- TEHxINTERWEBS, on 05/20/2008, -13/+103Colbert > Anything and everyone that has ever existed.
/discussion - zeitgueist, on 05/20/2008, -0/+82Dugg for talking about the Whitehouse Correspondents Dinner in 2006. That ***** was the ballsiest comedy performance I've ever seen.
- roflbrothel, on 05/20/2008, -1/+49Hi, I'm here as a representative from the state of Obvious. I believe that this was a satire piece and the title was a Bush joke. Don't bother thanking me, I know you're grateful, and you're quite welcome.
-Roflbrothel, emissary of Obvious - PolarBearCa, on 05/20/2008, -2/+36Intentionally pretending to be an idiot and succeeding vs. trying not to be an idiot and failing are two very different things.
Calling Colbert an idiot for his character on the show is a compliment, the way I see it. - Versh, on 05/20/2008, -0/+32The Colbert Report is perhaps the most important and funniest show on television. Though the Daily Show is excellent, here's how it falls short:
-Sometimes (more often than usual) the guests on The Daily Show are just celebrities making their rounds on the press junket. Colbert Report does not (well, not nearly as much).
- The best part of The Daily Show are the Headlines with Jon Stewart leaving the rest to a limited range of segments, leaving a majority of the show depending on hit-or-miss correspondence pieces and the second half's interview. Colbert has the Threat Down, The Word, Better Know a District, Tek Jansen, On Notice, Colbert Platinum, etc. etc.
- Stephen Colbert addresses philosophical implications of the news, often making multiple references to psychology, literary theory, and popular culture. Jon Stewart just makes observational humor, crude impersonations, and points out the irony. Stylistically, both are very funny, there's just more being addressed by Colbert. - funkyloki, on 05/20/2008, -3/+34Nothing to discuss...your logic is perfect.
- dougs55, on 05/20/2008, -0/+31If you can find the video they mentioned it's well worth watching. It's one thing to dis Mr. Bush here, quite another to do it on TV with Mr Bush sitting 10 feet away. I particularly liked the part where Colbert attempted to "defend" from his critics the President by claiming that Truth is over rated.
- crazydiode, on 05/20/2008, -3/+33English motherfu**r, English. do you speak it?
- WriterSD, on 05/20/2008, -2/+31Dugg for the portions of the article that had truthiness.
- leerayIG88, on 05/20/2008, -12/+41Powerful? yes...Idiot? No.
- JonLatane, on 05/20/2008, -0/+28My favorite part of the Colbert Report is meeting conservatives that actually think it's a conservative-oriented version of The Daily Show. I mean, how dense can you really be?
- pintomp3, on 05/20/2008, -0/+27as well as their perspective of fox news:
"The show's titular host offers a funhouse-mirror reflection of the bellicose Right-wing opinionisers of Rupert Murdoch's Fox News channel (among others) who dominate and dictate the political discourse in the States with lengthy and obnoxious opinion-slots that are somehow passed off as 'news'" - TheCash, on 05/20/2008, -15/+39Man, and I thought our news here in the US was biased. I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be a feature piece, but it reads like an Op-Ed story, as the author doesn't miss a single opportunity to inject his personal viewpoint throughout. I love Cobert, but this writer is way more in love with his own wit then he should be.
- frelk, on 05/20/2008, -1/+25Didn't Fox News try to do a conservative version of the Daily Show but nobody watched it, it wasn't funny, and they didn't always make it totally clear that it was a fake news show? Maybe that's why.
- gaffer13, on 05/20/2008, -3/+26Very in-depth article and agreed with spillreviews that it's interesting to get a European perspective. At the end of the day, Colbert says a lot of things - some very true, some not...but all entertaining.
- Konrad9, on 05/20/2008, -0/+22I can't believe he warns them so completely and yet they act so incredibly stupid most of the time.
- Drazzim12, on 05/20/2008, -0/+21Really? Poorly written?
- WELLDOITLIVE, on 05/20/2008, -1/+21It's hard to say this for sure, but I'm pretty confident I'd like Stephen Colbert no matter what country I was from.
Excluding Turkmenistan. - Klitzy, on 05/20/2008, -1/+20I hear he goes to digg.com.....
*Joking* - divrekku, on 05/20/2008, -0/+16better then the "If you don't agree with me, you're unpatriotic and probably a terrorist" rallying cry of the White House for the past 7 years.
- Aspiringfinch, on 05/20/2008, -0/+16Rainnnnnnnnn
- bjstiktrix, on 05/20/2008, -0/+14PAPA BEAR BILL is not acting!
- mysedai, on 05/20/2008, -1/+13Stephen Colbert is the alpha-geek.
He got to light-saber duel George Lucas and he played Dungeons and Dragons with Gary Gygax at GenCon oh so many years ago.
He is my hero. - filth, on 05/20/2008, -0/+12I've found that RTFA can really help.
- yohnstoppable, on 05/20/2008, -0/+11That performance made me a fan. I had seen him on the dailyshow, and knew he was funny. But I never really watched the colbert report, and figured it would just be a daily show 2. I thought they were just milking the success of the daily show. But man, that speech is one of the greatest comedic performances of our generation. It will take a LOT to top it. And with the president right there. I'd piss my pants in that situation
- DarthTurducken, on 05/20/2008, -0/+11Trivia: Colbert does the voices of Phil Ken Sebben and Myron Reducto on the Adult Swim show "Harvey Birdman, Attorney-At-Law"
- yohnstoppable, on 05/20/2008, -0/+11I accept your apology
- brainworms, on 05/20/2008, -0/+11The Daily Show better? Well thats your opinion, can't decide myself. But it seems to me like they work together nearly as one show, in many cases the Daily Show is setting up the jokes for Colbert or at least making the audience aware of the situations first.
(Your list is nearly a profile of the people Colbert makes fun of) - Rage67, on 05/20/2008, -4/+14Go watch fox news
- aComa, on 05/20/2008, -0/+9That ends the end-of-discussion therefore the discussion resumes.
- Pfkninenines, on 05/20/2008, -12/+21For anyone who's asleep - Bush is #1.
That's right. He's winning... - MoofTheStoof, on 05/20/2008, -0/+9I found it amazingly lucid and coherent. Quite enjoyable, in fact.
- Duositex, on 05/20/2008, -1/+10Anyone who watches Colbert and doesn't understand that the entire show is a satire of conservative infotainment is a moron. COLBERT IS A CHARACTER. It's called "acting."
- plutarch, on 05/20/2008, -3/+12You don't "get" comedy, do you?
- Irlande, on 05/20/2008, -0/+8I really wish it was easier to watch the Colbert Report over here in Europe. I know they show The Daily Show on some channels here, but Stewart really is no Colbert....
Ah well, everytime I go State Side I can indulge in the Report. That'll do for now :) - deslock, on 05/20/2008, -1/+9This is soooo true. I have a bunch of friends (Mormons) equally split with liberal and conservatives (I live in Oregon not Utah) and we had this discussion about Colbert and the whole group agreed they loved him, including the conservatives.
I was baffled by the cons and I just kept pushing them about why they like him. They said that they hate John Stewart but liked Colbert because he is more conservative. ????
Crazy cons. They are perfect targets huh? - pintomp3, on 05/20/2008, -1/+9which liberal news networks? msnbc, who is owned by a company that profits from military contracts? you probably still believe in the myth of the liberal media.
- gryphon50, on 05/20/2008, -0/+8that took alot of guts. It was interesting that only Justice Scalia (whom I normally hate!) could laugh at himself.
- mtschmie, on 05/20/2008, -0/+8Swing and a miss...
Who do you think "The Most Powerful Idiot in America" would be? - postalblowfish7, on 05/20/2008, -3/+10i agree to a point, but just about every single colbert interview is someone pushing some lame ***** book. at least john stewart has people on just for the thrill of real (albeit hilarious) debate some times.
- Sasquatch, on 05/20/2008, -0/+7This isn't news, it's from their weekend entertainment magazine
- roflbrothel, on 05/20/2008, -3/+10The pope, obviously.
- enclaved, on 05/20/2008, -0/+7it seems hard to read for him as well.
- petebot, on 05/20/2008, -0/+7He was also one half of the ambiguosly gay duo, with Steve Carrell.
- creepermclurker, on 05/20/2008, -0/+6@ ender7074 and Kannebas
No, sometimes an idiot is just an idiot.
To be clear, I'm not directly referring to ender's being an idiot or his comment being idiotic just the fact that sometimes you can look at an complete failure of an administration (considering how it has effected a majority of its citizens) and surmise the one in charge is an idiot.
Don't kill the messenger. - Eganj, on 05/20/2008, -0/+6Colbert is a comedic genius. Does he have writers? Yes. He also however is heavily involved with the writing. Also, just because someone has writen something funny for you to say doesn't mean you can deliver.
In addition to his commedy skills the guy is building a friggin empire. You have to have a small bit of sense to get to where he is. - inactive, on 05/20/2008, -0/+5It's hard to hear text.
- pintomp3, on 05/20/2008, -0/+5http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_1/2_Hour_News_Hou ...
- sindex, on 05/20/2008, -1/+6All you people making comments about how "Brits (and/or the Telegraph) are the real idiots! He's a comedian" are the real idiots. The fact that it's all a joke is what the whole article is about. Well, that and some childhood biographical stuff. How about you RTFA before exposing your ignorance? Hell, even the blurb at the bottom of the submission says it's satire. Did you not even make it that far?
