Thats the real story. A solder went MIA after a firefight and a couple of British soldiers strapped themelves to the wings of the chopper so they could get to him and recover his body.- chiefbandit2200, on 07/11/2008, -0/+4How do you know that's what the picture is from?
- ZigZags, on 07/11/2008, -0/+3Initially I was thinking wow, awesome...soldiers just having fun. After finding out the back story, this pic takes a dramatic turn. It's nice to see these rays of heroism amidst the usual abundance of bad or trivial news. Thanks Po0py.
- Thoth49, on 07/11/2008, -0/+12That's not a british soldier on that chopper, he's wearing ACUPAT.
- LordArchan, on 07/12/2008, -0/+2That picture is not from the article. In the picture it is a US soldier riding on the weapons pylon of the Apache, not a British one. Interesting article regardless.
- Po0py, on 07/12/2008, -0/+1Yes. I should clarify. I knew that picture probably was not the British soldiers involved in the rescue but it immediately reminded me of the story. Sorry for the confusion. I beleive there are a couple of real pictures floating about the itnernet but I couldn't find them. Regardless, it takes a pretty brave soldier to get up on that thing even if it's just for a joy ride.
- cheese06, on 07/11/2008, -8/+3its fun until you realize how destructive the apache helicopter is. case in point:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=WKAxmyRau4E- lostarchitect, on 07/11/2008, -0/+14well, it is a weapon... so if it's not destructive, it's kinda useless.
- Ayavaron, on 07/11/2008, -1/+1Actually, the weapon in that video is kind of ineffective. It's ridiculously inaccurate. I don't think I saw a single shot hit the crosshair location.
- allenthar, on 07/11/2008, -0/+3The distance between them and the target was unbelievably extreme, judging by the time difference between the sounds of gunfire and the actual hits. So I think the inaccuracy isn't that bad considering.

sounds pretty reasonable.- Blitzenn, on 07/11/2008, -13/+3Except the guy is sitting in front of the jet intake. hmm. If true, I am not sure that I would call it being 'rescued'
- Petrie, on 07/11/2008, -8/+6Jet intake? It's a ***** helicopter!
- DM01, on 07/11/2008, -0/+6 You don't think the blades are turned with a diesel engine, do you?
- cdahlkvist, on 07/11/2008, -0/+10Blitzenn: Those are not jets.
The gunship is a WAH-64 Apache.
What appears to you as a "jet" is actually a RAM Air intake for cooling purposes. - SidiousX3, on 07/11/2008, -1/+3It isn't a WAH-64, the WAH-64 is the british built varient... And the AH-64 actually uses a turboshaft engine. It's a jet engine, but it's used to convert to mechanical uses instead of producing thrust.
- lostarchitect, on 07/11/2008, -1/+2i think it's powered by a gas turbine engine, so there's an intake for that thing somewhere... not that i have any idea where.
- lastmaster, on 07/11/2008, -0/+14Sup guys, a longbow pilot here, i can answer these questions if you want. These (as well as the majority of army vehicles) run on JP-8, which is essentially diesel fuel. What he is sitting in front of is actually a nose gear box, which sits in front of a 701 or 701C GE turboshaft engine, which has plenty of air intake.
This type of exercise isn't normally trained for, but has happened several timese under extreme rescue situations (just recently for a downed OH-58 Kiowa team). Anyway hope that helps. - SidiousX3, on 07/13/2008, -0/+0Thought JP8 is kerosene based
- MozzieTS, on 07/11/2008, -0/+31not true, Apaches actually have rings and harnesses for riding outside the chopper. The original purpose is that if a apache gets shot down in a group they can pick up the surivors with the other apache.
It's been used for special forces as well to deploy SF operators without needing the lumbering RPG magnet of a black hawk. It's a rare occurrence though and exclusively for emergences and rescue operations.

Article explaining the picture: http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2007/jan/17/afghan ...- dcoxen, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1You are right, but since the Apache was used only by the US military for so many years, most people associate it with America. 1048 AH-64 Apaches have been built, as opposed to 67 Westland WAH-64 Apaches; the Westland Apaches were also all built after after 1997, as opposed to after 1983 for the US Apache.

- wicketr, on 07/11/2008, -16/+9Um, well these guys aren't idiots. Helicopters can function without jets, and I would imagine they don't use them when a guy is "riding shotgun".
- turbo2ltr, on 07/11/2008, -0/+7The jet engine doesn't provide thrust like a plane, it turns the rotors through a gearbox. If the rotors are spinning enough to fly, the jets are inhaling large amounts of air.
Looking at other pictures of Apaches, I'm going to say this image is quite questionable due to the proximity of the turbine intake. I don't think it would be very safe to sit there. - SillyRabbits, on 07/11/2008, -2/+9"Um, well these guys aren't idiots. I understand that helicopters can't move like a jet, it's a different piece of equipment all together that relies on different methods. There were some people up higher in the comments that wondered about the jet intake. I'm sure with the speeds that it looked like they were going there wasn't too much effect on that soldier, other than maybe the wind, but even then, it looks like it's a pretty viable way to get an accurate shot on some dirty bad guys on a rescue mission.
