  • paidhima, on 08/30/2008, -0/+5With all other variables being equal, it is possible that a glass ball may bounce higher than a rubber ball. As the rubber ball is softer, more energy is lost when the ball strikes a surface and deforms, so less energy is available to make the ball bounce back. A glass ball is much harder and denser, and does not deform. Provided the glass ball doesn't shatter, a potentially greater portion of energy will be retained by the glass and so the glass bounces higher.

    That being said, many rubber balls are composed of compounds designed to maximize the return on energy. Those super high bounce balls, for example. Most rubber balls these days, unless they are designed to absorb energy as opposed to returning it, will bounce higher than glass.
