Fake news is so much better than real news. - BLyday, on 09/29/2009, -8/+618To paraphrase David Cross: "What if McDonalds didn't have any commercials for just one day, and used the millions of dollars it saved to help people in need. It's not like people are gonna start saying "Hey did McDonalds stop making hamburgers?! People know you exist."
- ak666jk, on 09/29/2009, -10/+609Digging in hopes that other diggers are deceived by the headline.
- dramakws2, on 09/28/2009, -8/+475Wouldn't it be amazing if the pepsi article was actually true?! Ah how I wish..
- sodade, on 09/29/2009, -20/+287The funny thing is, they could do it and I bet it wouldn't change their sales numbers one bit.
Now, if we could just convince them that ditching that HFCS crap and going back to cane sugar would increase sales dramatically. I haven't drank a US coke or pepsi in 10 years, but I'll always buy those mexi cokes in a bottle. - StuartTaylor, on 09/29/2009, -1/+175Only the Onion could get away with having a story about Pepsi sponsored by Coca Cola
- BartS, on 09/29/2009, -3/+146Yeah, ***** helping people in need.
- Praystation, on 09/29/2009, -1/+140FFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
- IamNOTmrT, on 09/29/2009, -1/+137Interesting ...... TheOnion.com front page today has an ad for Coke Zero
- predatorpasta, on 09/29/2009, -4/+124It would change their sales numbers drastically. You may think ads have no affect on you but they do.
That is what makes advertising so effective; people think it isn't changing their buying habits but it is. You can't honestly believe Coke and Pepsi made it where they are on great taste. - tinkafoo, on 09/29/2009, -1/+119It wouldn't surprise me at all if this turned out to be prophetic -- just like they were with the Gillette 5-blade razor:

- inactive, on 09/29/2009, -2/+81can sugar is more expensive because the government regulates the supply of it to boost corn farmers up. Like usual.
- xptoast, on 09/29/2009, -0/+67I can't believe I got pulled in by a fake news story and believed it. Damn it onion and your good writing skills.
- forcedfx, on 09/29/2009, -4/+66What determines whether I buy Coke or Peps? Which one is $0.80 for a 2 liter that week.
- aprycot, on 09/29/2009, -0/+57it worked...

- anatraj, on 09/29/2009, -0/+46Situational Irony defined.
- jmones, on 09/29/2009, -0/+44Damn I'm thirsty...
- smord, on 09/29/2009, -1/+41Actually sodade that's almost certainly wrong. There's plenty of research that has shown two things:
1. Nearly ALL consumers believe that advertising has no effect on them, because they believe they just ignore it or tune it out.
2. Advertising directly results in better sales, so all of those consumers are wrong. - dashdingo, on 09/29/2009, -5/+43I totally would respect Pepsi way more if this actually happened. Sad it never will, though.
- GregLoire, on 09/29/2009, -4/+42To play the devil's advocate here, if dropping a day's worth of advertising did not cause a long-term loss in overall revenue that exceeds the cost of a day's worth of advertising, then McDonald's would already be advertising less.
- VanSoaked, on 09/29/2009, -7/+44Shoulda used pola' bears.
- bluddystool, on 09/29/2009, -1/+38They did that in early summer with the Throwback drinks. There was a Pepsi and Mountain Dew version. It was only for a limited time though. They probably wanted to see whether it would take off or not but many people complained it "tasted like diet." People are too used to HFCS for them to change it back.
- jumanji69, on 09/29/2009, -1/+35"The funny thing is, they could do it and I bet it wouldn't change their sales numbers one bit."
Oh ok! Pepsi was wasting billions of dollars on advertising and they didn't even know it!? Their extensive marketing research was wrong? Expect a phone call from the president thanking you tonite!
/sarcasm
Sugar flavoured water in a highly competitive market is all about advertising! - adamward, on 09/29/2009, -3/+36Now THAT'S Progressive!™
- BrettersonX, on 09/29/2009, -0/+32My favourite thing about ONN is showing the articles to my wife and her telling me that she "heard about that somewhere".
- tgc1, on 09/29/2009, -0/+32If only Pepsi hadn't have changed their logo.
This is all I see now...
http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_2Ti3rWAuUW4/SaIJROFkJRI/ ... - inactive, on 09/29/2009, -2/+32Pepsi is so good they can afford to change their logo every business quarter.
- TnTBass, on 09/29/2009, -1/+30Just look at what advertising did to the diamond industry. Without it, people wouldn't have this idea that you need to give a diamond for a engagement/wedding ring.
Imagine how many people would be able to live a sustainable life without the rampant consumerism that is all around us. If you aren't constantly told you need the something you didn't really need, you likely won't be running out and buying it.
Yes, people can try to resist advertising but its so pervasive that it is near impossible not to be manipulated. - gyrfalcon, on 09/29/2009, -3/+30You don't notice advertising? How is the weather on your private island man?
Personally I would prefer Pepsi and other mega-corporations to stop sponsoring/advertising no talent hacks like Britney Spears & Christina Aguilera. - hokie47, on 09/29/2009, -1/+28I think I will stick with Sam's Choice Cola. It all taste the same and if there is any difference I don't notice it with rum in it.
- Spire3660, on 09/29/2009, -0/+26@nevermore
Movies arent really moving, they jsut trick your brain into thinking there is motion in a series of still images. Perception IS reality, in this context anyways. - tinkafoo, on 09/29/2009, -4/+29Since I've started using Adblock Plus, it seems like everybody has been doing this for years!
- Jeremyz0r, on 09/29/2009, -0/+25Crap, I dugg the story after reading the article. I didn't notice it was the onion until after I read the first comment. ;_;
- Gravey9, on 09/29/2009, -2/+25I hate the onion, it gets me every time.
- GeekvsDork, on 09/29/2009, -1/+24Article brought to you by Coca Cola Zero.
- stinkybinky, on 09/29/2009, -1/+19me too... gonna go grab some code red just to spite pepsi and give money to the other guys.
/s - 11oops, on 09/29/2009, -1/+19Yeah. It's almost as if Digg should post the domain underneath the submission's title and immediately before the description. Oh, they do that already? Well, then your problem is solved.
- thcobbs, on 09/29/2009, -9/+26That's now becoming as tired as Micro$oft
- joep323, on 09/29/2009, -0/+17Good thought.
- mparker21311, on 09/29/2009, -6/+22I like how this onion article is a mass advertisement for Pepsi. I wonder how much Pepsi paid them?
- Tomoir, on 09/29/2009, -1/+16By threatening my insurance agent with a golf club.
- yocouchdigga, on 09/29/2009, -1/+16LOL, I pretend my hand talks sometimes too!
- Charlotte_Web, on 09/29/2009, -0/+14Even better... there's a tiny little Google ad on the page that says, "Sponsored by Coke Zero"
- sentinel106, on 09/29/2009, -0/+14AdBlock plus irl?
- jbmcb, on 09/29/2009, -17/+31Why? Is Pepsi advertising somehow ruining your life? I don't even notice advertising, and I don't buy soda...
- Treshnell, on 09/29/2009, -0/+13I bought a few packs of it and didn't notice much of a difference. That said, I wouldn't have minded at all had they continued to make it, or simply replaced the HFCS version.
Don't see that happening, though. Isn't cane sugar more expensive than HFCS? -
