      Thats the real story. A solder went MIA after a firefight and a couple of British soldiers strapped themelves to the wings of the chopper so they could get to him and recover his body.

Sorry for the confusion. I beleive there are a couple of real pictures floating about the itnernet but I couldn't find them. Regardless, it takes a pretty brave soldier to get up on that thing even if it's just for a joy ride.

        The gunship is a WAH-64 Apache.

        What appears to you as a "jet" is actually a RAM Air intake for cooling purposes.

These (as well as the majority of army vehicles) run on JP-8, which is essentially diesel fuel. What he is sitting in front of is actually a nose gear box, which sits in front of a 701 or 701C GE turboshaft engine, which has plenty of air intake.

        This type of exercise isn't normally trained for, but has happened several timese under extreme rescue situations (just recently for a downed OH-58 Kiowa team). Anyway hope that helps.

    • MozzieTS, on 07/11/2008, -0/+31not true, Apaches actually have rings and harnesses for riding outside the chopper. The original purpose is that if a apache gets shot down in a group they can pick up the surivors with the other apache.

      It's been used for special forces as well to deploy SF operators without needing the lumbering RPG magnet of a black hawk. It's a rare occurrence though and exclusively for emergences and rescue operations.

        Looking at other pictures of Apaches, I'm going to say this image is quite questionable due to the proximity of the turbine intake. I don't think it would be very safe to sit there.

I understand that helicopters can't move like a jet, it's a different piece of equipment all together that relies on different methods. There were some people up higher in the comments that wondered about the jet intake. I'm sure with the speeds that it looked like they were going there wasn't too much effect on that soldier, other than maybe the wind, but even then, it looks like it's a pretty viable way to get an accurate shot on some dirty bad guys on a rescue mission.
