- blueribbie, on 10/11/2007, -3/+33Very well said. I paid money to XM because it was supposed to be a place free from censorship. There is plenty of content on XM that I don't agree with; so I don't listen to those channels.
I am cancelling my subscription because XM has shown that they are no different than the watered down dreck available on FM. - mykos, on 10/11/2007, -4/+25I usually roll my eyes at a lot of consumerist articles, but this one has merit.
- bmt8, on 10/11/2007, -4/+23RAAAMOOOOONE BRING THIS ***** COMPANY A SPINE SO THEY CAN SUPPORT THEIR CUSTOMERS
- beakermd, on 10/11/2007, -2/+20I'm the same. I had to cancel. What they did and will do just isn't right.
How about the last three episodes of the Sopranos be edited and full of bleeps? - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+15I don't agree with the topic at all... "Satellite radio is a hot mess!" needs to be replaced with "XM Satellite Radio...", because at this point Sirius is doing everything right while XM is on the decline. Sirius is STILL without ad's on music channels, while XM has commercial music channels. Sirius is truly uncensored, while O&A are being suspended/fired from XM. Just compare the two's subscription rates since Stern went to Sirius. As much as he is hated, the numbers show a huge difference between the two since he moved there.
PS: As a VERY happy Sirius subscriber I am very much so dreading the merger. I had XM originally and changed to Sirius and would not want to lose any of the stuff on Sirius which I mostly prefer to XM. The only thing I really like about XM is them having MLB coverage but thats about it! - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -6/+16I'm sure they don't care.
- dan0368, on 10/11/2007, -6/+16Great letter, I couldn't agree more.
Down with XM! - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10It is like Roughly Drafted last year. They had 6-7 guys create 8-10 accounts each. As a result, every RDM submission IMMEDIATELY got 30-40 Diggs when it first came up. It was very obvious. Most submissions would get 4-5 Diggs in the first 15 minutes. RDM ones would get 30. EVERY time.
Granted,Consumerist learned from RDM's mistakes are aren't THAT blatant, but all it takes it a look at the WHO DUGG THIS list, and go back to the last page where the earliest Diggs are to see that the same exactly accoutns are digging EVERY Consumerist article before it gets a chance to be dugg by others. (In other words, they are finding Consumerist submissions suspiciously quickly)
And of course, comments like this get buried too. Because with all those accounts, they noit only control the front page, but they control comments too. They know that most people don't bother to open up buried comments. So all they have to do is give 4-5 negative votes to a comment critical of them and most people will not see it.
WE managed to get Roughly Drafted banned after burying them enough. For the sake of Digg, we need to do the same with Consumerist. The only problem is, the people who work at Consumerist would sponge off the tax payers through welfare because none of htem have ANY job skills whatsoever. So they HAVE to sponge off Digg. - adinb, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8one more cancellation. I paid for uncensored content; I don't care if O&A were making fun of the CEO of XM or making fun of insincere apologies they were strongarmed into making. As far as I'm concerned, they're in breach of contract for false advertising.
- euphemizeme, on 10/11/2007, -3/+11I thought I was the only one who saw this. I've called out The Consumerist many times on this, but nobody seems to notice.
The problem with Digg is that once a site games it and gets a few diggs, the masses just click the digg button without much thought. People see something has been dugg several times, so they assume there's a good reason and follow suit without actually looking at the article. Hence, gaming digg is easier than one might think. - davidrools, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7I'm proud of people who care about this issue who actually do cancel their XM subscriptions. A lot of times people will talk the talk but not back it up. For instance, if we really all canceled our internet service subscriptions as soon as they started blocking P2P, they would notice...but no customers can actually stand to be without the internet for a day.
- RAiNsTorm, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8XM has lost me as a customer for life. And for those who think this is just an O&A thing, you are dead wrong, this is about censorship and a very bad precedent for this country is being set these days. With the government censoring websites our armed forces can access, and comedians losing their jobs over "offenses" so minor that they do not even break FCC rules, we are coming closer and closer to the type of censorship countries like China imposes. This is a true shame and the ramifications will be felt down the road.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -5/+11Wow...ANOTHER front page story that was just reworded slightly by Consumerist and then resubmitted, and dugg of hte front page by their minions.
Again, make no mistake about it. Consumerist OWNS Digg. They have absolute complete control over the front page. With all the multiple accounts that they have, any story they want will get to the front page, and any story they DON'T want will get buried fast. Sorry KEvin Rose, you have lost control of your site. - AeonTorpor, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5If you work at a major retailer like I do and you make your job to push away from xm, then yeah, I'm sure they might. Don't piss customers off, it usually ends up bad.
That being said... I don't listen to that show, but even so, I don't think they should censor it. There's a reason people pay a monthly fee for it. - Aero1, on 10/11/2007, -5/+10Thank you sir!
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6For an Adult only channel and that the fact that I pay for it I expect for it to be racy and have content that is well worth it.
It's not like they used the N word or even anything extreme, XM will learn from this hopefully.
Either way I only listen to O&A about once a month. MLB Play by Play and 80s on 8 for me - davidrools, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Yeah that would be convenient if XM happened to just "go out of business" only to be "liquidated" and bought up by another company interested in its assets.
- tdmoney, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5uh maybe these stations?

I mean, I guess if you want to look at it that way. They agreed not to discuss the topic anymore. Not only did the boys bring it back up but they argued that the standards they are held to don't align. I've heard all three episodes - the comments, the apology and the revisit - I don't think their apology was any less sincere based upon their thoughts this week. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I canceled my subscription about a month back because the xm radio in my car was failing, and I didn't want to pay to fix it. I saw it as an opportunity to get rid of yet another monthly bill.
The interesting part about the cancellation is that, in an effort to retain my business, the guy offered to cut my subscription cost in half. I would have probably took him up on that offer if it weren't for my broke-dick radio.
So for all of you subscribers, call and attempt to cancel, and then get the rep to cut your bill in half. - DigitalN, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5for some of us with Sirius, what the hell is that from?
- Deathshead1941, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4"I invented unborn fetuses and vacant vehicles, HOO HOO HOO Tell em Fred."
- damndj, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Zero...point.....zero.........
- FrankieB078, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5I am not sure if many people know this, but Clear Channel plays a big part in the things over at XM radio (including being responsible for programming AND commercials on some of the music channels), and I wouldn't put it past me that some of the "shareholders" were "upset" about this and wanted action on O&A.
Things are getting retarded at XM. There will never be a merger simply because XM doesn't know what the ***** they're doing. - trouble916, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I'll say it again. Anyone who has Sirius or even HBO needs to support this cause now. It's like a legal precedent... when Al Sharpton or whoever comes to complain about Howard or Sopranos, you'll be screaming then won't you? Howard should be ashamed for not taking a stand as he has been victimized for years by anti-free speech advocates.
Censorship in any form (and this is not a first amendment issue) is bad for the consumer. You, I take it, are a consumer of something. Try standing up now before it's too late. [queue dramatic music] - tendonut, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6@davidrools
This happens to be a case of the little guy absorbing the big guy. XM still has a few million more subscriptions than Sirius, and they don't have to pay out $500,000,000 for a self-centered washed up shock jock (who DID invent the genre, I will give him that). So for anyone who wants to say XM sucks, just look at the stock market trends, and try the ***** service. Don't just take Howie's word for it. He despises O&A and will do anything to make them disappear, despite all his ranting and raving about not caring about them. In a worse case scenario, XM and Sirius are equals.
Anyone who says Opie and Anthony are not Stern imitators are just lying to themselves. But all because you imitate something, doesn't mean you are not better than what you are imitating. I prefer the knock-off brand corn flakes more than Kellogg's. I listened to both shows back on the WNEW days, but always preferred O&A. When the b-b-b-boys came back to XM, I still listened to both shows. But when Stern went to Sirius, I didn't care enough about that show to follow. I'll stick to my XM, thank you very much. There was a good non-biased comparison done about 6 months ago between XM and Sirus. I suggest you search for it.
Also, I have a feeling this 30 day suspension will never last if this many people are outraged about it, including me. Yes, they are not XM's biggest money maker, but a pretty big chunk of their listeners are probably not happy about this. They don't believe that O&A = XM. XM has enough great content that they don't need to whore themselves out to one shock jock, but can promote other advantages. This is why not as many people seem to know that Opie and Anthony are even ON XM. They never have really advertised them, even on day one. Sirius got REAL desperate when they started that, and it seems to have partially paid off. But Stern is not turning up the subscribers they hoped, and will be in some big trouble down the line if this merge doesn't go through. - tendonut, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5Didn't they get fired from WNEW when they were the top afternoon drive show in the COUNTRY?
They were DEFINITELY money makers for XM, and remain to be. Howie has been brainwashing his zombie fanbase into thinking O&A were struggling, but it's FAR from true. I wish I could find that damn ratings site I found back in March..god damnit - domelogic, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6gee i wonder where you heard that from? if you are going to steal from howard at least give him credit
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2You pay for basic cable too, and get commercials.
- Enfenestrate, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I like a lot of the channels that they have. The variety is great, as far as I'm concerned.
I don't like how the number of commercials seems to be trending upwards; there's far more in the way of commercials than there was when I joined a few years back. Also, the top 40-esque stations use the same radio-edit versions of songs that terrestrial radio uses, so those channels on XM are really no different from traditional top 40 stations, with the censored songs and the commercials. - euphemizeme, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5Troll.
- rabidmonkey1, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2we need country-wide freely broadcasted hi-speed wi-fi...
...so that we can all tune our in-dash computers to PANDORA.com! - danc4498, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I think the worst part of all this is that nobody was calling for O&A to be fired! There weren't any special interest groups complaining to XM or going to their sponsors. As a matter of fact, this wasn't even big news until XM forced them to apologize for what they said.
This whole situation has escalated because XM is a bunch of pussies and are afraid something will happen because O&A did what they did. They've only ***** themselves over for being pussies about the whole situation (09-f9-11-02-9d-74-e3-5b-d8-41-56-c5-63-56-88-c0 anybody?) - threemagic, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Dude, if they quit they are defaulting on their contract. I would bet they'd have to pay back everything and given they both upped their style of living, I would say they really couldn't. Well, they could but I don't see anything is wrong with it if they don't.
- threemagic, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I had the same issue except they gave me the service for free for 3 months and a radio...the service for free for 3 months was to pay for the installation.
But that was only 2 months ago and now I canceled.
No one censors what I pay to listen to. I control the contact.. not the owner!
Cable once pulled a Ultimate Fighting PPV from the PPV lineup (wouldn't let anyone buy it). So I canceled that too. - tdmoney, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2http://digg.com/business_finance/The_Opie_and_Anthony_Suspension_Could_Hurt_XM_s_Quarterly_Results
interesting article from fool.com - dogearedboy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Yeah, the 1st Amendment doesn't cover you for libel and slander.
First of all, libel is in printed media. So that isn't covered here.
They didn't slander anybody. The comments they made in no way defamed the character of anyone.
AND, they didn't threaten anyone. So this isn't "yelling fire in a crowded theater."
Although most would consider what they said tasteless, the 1st Amendment does cover that. You have a right to be tasteless and rude, and obnoxious. You do not have a right to not be made fun of or have your feelings hurt.
God Bless America! - Plunkies, on 10/11/2007, -9/+10XM is dead to me.
- chris4404, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1So what are you ex-XM owners doing? Terrestrial Radio or Sirius?
- Muyoso, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I canceled my XM radio. All I will do now is download the shows from torrentspy at 3 pm everyday.
- AARGH2K, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12x XM subscriber, not ticked, not cancelling. As a consumer you have a right to cancel, but XM has the right to fire their employees, as they see fit.
- kn0xy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Eh, Squizz wasn't that greatly lately, and I really do not give a ***** to toss my earned coin to hypocritical ***** that would rather waste their time and talent playing grab ass with politicians than make sure there is content worth listening to, more matter how un-'P.C.' it is.
- AmnestyGenocide, on 10/11/2007, -4/+5I be one of them .
Hoo hoo was on the radio today saying that he would have never apologized if he said something along the lines of what was aired on O & A because he has billions and billions of subscribers and the management wouldn't have pressured him to do so.
It's amazing, first Howie invents inventing *****, then he gets subscriptions to Sirius from unborn foetuses and vacant vehicles. Man, I wish I could see him and how lonely he's going to be when he's on his deathbed. Even if he has 10% of his zillions of fans by his bedside, he's still going to be one of the loneliest people in the hospital. You know the one with the x-ray machines and CT scanners that he invented after he got back from inventing the Vietnamese and then single-handedly deciding to not beat them in that war he started. - Deathshead1941, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I want an apology for the apology......
Call Xm Radio, get a Rep from AMERICA on the phone, do not stop calling, Cancel your subs people and stand up to this *****. If we do not stand up for whats right then the only entertainment will have to be approved by Al ***** sharpton first.
Btw "Does anyone remember laughter?" - socialidiocy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1What am I supposed to do with my factory installed XM receiver that came with my car? If only I had chosen a car with Sirius..
- Ryokurin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1@tendonut
The difference in commercial free channels is actually 1 channel now. - aiken, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1An interesting read, but you have to take anything on Consumerist with a huge grain of salt. The bloggers (and most of the readers) are so rabidly anti-corporate that accuracy and perspective aren't even remotely a priority. When Costco.com erroneously listed some autographed guitar that their supplier only had one of, Consumerist's headline was "Costco caught selling fake autographed guitars." That's pretty much par for the course over there; a company could eliminate world hunger overnight and Consumerist would frame it as promoting obesity.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1the commercials are not benefiting the cable companies. they're paying the bills of the syndicated networks. cable companies simply take an over-the-air signal over satellite, capture it, purify it, and pump it out over solid wire that provides a solid, reliable signal to the end user. commercials allow the networks (abc, nbc, cbs, fox, etc.) to stay on the air and to keep providing the programming that they do.
- harrybozack, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Usenet has commercial free mp3's, just itching to be loaded on an iPod. (I have an Inno, but XM is worthless to me now)

What is Digg?
