- octoberism, on 05/26/2008, -78/+876Actually, the dragons died for your sins. You better be grateful.
- jimmick, on 05/26/2008, -72/+575Note to everyone -
Science does not need to compete with religion.
Thank you
(Just stay out of congress, please) - Eisim, on 05/26/2008, -276/+735Religion: ***** you
- lukeb1222, on 05/26/2008, -70/+438I'm religious... and it's still funny.
- thebadkitty, on 05/26/2008, -18/+334Plenty of foreplay, obviously.
- staffell, on 05/26/2008, -4/+302that's an awesome flashlight
- texxel, on 05/26/2008, -44/+288Wow, such a sophisticated debate on science and religion.
/sarcasm - Virgule, on 05/26/2008, -9/+236Only the truly faithfuls can see the dragons. You are not. GET HIM!
- einrobstein, on 05/26/2008, -29/+187We don't yet know what happened before the big bang. There are many theories, but none are proveable at this point. But this doesn't mean that we should invent some cockamamie creation story involving disembodied voices and omnipotent beings to fill in the blanks.
- NiMip, on 05/26/2008, -19/+157CrudeDarkness said this earlier: "OK science, here is a question for you: What came before the big bang?"
I could reply directly to his post, but I feel like doing it here.
You know what I love about scientists? They don't pretend to know everything. They put forward ideas and theories after huge amounts of thought and speculation, rigorously test these theories against everything they can think of, and then they accept it as impossible, improbable, plausible, highly probable, or fact. They're always discovering new things, and always happy to be proven wrong.
What they don't do is this: "How was the universe created, and what was there before then? Heck, I'm stumped. There must be some kind of mystical being that created everything... Yeah that's it! No evidence suggests such a thing, so it must be true!" - Andyl194, on 05/26/2008, -4/+138That was some impressive CGI
- yosserhughes, on 05/26/2008, -17/+139Here's a list of the 20 most popular religions, I'm sure there are others but you get the picture. One thing you should note is that not one of them has a majority, which means that the other 19 could out-vote the remaining one.
Therefore, all the gods listed below don't exist by popular vote, if we asked for a show of hands for the True God, no-one would win.
Furthermore, all of people attached to these religions are atheists in regards to the other 19 gods. So, if someone accuses you of being an Atheist just say, "Well so are you, I just don't believe in one god more than you".

Now, what (or where) is 5 miles north?
The question itself is without meaning. Time exists within the context of this universe. Without time, concepts like 'before' simply have no meaning. There was no 'before' (not as we understand it). - thebadkitty, on 05/26/2008, -15/+102how DARE you forget to mention FSM. May you be lashed by his noodley appendages.
- greenfrogblue, on 05/26/2008, -6/+92light kills dragons.. duh
- Daggity, on 05/26/2008, -4/+89Like the one in my garage? :D
http://www.godlessgeeks.com/LINKS/Dragon.htm - Agger, on 05/26/2008, -13/+97I would say the dragons symbolize every lie told by religions. Science comes with it's flashlight of truth!
- inactive, on 05/26/2008, -17/+98I got one for you, how does a thinking being exist befores there's anything to think about?
Where was God before he created the Universe?
What composed God before what contains and composes him was invented?
How does a complex being exist before the simple elements that compose him exist?
Why can't God just show himself and settle the debate for the end of times? - einrobstein, on 05/26/2008, -32/+104"How EXACTLY do you rationalise the fact that MANY world-class scientists, many of whom are EXTREMELY prestigious across the whole spectrum of science, are devout Christians (not to mention other religions)?"
Because they were indoctrinated at a very young age when they lacked the faculties of critical thinking. Then their beliefs were reinforced throughout their lives by the majority of people around them. They also saw how atheists were discriminated against and internalized that.
Just because someone adheres to christianity, doesn't necessarily make them more or less intelligent than anyone else. They may be extremely intelligent in every other aspect of their lives. They just happen to believe one thing without evidence and are able to somehow justify the cognitive dissonance caused by understanding science and believing in Christianity simultaneously.
Science is in fact in direct opposition to religion because religion defies rationality and the scientific method. "Scientific method refers to the body of techniques for investigating phenomena, acquiring new knowledge, or correcting and integrating previous knowledge. It is based on gathering observable, empirical and measurable evidence subject to specific principles of reasoning. A scientific method consists of the collection of data through observation and experimentation, and the formulation and testing of hypotheses." Religion is not based on any observable, empirical or measureable evidence and it certainly does not allow for the correction of previous knowledge by integrating new knowledge.
The scientific method was started by the ancient egyptians at least as early as 1600 BC. So unless you're trying to make an argument for egyptian polytheism, I suggest you choose a different tact.

There is good reason to hate religion. It brainwashes the masses into worshipping imaginary figures and impedes them from understanding the true nature of the world and existence. Also, countless people have been killed in the name of religion or during conflicts springing from religious differences (crusades, witch trials, etc.).
So christianity is practiced by alot of people. Is that supposed to be an argument for why christianity is the "right" religion? Mandarin Chinese has more speakers than any other language, does that make it the "right" language? Islam is the fastest growing religion in the world. Does that make it the "right" religion?
Watch a few episodes of this show http://www.atheist-experience.com/archive/index.ph ... and maybe you'll get it. It's likely that you won't, but at least try to open your mind to the possibility that all religions are false and there is no evidence for the existence of god. - nonchai, on 05/26/2008, -21/+92actually in the USA may atheists remain "closet" precicely because the majority around them are born again bigots who very often choose to demonise the local atheists rather than just accept the fact that not everyone believes in their imaginary omnipotent friend
- hauntedchippy, on 05/26/2008, -30/+99When religion claims to know something of the natural world (and most do) then yes, it does have to compete.
- Cyrus001, on 05/26/2008, -39/+107Silly Religion. Dragons are extinct.
- Stepoo, on 05/26/2008, -11/+75Inaccurate. Wheres the backpack?
- inactive, on 05/26/2008, -9/+72So open the frickin' door.
- Soupasam, on 05/26/2008, -3/+63I thought Scientology didn't count?
- TheCatsPants, on 05/26/2008, -9/+68You are right in that plenty of people who are religious can accept the major theories of science without a problem. My problem is with those people who think that the bible has to be taken literally, and really do think that all scientists are atheists working for satan. It worries the hell out of me that some people want to go back to the middle ages, living in a theocracy where anything thought to contradict the bible is heresy or a sin. It worries me that such people are putting a lot of money into using politics to push their agenda. I don't hate religion or christianity. I just think that we need to speak out if we want to avoid a regression to the dark ages.
On a side-note, just because a lot of people believe something doesn't make it true, no matter how educated those people are. - dmightx, on 09/21/2008, -7/+65Notice how "science" had to turn the flash light on first to prove there was no dragons. I don't think *anyone* has the capacity to prove whether god exists or not. I wish you could just turn on a flashlight like that guy but you can't. Yeah there may be little chance of a supreme being in existence but seriously think about how huge the Universe is and tell me that it is 100% impossible for something like that to exist. There is so much energy everywhere.
Anyways, I don't understand why you bring agnostics into the picture. I am going to assume that the "God" you speak of is from the religions of the world. In that case I would agree with you saying that they classify under the same range as Zeus. - aseriesoftubes, on 05/26/2008, -8/+65So, first you said there were dragons in the room. Then we proved there were no dragons in the room so you claimed the dragons were actually outside the room and/or invisible. Now at this stage we could break out Occam's razor and say why believe in dragons we can't see and which aren't necessary to explain the existence of the room but I think instead it's just worth observing that the analogy in the cartoon is holding up pretty well...
- Scrappy1850, on 05/26/2008, -26/+82im not religious, and i dont think this is funny.
- staffell, on 05/26/2008, -32/+81lol
- sumokitty, on 05/26/2008, -4/+53where can i get info about this dragon worshiping religion?
- XIUgraag, on 05/26/2008, -8/+57Uhm, that means you are agnostic...
- EddietheHated, on 05/26/2008, -1/+47I mean this in the best way, so no offense intended: You have the tact of a mentally handicapped lemur.
- sonnybobiche, on 05/26/2008, -54/+100The dragons are outside the room. No flashlight you could ever invent is gonna let you see them. Does that mean they don't exist?
- ayeroxor, on 05/26/2008, -2/+47Yours?
Oh, you meant "Who's". - thedzigner, on 05/26/2008, -16/+61How did Science know he was in a room in the first place?
- kelstock, on 05/26/2008, -29/+73You woke the bears! Why did you do that?!
- Drugx2, on 05/26/2008, -2/+45Best reply of the day award goes to you. stand up and take a bow!
- AntParmenter, on 05/26/2008, -4/+46ALL HAIL THE FLYING SPAGHETTI MONSTER!
- flashback99, on 05/26/2008, -8/+50it didn't. Just a bitter person with a delusion showed up.
- inactive, on 05/26/2008, -7/+49Maybe God exists, maybe God doesn't. As an atheist, I cannot completely rule out the possibility of the existence of God, but I have reached the conclusion that the existence of God is irrelevant. Either there is no God, or there is a God that has absolutely no evidence to support His existence. If there is no evidence of God, then God cannot possibly have any impact on my life, so why worry about it?
- vMsam, on 05/26/2008, -11/+53religion wasn't even supposed to show when science turned on the lights..
- fas2, on 05/26/2008, -13/+53OK religion, here is a question for you: What came before god?
- nemojonze, on 05/26/2008, -5/+45The dragons only show-up when you play with yourself.
- DCGaymer, on 05/26/2008, -2/+39I want his sauce all over me.
- zspade, on 05/26/2008, -3/+39Wait, where did you get this list? Sources please.
