- mmockett, on 09/13/2008, -12/+319*not with all keyboards though... probably would refrain from putting your wireless kb in the dishwasher.
;) - wolphcry, on 09/13/2008, -0/+305I work for the college IT department. We put over 40 keyboards in the dishwasher every summer. Works fine. It's the best way to clean Horticulture and Automotive Repair classes
- ba5e, on 09/13/2008, -4/+294It would still work; just take the batteries out before doing it.

- FireSlash, on 09/13/2008, -9/+155pro tip: PCBs will slowly corrode and/or rust if they get wet. NEVER wash electronics in a dishwasher unless you're sure there are no exposed circuits that could be damaged by rust/corrosion/etc. many old keyboards used mechanical switches which are more or less sealed under a plastic plunger. Most newer ones are just a rubber membrane sandwiched over two sheets of plastic, with keys set on top.
Some keyboards (most "intelligent" keyboards, such as the G15, anything bluetooth/wireless) have logic boards which will be destroyed if they get wet. They might start working after drying out, but they will fail over time due to rust/corrosion.
This is why most laptops that have liquid spilled in them stop working for a week, start working again for a few months, then randomly quit. Same goes for cameras dropped in pools, etc.
Before people digg me down because their xyz survived, stfu. It's situational. Rule of thumb remains that I'd not put anyhing I care about in the dishwasher. use compressed air instead. If it gets really gross, STOP EATING ***** AT YOUR COMPUTER OR CLEAN IT OUT MORE FREQUENTLY YOU ***** SLOB. - inactive, on 09/13/2008, -4/+141It works even better on those shiny MacBook Pros! In fact, all laptops are dishwasher safe. Especially those Umboontoo ones.
- FUR10N, on 09/13/2008, -3/+137Are you sure they weren't dead *before* they were put in the dishwasher?
- konspence, on 09/13/2008, -1/+124It would still work; just take the batteries out before doing it.
- brettg102, on 09/13/2008, -2/+119Zing!
- FDisk, on 09/13/2008, -2/+114I copy/paste the letter with my mouse from the posts above.
- niczar, on 09/13/2008, -3/+110Yup, I've done it, it works. But I don't think any keyboard would survive more than 3 or 4 cycles.
I would instead recommend taking it apart, and just wash the top hard plastic cover and the rubber membrane -- that's where 99% of the dirt is found. - inactive, on 09/13/2008, -4/+107I look forward to seeing this on the front page tomorrow.
- maddog, on 09/13/2008, -15/+113C-C-C-C-COMBO BREAKER!!!!!!
- sadisticmind, on 09/13/2008, -3/+96finally someone did it right
*hands you a gold banana sticker* - prisoner24601, on 09/13/2008, -3/+91"I have encountered the numeral three an inordinate number of times over the last two hours..."
- kcap122, on 09/13/2008, -6/+91you probably could do it if you removed the main battery and the CMOS backup battery from the motherboard also.
- york2600, on 09/13/2008, -0/+84I've done this a dozen times. When you work in IT and get to deal with nasty keyboards with dead keys you learn to love this method. It's a last resort kind of thing. As other posters have said, it doesn't always work, but when it does it's like a brand new keyboard. Saves the company a few bucks.
- Crazymaniacc, on 09/13/2008, -5/+81LOL This was amazing, thanks for the laugh guys!
- thrillki1l, on 09/13/2008, -3/+75I listen to the PC Gamer Magazine podcast and e few episodes ago they said that this does work but they said to let it dry over night.
Your other option which i've done a few times is to use a flathead screwdriver or a butter knife and pry up all your keys then clean it with regular spray cleaner. The keys easily pop right back in. - kujo740, on 09/13/2008, -8/+74I fail to see a problem.
- Ceaser57, on 09/13/2008, -5/+68.
- BossKey, on 09/13/2008, -3/+66I just want to wish you good luck. We're all counting on you.
- Ejek, on 09/13/2008, -8/+64roflmao
- pjpete, on 09/13/2008, -2/+56I happen to have a ton of extra keyboards, so for ***** and giggles I threw one in the dishwasher to clean it. It came out sparkling, but it was totally dead.
- tpclicker, on 09/13/2008, -2/+56I opened up one of my old keyboards and found a live woodlouse crawling around in it, WTF?
- zebragrrl, on 09/13/2008, -1/+52Yah it will.. it actually works GREAT with laptops! Great way to clean off your HD too.Just put the whole laptop in.
If you don't have a dishwasher, you can use your washing machine. Be sure to use an extra spin cycle. Toss your iPhone in too. - Pyehole, on 09/13/2008, -0/+50I wouldn't do this to something like a Logitech G15 but I'd sure as heck do it with something like a standard Dell keyboard. It takes forever to clean a keyboard by popping keys and cleaning with a spray cleaner. And if you've ever seen underneath a keyboard that has seen heavy use you'd happily put it in a dishwasher rather than touch that nasty stuff.
