- inactive, on 08/21/2008, -56/+481I know this is supposed to be a joke but with the current dropout rate I wouldn't be surprised if he is serious. Teens are more concerned about how to acquire a copy of Grand Theft Auto 4 since they aren't old enough to buy it than they are learning basic world history.
- rpong1981, on 08/21/2008, -4/+417you know the domain host sucks when the 1st reply is a mirror
- DarksiderUK, on 08/21/2008, -2/+232So that's what happened to Miss Teen South Carolina...
- svensko, on 08/21/2008, -3/+226I am living in last week, should I be worried?
- inactive, on 08/21/2008, -4/+200I actually heard this in my science class 2 days ago. I ***** you not. We do this thing once a week called current events, well on this particular day we were discussing the tropical storm in Florida. I hear from the girl in front of me, "You know, we should be talking about how we just went to war with Russia."
I hate high school. - xenoc1de, on 08/21/2008, -3/+195know i don't.

- drew52686, on 08/21/2008, -9/+96Seriously, where does the want of GTA IV (or any game for that matter) come into any of this? Blaming video games (and/or the desire for them) for the dropout rate and the general failure of the education system is akin to the people who claimed that short dresses and those who wore them (the flappers) coupled with jazz would lead to the ultimate demise of society (last time I checked those flappers and others in the same generation were the ones who helped America make it through WWII). Blaming video games is the makeshifts of an ignorant person who fails or refuses to delve deeper into the problem to fully understand it.
I may lose people here but, oh well. The true problem is lack of parental guidance -- or lack of parents entirely -- and the continuous budget cuts of social programs. I tutored lower income middle school children with the Community in Schools programs for two summers before funding was cut to the point where we could no longer offer the program at the reduced fee. These kids weren't intrinsically bad but when plan after plan and program after program fails on THEM how do you expect them to respond? Not everybody has the ability or means to "pick themselves up by their bootstraps." Especially when we are dealing with 11, 12 or 13 year old children.
We can sit here in front of our computer screen all day and dish the blame out to undeserving parties but that is only continuing the spread of FUD that culminated when the government started blaming the downturn in the economy of poor performance test results of students (versus those of children in other countries). The truth is, until the government wants to actually try to tackle the problem of the education system and diverts the appropriate amount of money to it, our education will continue to falter; with or without video games. - Sail3, on 08/04/2009, -2/+78Jessica B is a man?!

- splendid, on 08/21/2008, -2/+52Basic world geography, not history, would by my main concern here.

- EtherGnat, on 08/21/2008, -2/+48"Amen to that. I remember a time, not all that long ago, when people on the internet were courteous, used correct spelling, grammar, and sentence structure."
That's funny. I've been on the Internet since 1994 (Usenet, IRC, etc), and BBSs for years before that and I don't remember that every being the case. - elhaf, on 08/21/2008, -1/+46Whoosh!

I'd have to agree with EtherGnat. I was using BBSs from 1980 (at the age of 8) and though most people were polite and well spoken, there's always been a community of idiots running about.
