It has to do with the fact that those cancer research companies and "charity lotteries" really push this image of the dying child to sell tickets and bring in donations. I'll probably get dugg down for saying this, but there are other diseases and ailments that need attention but I'd wager Cancer takes the most of the donations given out.

AIDs is important too, but cancer still deserves the attention.
