So why would someone not try to pass the time with a game? Should they rather just sit and tell dirty jokes all day? Military training and operations involve a lot of waiting.
      To make it in the tone of the other images, it should rather be him playing chess while clearing a mine field with handheld metal-detector.

Part of the accomplishment was being able to bring the board onto the ride itself.

Also, any idiot can go to an amusement park and hide a folding chessboard into a shirt. Not any idiot can or even has access to a helicopter. And this particular individual has accomplished a rigorous training program to be able to even set foot on that helicopter for a training event (you'll notice the tape on the M-16s). So no, your assessment is crap - it took much more effort to get that chess set onto a helicopter.

          FYI: It's obviously training, but the tape has nothing to do with it. The tape is actually a label with a rack number so the guys in the armory have an easier job.

If they ask, say it's for the pic at the end - if you're going to spend the $10 (or whatever) for the pic I don't think they'll mind much. People lose glasses cases, wallets, cell phones, and other things - I can think of many things flying out of a roller coaster that would hurt more.

      He's an officer (Captain) so he's less likely to get ***** for it. Plus a helicopter is a smoother ride than a rollercoaster usually.

      Though the facepaint suggests he's going somewhere with shooting or a training exercise.
