(You know, those things where you have to cross your eyes to get the the image to line up properly with your left and right visual fields so you see a hidden image) He keeps trying and keeps failing to see it. Meanwhile someone comes by and says, "Ha! It's a sailboat"! I think he gets really ***** because he can't see it. But he might also be more ***** because that's kind of a spoiler.

        Speaking of spoilers, this magic eye image displays two blocks of text that say: "Stop wasting your time" and "Get a life". I suspect this is playing into the fact that there are some people who are unable (for whatever reason) to properly cross their eyes to see magic eye images. It does take some concentration to properly align your eyes to reveal the image. That includes slowly moving your eyes from left to right individually until they line up with the visual mode of the hidden image.

        • Miketwo345, on 03/14/2008, -6/+1This one is a cross-eyed version. Most magic eyes are parallel-eye versions (you look "past" the image, so that the right eye see only the right, and the left only the left, and your brain computes the 3d effect.).

          In this cross-eyed version, you have to cross your eyes and then slowly uncross, trying to get something into focus (the right eye sees the left side of the image and vice-versa). It takes a few tries, but it's easy once you get it.

    • aywwts4, on 03/14/2008, -0/+2He simply repeats the text twice, look for both occurrences of each word on each line, I'm sure all words must be equidistant from each other, which isn't hard if you use a monotype font like courier. count how many charecters they are apart since this seems to work well, write your text in the correct places, fill in the rest with spaces, then turn on the insert key and write your gibberish words, making sure they all fit, I would do one on digg, but this isnt a monotype font, and that would probably be a bitch to do.

To find out if this is why you can't see them, hold a finger up about halfway between your face and your computer screen. Look past the finger and focus on the computer screen -- do you see 2 fingers? If you only see one finger, or if one is much better defined than the other, you may favor one eye too much to do the Magic Eye. Close each eye one at a time to find out which.

All you have to do is look far into the white spacing in between the words until all the words stick together. The easy way is doing cross eye.
    • AL7AIR, on 03/14/2008, -0/+3There is another way: Instead of starring behind the picture, which doesn't work for everybody, get a pencil or another pointy object and position yourself and the pencil in a direct line infront of the magic eye image while holding the pencil at half the distance. Now focus on the pencil's tip, and adjust distance of the pencil if necessary to achieve "a second focus" in the background where your "cross eye vision" hits the image. Some people get it quicker this way, then doing cross eye alone.

      I didn't make this up, it's one of the described methods in a magic eye book I own.

        Stupidly, you perk up and try to pay attention while you still can and...the image disappears.

        Thus, you spend the next 8 hours trying to make the image reappear.

Your brain has a mechanism to combine the two fields of view together to make one. You have to not do that mechanism and separate the fields. everything will be spread apart and the magic eyes images will come together and pop out. you may have to work on getting your brain not to combine your eyes. i've always been able to do it at will - i actually do it accidentally alot if im staring at something for a short periods of time. i like making people have 3 eyes by doing it :)

        the trick you mention does help in crossing the eyes in the correct direction, but there is the possibility of going too far - it's possible to double-cross, etc.

        the way i learned to do them was from a magic eye book with a glossy cover - look at the glossy reflection, and not the actual image. once you get the hang of it you should be able to see any of them within 1 or 2 seconds

Because the end up still being words, you don't process them as 'wrong' and don't notice them unless you know what to look for.

      I wrote a Magic Eye generator long, long ago, so I knew exactly what to look for. I'm now considering how to do a text one...
