- Peepo, on 03/14/2008, -8/+19OK, I'm a ***** idiot.
Could someone explain this thing to me?- VinceNoir, on 03/14/2008, -1/+36In one of Kevin Smith's films there is this guy who is desperately trying to see a magic eye image. (You know, those things where you have to cross your eyes to get the the image to line up properly with your left and right visual fields so you see a hidden image) He keeps trying and keeps failing to see it. Meanwhile someone comes by and says, "Ha! It's a sailboat"! I think he gets really ***** because he can't see it. But he might also be more ***** because that's kind of a spoiler.
Speaking of spoilers, this magic eye image displays two blocks of text that say: "Stop wasting your time" and "Get a life". I suspect this is playing into the fact that there are some people who are unable (for whatever reason) to properly cross their eyes to see magic eye images. It does take some concentration to properly align your eyes to reveal the image. That includes slowly moving your eyes from left to right individually until they line up with the visual mode of the hidden image.- xkorbin, on 03/14/2008, -0/+3The movie is Mallrats, and it was a good movie.
- BrotherMonk, on 03/14/2008, -2/+0Even better if you get the DVD version and see the original beginning - the movie makes a lot more sense if they had just kept that part....
"Brody man... snootchie bootchie!" - TheUberDork, on 03/14/2008, -0/+2actually, a a group of children comes by to look and says "it's a schooner" and Ethan Suplee's character, having been told over and over by that point in the movie, shouts at him "HA! it's a sail boat!" And as Cbittle points out above one of the children then explains, "a schooner IS a sailboat stupid-head."
go watch the movie. 2nd in the Jersey series. - Solis, on 03/14/2008, -0/+2I can not see magic eye images. I sometimes wonder if it's all a lie and people are making this ***** up.

- ArmandoM, on 03/14/2008, -0/+3See, the reason you're not a Kevin Smith fan is that you haven't seen Mallrats...
- bingobongony, on 03/15/2008, -0/+1But if you haven't seen it, then the reference is meaingless with or without the part tellng you what it is. You don't tell what is basically an inside joke and then try to explain to to people. It defeats the purpose.

- VitriolAndAngst, on 03/14/2008, -2/+11Took me 45 seconds -- I didn't know text could do the Magic Eye effect. Pretty cool.
OK, now I'm going to take its advice.- InferiorWang, on 03/14/2008, -0/+5I can't see it. :(
And I can usually do magic eye pics.- tehrich, on 03/14/2008, -0/+1Yeah, it works a bit differently than a regular one I think. I'm the same way in that I can see the normal ones pretty easily. This one took me a few seconds.
- Miketwo345, on 03/14/2008, -6/+1This one is a cross-eyed version. Most magic eyes are parallel-eye versions (you look "past" the image, so that the right eye see only the right, and the left only the left, and your brain computes the 3d effect.).
In this cross-eyed version, you have to cross your eyes and then slowly uncross, trying to get something into focus (the right eye sees the left side of the image and vice-versa). It takes a few tries, but it's easy once you get it. - svivian, on 03/14/2008, -0/+6@Miketwo345: This is no different to any other magic eye. You can always see the picture by crossing your eyes until the parts overlap.
- DiFosfor, on 03/14/2008, -1/+2Yes, but then the illusion of depth is inverted, so things look quite different.
- DephexTwin, on 03/14/2008, -2/+1Wow, do you mean that there is a way to do magic eyes so that the image actually seems to come towards you, instead of looking like a cutout going inwards? I did not know this.
- insertAliasHere, on 03/14/2008, -0/+1@DephexTwin
Yeah, you have to unfocus your eyes, not cross them. "Looking past" the pic. It's like your eyes are focused on a point a few feet back from it.
- Hoogs, on 03/14/2008, -0/+1Just "split" the image until two of the same words in a line overlap, then get it in focus. There really is no easy way to explain it.
- Spuy767, on 03/14/2008, -1/+1I can see it, but the plasma that I'm using as a monitor at work is making it really difficult to figure out what it is.

- Wiini, on 03/14/2008, -5/+7I'd really like to know which piece of software he used to create a text-based one. I've seen a lot of them that just use stock colors or images... but nothing that does text only.
- aywwts4, on 03/14/2008, -0/+2He simply repeats the text twice, look for both occurrences of each word on each line, I'm sure all words must be equidistant from each other, which isn't hard if you use a monotype font like courier. count how many charecters they are apart since this seems to work well, write your text in the correct places, fill in the rest with spaces, then turn on the insert key and write your gibberish words, making sure they all fit, I would do one on digg, but this isnt a monotype font, and that would probably be a bitch to do.
- aywwts4, on 03/14/2008, -0/+3I was wrong, He repeats it multiple times (in this instance 5-6 times) Also the distance should be counted from the start of the word, not the end of it, as the distance would be different between wasting and time, count from the start of the word. he used 15 charecters including the 3D word itself, and then the background is also a looping string of text.
- xB4R7x, on 03/14/2008, -0/+0the words right after the magic words are also missing their first letter... might have something to do with it.

- Lokishot, on 03/14/2008, -0/+1Holy snap! first time I see a magic eye.
- ciram, on 03/14/2008, -0/+1No, really... it really does say that... no sailboat...
- Guroom, on 03/14/2008, -4/+14No idea why you were dugg down?!?! because it says just that!
- bagelpirate, on 03/14/2008, -8/+30its a sailboat
- bingobongony, on 03/14/2008, -8/+6jokes been done. Wasn't particualrly funny the first time.

- amr05h, on 03/14/2008, -6/+3fag example, beautiful.
- yahoofrom, on 03/14/2008, -14/+8stop wasting your time and get a life.
- icculus87, on 03/14/2008, -3/+171I've never been able to see a magic eye. I think that they are some sort of universal joke that everyone is in on except me.
- somedirtbag, on 03/14/2008, -1/+7Don't worry. Even Willam eventually saw the sailboat.
- joot2112, on 03/14/2008, -0/+6People who strongly favor one eye can have a hard time seeing them. To find out if this is why you can't see them, hold a finger up about halfway between your face and your computer screen. Look past the finger and focus on the computer screen -- do you see 2 fingers? If you only see one finger, or if one is much better defined than the other, you may favor one eye too much to do the Magic Eye. Close each eye one at a time to find out which.
- GibitStylin, on 03/14/2008, -1/+6im gonna have to agree, i cant do these things, im stupid, digg me down :(
- yeti22, on 03/14/2008, -0/+1It's ok, my friend Jeff from high school was blind in one eye, so he couldn't see magic eyes either. In the end, the only thing they really accomplish is producing headaches. You're not missing that much.
- madbadger, on 03/14/2008, -0/+1I consider myself a decent Magic Eye reader, but this one was pretty difficult to see. Practice on some easier ones first at http://www.magiceye.com/3dfun/stwkdisp.shtml .
- rmeddy, on 03/15/2008, -0/+1Me too brother.
- biff198, on 03/14/2008, -0/+2Another popular method people use to view these is to get very close to the image, then focus on something behind it (like the wall behind your computer). Keep your eyes focused in this way while you slowly back away from the screen, and it should pop out.
- jaewon223, on 03/14/2008, -0/+1great it worked thank you!
- FunkyLlama, on 03/14/2008, -0/+1If you can't cross your eyes enough, try increasing your resolution - it makes the text smaller so you don't have to move your eyes as much.

http://jordanbalagot.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2 ... - Turop, on 03/14/2008, -0/+0Try to see your reflection in the screen within the image.
- mirrorguy, on 03/15/2008, -5/+0I've optimized the image so it only takes a few seconds to see the sailboat.
See here if you still haven't seen it: http://i32.tinypic.com/sqgjsk.gif
You MUST look very closely and cross your eyes.
- Lith25, on 03/14/2008, -1/+20The way I look at these is I cross my eyes, then while staring into the back of the screen, adjust your eyes back to normal until something pops out. It kind of looks like two layers.
- wsuBobby, on 03/14/2008, -52/+14Spoiler alert!
It says: "stop wasting your time" and "get a life" in two seperate blocks.- monsieurgrand02, on 03/14/2008, -12/+5Why the hell would you say Spoiler and then give it away in the same comment. Dumbass...
- wsuBobby, on 03/14/2008, -4/+3It's an alert *****
- drakenlot, on 03/14/2008, -2/+2Because digg doesn't have spoiler tags.

- antiorblkflag9, on 03/14/2008, -0/+4Same here
- monsieurgrand02, on 03/14/2008, -0/+5This one took me quite some time to see. Now my eyes hurt like hell.
- CalamariAce, on 03/14/2008, -2/+3I think they're harder to do if you're looking at it on a flatscreen LCD but maybe I'm just rusty.
- BWAL314, on 03/14/2008, -0/+3You're rusty...not hard at all on my LCD
- cruzlee, on 03/14/2008, -1/+17People with a lazy eye, like me, stand no chance of ever seeing this. I don't see 3D, instead my brain estimates distance based on other things. It's a bitch.
- BaronVonZ, on 03/14/2008, -0/+8is that why I've never been able to figure these bastards out?!
- AppSpec, on 03/14/2008, -0/+1Same here! No wonder I've never been able to see these damn things! Thanks for pointing that out.
- BWAL314, on 03/14/2008, -3/+2You have a lazy eye? Did you get hit in the head with a football like Stuart Scott?
- GlitchEnzo, on 03/14/2008, -0/+3I have a lazy eye and I find that it helps greatly. I simply let my eye drift and the 3D image pops out.
- thepeskyhuman, on 03/15/2008, -0/+0Yeah. Many years of frustration at those 3D picture books that I could never see. =[
- PaulOwen, on 03/14/2008, -2/+5Yeah - just do what I do - make something up (see my previous comments on this thread). Because the interpretation is completely subjective, you can call it a giraffe, monkey wrench, Ferrari, whatever ...
- Rem1nDer, on 03/14/2008, -1/+3It's a volcano!
- kahsoon, on 03/14/2008, -5/+1This kind of illusion is pretty easy. I bought a book with about 300 pages all of them are hidden 3d pictures like this one. All you have to do is look far into the white spacing in between the words until all the words stick together. The easy way is doing cross eye.
- AL7AIR, on 03/14/2008, -0/+3There is another way: Instead of starring behind the picture, which doesn't work for everybody, get a pencil or another pointy object and position yourself and the pencil in a direct line infront of the magic eye image while holding the pencil at half the distance. Now focus on the pencil's tip, and adjust distance of the pencil if necessary to achieve "a second focus" in the background where your "cross eye vision" hits the image. Some people get it quicker this way, then doing cross eye alone.
I didn't make this up, it's one of the described methods in a magic eye book I own. - Nuggstein, on 03/14/2008, -0/+2Aww. I can never do these. Ever. Urg.
- TomT223, on 03/14/2008, -1/+1Me neither but I heard it helps if your gay.
- artmaster, on 03/14/2008, -0/+1I've got a tip...if you were glasses, take them off! It seemed to work better without them. I seriously tried for 15 minutes with them on to no success. Just look cross-eyed an inch from the screen and slowly pull away, eventually straightening your eyes & both phrases will pop up.
- ophello, on 03/15/2008, -0/+1Ever cross your eyes? Do the opposite of that.
- blagoaw, on 04/25/2008, -0/+0It's fun to turn things like this around a bit and consider that you never work for them. I guess that probably doesn't make you feel better. I'm sorry. It's a schooner.
- xadious, on 03/14/2008, -0/+13Likewise!
- SnowflakePillow, on 03/14/2008, -12/+6I got it to work, but I only saw to bars on the side and two dots in the middle...
- nighthawk8713, on 03/14/2008, -0/+13Read the text in the "dots".
- johnn11238, on 03/14/2008, -0/+4Umm..then you DIDN'T get it to work.
- shadus, on 03/14/2008, -1/+19That is the *best* magic eye ever. I think those things are lame generally, text on text is brilliant though.
- JoCoProductions, on 03/14/2008, -8/+330Everyone that does not understand this needs to stop wasting your time and get a life.
- greenmande, on 03/14/2008, -10/+1Thank you... i dont think anybody actually realizes what this magic eye says
- Miketwo345, on 03/14/2008, -4/+11I see what you did there.
- DrMonkeyLove, on 03/14/2008, -0/+9I don't, because I'm still cross-eyed from looking at the damn magic eye!
- drizzlelicious, on 03/14/2008, -7/+2People that do understand this still need to stop wasting their time and get a life
- Gamer2k4, on 03/14/2008, -6/+1Am I the only one that's offended by the creator's assumptions that people who enjoy magic eye pictures don't have a life? And if it was real, how would the 5 seconds it would have taken to see it been a waste of time?
- starphish, on 03/14/2008, -0/+0His comment was clue.
- Gamer2k4, on 03/16/2008, -0/+1I was referring to the creator of the magic eye, not the author of the comment I was replying to. Who calls authors "creators" anyway?
- starphish, on 03/14/2008, -0/+0His comment was clue.

Sorta reminds me of high school when all the cool kids talk about parties and sex, while I listened in confusion. - mag4mag, on 03/14/2008, -0/+4Print it > Put the paper literally in-front of your eyes > slowly back it up > some text will pop up
- Frou, on 03/14/2008, -0/+4Okay that might be what it is for me. I can do this ***** instantly but on the computer monitor it's hard as ***** man. Also what I notice is... I get it to pop out but I can never identify what I'm looking at.
- fishbert, on 03/14/2008, -0/+4you have to look past the paper -- relax your eyes and let your focus drift behind the words, like you're "staring off into space," as the phrase goes.
- sigginike90, on 03/14/2008, -0/+1I don't really get it, i just see like a bunch of Rs or something :S That is to say when the eyes start to focus on the whitespace in between the text.
- Garbagio, on 03/14/2008, -0/+2Yeah, I can see the repeated patterns of the spaces between the words, but it looks like it's just copied 5 times. I can never seem to discern a recognizable single object in these things :
- Mist0r_Wiggles, on 03/14/2008, -0/+45don't feel bad, I don't get it either.must be an inside joke.
- pseudononymist, on 03/14/2008, -0/+12Any game developers working on doing this ***** with moving images? I'd love trying to play a game with graphics taking advantage of this phenomenon, even though it would probably blind me.

- mduke, on 03/14/2008, -1/+4actually yes there is http://www.leweyg.com/download/SIRD/q2/index.html
Its a magic eye mod for quake 2 called abSIRD, it was on slashdot a couple years ago or so. I remember playing it and it works great, but you only see the shape of objects and distances; as in no color, shading, or details. There also a pong game on the same site using similar stuff.
Very hard to maintain the effect while keeping everything in focus and moving.... - aquadoctorbob, on 03/14/2008, -0/+4If you've got Garry's Mod, open up the console and enter "pp_stereoscopy 1". It's trippy.

- pseudononymist, on 03/14/2008, -1/+1also, I'm curious far back can you guys go from the screen and still maintain the 3d effect? I got to about four feet I think, but by then my near-sightedness made the text too blurry anyway.
- RedStarRizing, on 03/14/2008, -2/+2youre near sighted and you can see it? ***** me, i fail
- spincrisis, on 03/14/2008, -0/+0If I do it with diverging vision I can get about four or five feet away before the text disappears. If I do it with converging vision I can't get more than a few inches away from the screen. If I make the text larger I can do better with both methods.
- cerealjynx, on 03/14/2008, -1/+17Argh my stupid brain keeps not wanting it to happen and focusing on individual words. D:

the real heart pounder are "look carefully" pics WITH SOUND!- blagoaw, on 04/25/2008, -0/+0I had headphones on and nearly flew out of my chair when that happened to me. It's the kind of prank that's a lot funnier if you're actually present and showing it to a friend (maybe then people could even make sure they're not going to blow out peoples' ears). When put online for people in all circumstances, it's sort of sick.

- Akraz, on 03/14/2008, -7/+1stop wasting your time. get a life.
When i was a kid, i had these books with just pics like these, and images popped out when you crossed your eyes. its fun- spamspanker123, on 03/14/2008, -1/+0But the images pop up inverted... weird.
- da_bradler, on 03/14/2008, -0/+1I think you're just dyslexic.
- Akraz, on 03/14/2008, -0/+1Yeah, digg me down cause I said I had a book of magic-eye pics when i was kid. That makes real sense, you must all be jealous then?
Sometimes, the logic behind being dugg and buried is illogical.- Anifanatic, on 03/14/2008, -0/+0You got dugg down for making a stupid comment (and no, people aren't "jealous" because you had Magic Eye books, that's where the term came from. Everyone knows what a Magic Eye is, otherwise you'd see every response saying "I don't get it, it's a wall of text") and stating the obvious (that this is a Magic Eye).
- spamspanker123, on 03/14/2008, -1/+0But the images pop up inverted... weird.
- SeventhSon, on 03/14/2008, -3/+16I can't help but think that the entire magic eye business is really just an elaborate scam of random squiggles designed to make me look like a fool.
- ThorsSon, on 03/14/2008, -1/+6No, they really work.
See you stare at them long enough to get frustrated, then you stare some more, and get more frustrated that you have not seen the image. Eventually, you begin slamming your head into a wall until you begin to hallucinate... then you see the pretty 3D image.
At least, that is how they work for me.- rafor, on 03/14/2008, -2/+3More like you are frustrated that can't see the image after 3 hours of looking, your eyes are so tired and you so ***** your eyes cross. This suddenly allows you to see the image.
Stupidly, you perk up and try to pay attention while you still can and...the image disappears.
Thus, you spend the next 8 hours trying to make the image reappear.
- rafor, on 03/14/2008, -2/+3More like you are frustrated that can't see the image after 3 hours of looking, your eyes are so tired and you so ***** your eyes cross. This suddenly allows you to see the image.
- craigyjack, on 03/14/2008, -4/+2just differentiate each eye's vision. each of your eyes sees a different picture (field of view) (test it but closing each eye alternately and see how everything shifts). Your brain has a mechanism to combine the two fields of view together to make one. You have to not do that mechanism and separate the fields. everything will be spread apart and the magic eyes images will come together and pop out. you may have to work on getting your brain not to combine your eyes. i've always been able to do it at will - i actually do it accidentally alot if im staring at something for a short periods of time. i like making people have 3 eyes by doing it :)
- yoshitomi, on 03/14/2008, -0/+2what the hell are you on about?
- Jeeum, on 03/14/2008, -0/+2I love reading people's nonsensical attempts to explain how to see these things.
- ThorsSon, on 03/14/2008, -1/+6No, they really work.
- chromerium, on 03/14/2008, -2/+3Love it - I was looking at it hoping to see some cool shape then the aformentioned words popped out and I laughed my arse off. Printing that sucker out.

- craigyjack, on 03/14/2008, -4/+1just differentiate each eye's vision. each of your eyes sees a different picture (field of view) (test it but closing each eye alternately and see how everything shifts). Your brain has a mechanism to combine the two fields of view together to make one. You have to not do that mechanism and separate the fields. everything will be spread apart and the magic eyes images will come together and pop out. you may have to work on getting your brain not to combine your eyes. many people try to get the mechanism to stop combining by slowing moving their head away from close to farther out away from the image yes. but it is not required if you learn to separate your eyes' visions yourself
- meridian300, on 03/14/2008, -0/+1Just cross your eyes and slowly slide them back to normal, works for me...

- MrSwap, on 03/14/2008, -3/+4I can always resolve the stereoscopic image, but I can never make out what's in the picture.
- Syric, on 03/14/2008, -0/+1You might not be doing it enough, or too much perhaps.
- Danthekilla, on 03/14/2008, -3/+3i like magic :)

- lordelph, on 03/14/2008, -2/+5I figured it couldn't possibly be a magic eye image, but I gave it thirty seconds.
Thats incredible.
And funny. - jaymulder, on 03/14/2008, -6/+1It's a .gif. It loaded then I lost interest. From the comments it seems I made the right decision.
- str3ama, on 03/14/2008, -9/+3I hate these things. I have a book of these crazy magic eye things and I've yet to ever see anything from them.. either there's a trick to seeing it ..or the entire thing is based on gullible people are..
- JupiterSSJ4, on 03/14/2008, -1/+1you cross your eyes until the words or symbols that are repeating cross over one another, then it shows up. Or, the way that beginners do it, put your nose on it and slowly pull it away, it should naturally cross your eyes and make you see it
- jaalin, on 03/14/2008, -1/+1crossing your eyes in the traditional ( o)(o ) sense gives you the reverse/negative image, where everything is sunken. the idea is to un-cross them... (o )( o)
the trick you mention does help in crossing the eyes in the correct direction, but there is the possibility of going too far - it's possible to double-cross, etc.
the way i learned to do them was from a magic eye book with a glossy cover - look at the glossy reflection, and not the actual image. once you get the hang of it you should be able to see any of them within 1 or 2 seconds- Cheeseness, on 03/14/2008, -0/+1;_;
I only see boobies. - Jeeum, on 03/14/2008, -0/+1Double cross!! LOL

- Driv300mph, on 03/14/2008, -2/+4How is this made?!?!? I literally don't see how this can happen since there isn't a difference between the words that appear and the others.
- misterjangles, on 03/14/2008, -1/+2it's based on distance between two of the same image and tricking your eyes into focusing on them in a way that your brain perceives it as one single image with depth rather than two separate images. this text one is just based off of the same words spaced apart a certain distance.
- da_bradler, on 03/14/2008, -1/+1that's why it's called a MAGIC eye
- aladrin, on 03/14/2008, -0/+2It's the not popup words that are different, it's the words around them. There's a letter missing or extra on each size of the words around them... Because the end up still being words, you don't process them as 'wrong' and don't notice them unless you know what to look for.
I wrote a Magic Eye generator long, long ago, so I knew exactly what to look for. I'm now considering how to do a text one... - blagoaw, on 04/25/2008, -0/+0I accidentally stumbled upon stereographic effects when I wrote a program that printed letters with spacing in mathematical patterns like parabolas. It does have to do with the horizontal distance between identical things. Yes, I'm a sad geek.
- bigfrank06, on 03/14/2008, -8/+3Yr wastin yr time, u can haz life?
- styler5, on 03/14/2008, -5/+3i can never do this *****. i just end up hurting my eyes
- lyssword, on 03/14/2008, -8/+3fail
- Larz0rz, on 03/14/2008, -5/+3It'd be better if the words didn't pop up, and people would just stare at it forever, eventually read it, and finally find them within the text.
- BlogCrawler, on 03/14/2008, -9/+2Don't waster your time. Get a life.
