- kaelyiesta, on 01/06/2008, -7/+134My favorite motivational speaker. I don't call him a comedian, because what he says actually has a point to it. Joe bless George Carlin.
- ordig, on 01/06/2008, -10/+107“The people who cast the votes don't decide an election, the people who count the votes do.”
-Joseph Stalin - Dominatus, on 01/06/2008, -2/+74How about a better metaphor?
There's only one umbrella store in the world and for as long as anyone can remember it's been selling broken umbrellas. Every couple years it says it has new umbrellas in stock and promises these ones won't break, but they do, every single one of them, every single time.
Meanwhile, the people who go the umbrella store and buy the broken umbrellas every year without fail, being hopeful this year they will not break tell the people who complain about the umbrella store that they aren't allowed to complain.
See, in your analogy people are complaining about getting wet. In real life, people who don't vote out of principle are instead complaining about the really ***** umbrella store. - agsinger, on 01/06/2008, -8/+71http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MeSSwKffj9o&feature ...
that one is good too - carlin is brilliant - CaptainCool53, on 01/06/2008, -18/+63If I choose not to use an umbrella and I get wet, I shouldn't complain. The umbrella would have worked and I could have been dry; but no. I chose not to use the umbrella.
If I do use an umbrella and it breaks because it turns out to be a ***** umbrella, then I can complain. The people at the umbrella store told me it would keep me dry, but it didn't.
/metaphor - Furkle, on 01/06/2008, -1/+31holy ***** that was an excellent metaphor.
- imiJnation, on 01/06/2008, -4/+34Carlin is a genius. Of course I'm going to vote. Remember, irony died on 911, and "it is opposite day" can never be a true statement.
- 33PercentGod, on 01/06/2008, -0/+30I pray to Joe Pesci.

- paranoidbrick, on 01/06/2008, -10/+32Other than Clinton, Obama, Edwards, Romney, McCain, Huckabee, and Giuliani judging from poll numbers
- dasdef, on 01/06/2008, -2/+21thats so cool how he just leaves the building.
- edicius, on 01/07/2008, -0/+14Youtube only counts it as a view if you watch the entire video, I'm sure a lot of people closed that tab as soon as he finished talking and didn't watch him bow to the crowd and run down the street. Also, that doesn't count the people that could tell from the thumbnail that they had already seen it before and dugg it up without re-watching. It's usually best not to jump to conclusions.
- enri, on 01/06/2008, -1/+13Then vote for a third party candidate. If you weren't going to vote anyway then you are not 'throwing your vote away'. When the 50% of this nation that 'abandons' the system votes third party maybe they will get the message.

- davidlow, on 01/07/2008, -0/+12Our founding fathers were actually trying to avoid creating a full democracy. They repeatedly emphasized that the U.S. was to be a "republic" and the word democracy doesn't appear in the constitution even once. It was only around the time of Woodrow Wilson's presidency that the national dialog started to be about democracy ("make the world safe for democracy") and the meanings of the two words started to blur.
I learned this one day when I simply searched Google for "democracy republic" because I wanted to know the difference. - swatward, on 01/06/2008, -1/+13not exactly...
- mal1964, on 01/06/2008, -5/+17Apathy is a democracy!
- mashw, on 01/06/2008, -1/+13He's a true social philosopher, he's great.
- manmademark, on 01/06/2008, -4/+16I remember last election I filled out an absentee ballot and it wasn't even tallied. Now I'm not going to vote not because I don't care, I'm not going to vote because I honestly believe that voting is a waste of time and effort
- eeevildictator, on 01/06/2008, -1/+13I'm replying to the comment with the least diggs.
- bagelpirate, on 01/06/2008, -2/+13It can on "it is opposite day."
- misterhat, on 01/06/2008, -0/+10Yes, Hitler was appointed Chancellor by the democratically elected President. But his appointment in NO WAY is what gave him the power to do what he did. An election did.
Hitler came into power after the Reichstag incident and subsequent elections. After this election the NSDAP got a majority in the legislative body, who then used that power to make Hitler the Fuhrer when Hindenburg died early '34.
That is why people (including most historians) say that Hitler came to power through democratic means. - smashingmonkey, on 01/24/2008, -1/+11I agree - apathy kills democracy. But what's that have to do with the USA? We have democracy like movie theater nachos have cheese - it resembles what it's supposed to be just enough to keep stupid people buying it, but in the end it's just processed crap sold for corporate profit.
- FearFactory, on 01/07/2008, -2/+12On that note. For all the people who voted for Bush in the last 2 elections ***** you and please stay home election day.
- ordig, on 01/06/2008, -0/+9"Go back to bed, America, your government has figured out how it all transpired. Go back to bed America, your goverment is in control. Here, here's American Gladiators. Watch this, shut up, go back to bed America, here is American Gladiators, here is 56 channels of it! Watch these pituitary retards bang their ***** skulls together and congratulate you on the living in the land of freedom. Here you go America - you are free to do what well tell you! You are free to do what we tell you!"

- rockchops, on 01/06/2008, -3/+11All praise George Carlin! :-)
- Travelsonic, on 01/07/2008, -3/+10Nah, he is a comedian making a point.
- ESTEBEVERDE, on 01/07/2008, -1/+8He is absolutely 100% correct with the diagnosis of our countries illness but equally 100% incorrect as to the solution!
Still dugg cause he's as funny as all hell! - geoboy, on 01/07/2008, -0/+7The complainers who don't vote absolutely are all lazy or apathetic *****. Let's take Dominatus's analogy even further. So there's only one store for umbrellas, and they always break every ***** time. So you, the lazy principled ***** that you are, choose not to buy their umbrellas and complain about how the umbrella store is so corrupt as you soak in the rain with no umbrella whatsoever. You could, however, be a more outgoing and productive person by... I don't know, starting your own umbrella factory? If everyone was truly sick of getting wet, you'd think it'd be easy to start a new umbrella revolution. But no. All the complainers are lazy apathetic ***** who'd rather get wet than fight for real functioning umbrellas.
- dasdef, on 01/07/2008, -0/+7i dont.
- nottidredd, on 01/06/2008, -5/+12Democracy is a cancer on the Republic
- Apokalyps2547, on 01/07/2008, -0/+6Democracy: an old Greek word meaning a government ruled by the People.
Republic: an old Latin word meaning a government ruled by the People. - mal1964, on 01/07/2008, -0/+6I think it’s the duty of the comedian to find out where the line is drawn and cross it deliberately.

- Ender110, on 01/06/2008, -3/+8The number of views is substantially lower than the number of diggs. More than half of the people who dugg this story didn't even watch the video.

- worthone, on 01/07/2008, -0/+5"Hey, I'll just digg this Carlin video so I can watch it later and not now at work. God bless bookmarking sites!"
Besides, George Carlin gets an automatic digg. - stoanhart, on 01/06/2008, -0/+5True, but if the election is between two evils, the best case scenario is the lesser of the two. It would still make more sense to vote and at least try to guarantee that outcome.
- SilverhammerMBA, on 01/06/2008, -0/+5I'm not sure if I'm going to vote this election. My beef isn't so much that "politicians suck", because of course nobody is going to be perfect and satisfy everyone. My problem with the election is the ridiculous partisan system that silences anyone who refuses to agree completely with either side. Our government wholeheartedly encourages black and white politics: either you're a Democrat, you're a Republican, or you're not in office. The result isn't a system that serves the people, it's a system that just pisses everyone off equally.
How can there ever be progress if all we ever do is flop back and forth between extremes? - inactive, on 01/07/2008, -0/+5Best comment in the video, "This country was bought and sold a long time ago"
Doesn't get truer than that. - slayerab, on 01/06/2008, -2/+6Joe Pesci 2008
- ChokingVictims, on 01/06/2008, -3/+7I don't really think it's apathy he's advocating. He's more or less abandoning a broken system. We have two choices for president and both choices suck, why vote?
- thephosphorbox, on 01/06/2008, -0/+4Garbage In Garbage Out is one of the most true statements you could possibly make about this trainwreck of a country we live in.
- akashra, on 01/06/2008, -0/+4WTF? No he wasn't. Hitler was appointed by a democratically elected governor, but he lost the election when he ran for any positions of office himself.
His appointment is roughly equivalent to Australia's Governor-General appointment. - mal1964, on 01/06/2008, -1/+5Were no strangers to love
You know the rules and so do i
