys or BMWs, the smallest house of the 3 was 3300 sq ft and they told her they made around $150,000/year being a bum. All that completely tax free.
- Attacus, on 12/19/2007, -6/+13Cry me a ***** river. Why do people always have to shed a tear for a ***** joke about a "touchy" subject.
- rajanyadav, on 12/19/2007, -1/+8Proof or it did not happen

- jgambleii, on 12/19/2007, -1/+7Not *****, sherlock.
- inactive, on 12/19/2007, -0/+6One time a guy went up to me at 7-11 and just flat out said 'you know what, I'll be honest with you, I just want a beer - just a King Cobra.' So I said what the hell, then bought it for him. We both left and I got into my Toyota, and he got into his Land Rover.
But I've learned some great tips to avoid giving money to homeless, or at least the crazy ones. Just pretend you're crazy yourself and they'll usually sympathize with you. - inactive, on 12/19/2007, -1/+7Edited for truth:
Sadly, in Today's America, one man being millionaire means he needs to keep saving because he'll need more than that to retire. - cambob76, on 12/19/2007, -0/+6If I was an amputee, I'd always use a 2X4 as a limb.
- Gryffydd, on 12/19/2007, -0/+5Reminds me of the ex-leper on Life of Brian...
- asdfuiop, on 12/19/2007, -0/+5I know you were quoting someone else, but I thought you should know that when I worked as a waiter in Florida my base pay was $2.25 an hour because they assumed tips into calculation of minimum wage.
Tip nicely the next time you eat out! :) - luchid, on 12/19/2007, -0/+5Really mature response.
- inkhead, on 12/19/2007, -1/+6I'm sure they did.... Lets see $8/hour vs. 20 cents a window. The person turned down the job (might have said because he made to much and was trying to save pride), but he has NO way to shower, no way to show up at work without being disgusting, and nowhere to live. How is a guy who hasn't showered in two weeks going to start a job at Pizza Hut? Are you going to advance him two weeks pay first? Even then what could he do? rent a hotel for 3 days?
People treat homeless like dirt, homeless people are normal people who don't have family that give a crap or gave up on them, are all alone, and usually mentally disturbed. - legalese, on 12/19/2007, -2/+7I wouldn't be too eager to say these guys are making a ton of money. Exceptions don't make a rule, and the majority of people panhandling in this way are still stuck far below the poverty line.
- spudnic, on 12/19/2007, -0/+4Not real! Holy *****!
Next you'll be telling me that documentary I saw about the Cylons wasn't real either. - andy3109, on 12/19/2007, -0/+4That math was bogus. The numbers are probably more around $1.50/car * 30 cars per hour * 8 hours per day * 5 days in a work week * 52 weeks in a year = $93,500.
Also consider they have no kind of health, dental, vision, life insurance which a usual job that pays that much will cover. And they legally should be paying taxes, as that number above far exceeds the "gift" amount. If they had a credit card w/ an apartment, car, etc. they could be legally audited. - vertinox, on 12/19/2007, -0/+4I've gotten into fist fights with those corner window washers.
- inactive, on 12/19/2007, -2/+6Haha, Kelly is a girl's name.
- BESTenemy, on 12/19/2007, -0/+4I had to fill up at a gas station once and there was a guy sitting by the cashier booth, begging. I gave him a few bucks. As I was waiting for the cashier, through the window I saw the guy get up, walk across the street, get into his car and drive to the very same gas station to fill it up, obviously with the money that he had collected off customers...
That was the point in my life when I quit giving money to strangers. - xsidekick409, on 12/19/2007, -0/+3Actually, it is a very real humor piece.
- IHaveIssues, on 12/19/2007, -1/+4Um...it was a humour piece...y'know, meant to be funny.
- GhostyBoy, on 12/19/2007, -0/+3Too many people on his site make good comments and then blow it at the last sentence trying to be smart-asses.
- zomgflamer, on 12/19/2007, -2/+5I applied this concept to collecting cans, its not as productive as window washing but possible.
You collect 5000 cans a day (5cents each) (bottles or glasses are worth more) you make $250 a day you do this for 5 days a week and in 1 month you make $5000 tax free. Forget 10 years of education and tuition to get a Ph.D when you can collect cans, work outside and get a good exercise and make 5Gs a month. - republicker, on 12/19/2007, -0/+3Yea , if he bought a new t-shirt or something, that could cost him at least 5 bucks. sheesh
- gte879p, on 12/19/2007, -1/+4which is fine, until you try to find 5000 cans in one day (can you can hunt while it's raining? Do you have to move around continually to find new sources of cans to harvest?). Additionally, this only nets you a theoretical $60,000 a year. "Wow that sounds like alot!". Except you have no health benefits, and less (easy) investment opportunities (i.e. 401k match) . I'd rather take a 60k job and pay my 20%+ taxes, than try to find 25,000 cans every week.
At least then, I can try to work hard for a raise, instead of trying to find 30,000 cans if i want a raise. - Frnnkdlxx, on 12/19/2007, -1/+4Because I care about my country and not everything is funny, perhaps. I apologize if I made you think about the fast delapidating infrastructure and loss of the middle class...
- Billistic, on 12/19/2007, -0/+3When would you open your slurry plant?
- ZoomBoy, on 12/19/2007, -0/+2This is my BOOMSTICK!!!
- monroetransfer, on 12/20/2007, -0/+2That's also a good way to avoid trouble in bad parts of town. If somebody starts giving you trouble like maybe they're going to rob you, usually what I'd do is put on a severe tic, shake my head a bit, and mutter something strange like "fffffuuuhhh... fffffuuuuuhhhhhhhh... ffffffuuuuuhhhhhck da wife. ***** da wife. ffffffuuuuhhhhhh..."
- iparker, on 12/19/2007, -0/+1yea but by the article it seems that gangs in india forced beggars to amputate their limbs so they could gain more sympathy / more handouts.. most of them probably didn't just do it to get more money for themselves.
- Farmer77, on 12/19/2007, -0/+1I read about this in the newspaper, bums collecting cans do make enough to live in an apartment and such. They said the trick was to find a place where they can collect a lot of cans or bottles in one shot, like outside of a club in the morning.
- Rekzai, on 12/19/2007, -0/+1I don't care if you enjoyed it
- mal1964, on 12/19/2007, -0/+1The only thing that was a surprise and i applaud them, was no grooming nice,.
