I found the recording about a year ago and I had a friend help me to get it onto my computer and now the ringtone on my iPhone is my old 56k modem connecting to Earthlink.
  • mentalfoto, on 04/12/2008, -0/+34I'm 45 so it was even more surreal for those of us that are older, like the first time we got on and used a search engine like say Alta Vista and went "Wow, I feel like Mr. Spock - suddenly I can search for an get an answer for any obscure factoid." And that was way before being able to Wiki some piece of trivial knowledge.

    But you'll have the fun by the time I'm senile drolling in a nursing home to tell your own grandkids "I remember when computers were just a box and flat screen you had to look at instead of all these fancy holograms."

I used to have an Apple Script on my old Mac tied to voice commands where I could say "HAL" instead of the default "Computer" command that made MacInTalk listen for a command and to impress people I'd go "HAL - get email" and the script would cause the modem volume to go to full and I had a sound clip of HAL from 2001 or 2010 going "Just one moment please", modem would kick in and the script would launch Outlook Express and play "There's a message for you". I spent such an insane amount of time cobbling that script together to get it to work, but it was worth it to see people goggle at the "interaction" with HAL. It was also handy in the morning to shuffle past the computer to get it to do that while I headed to make coffee...
