You'll be missed old timer... - sockpuppets, on 10/12/2007, -4/+38mikeynolikeyu, welcome to my Christmas ban. What a stupid, racist thing to say.
- PrometheuZ, on 10/12/2007, -1/+32You must be 5yrs old.
- gwinerreniwg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+24I had the pleasure of being backline support for James Brown at his induction to the Rock and Roll hall of fame. He truly was the hardest working man in show business: After a week of rehearsing with bands like Bruce Springsteen, Parliament Funkadelic, The Alman Bros, Booker T, Al Green, and on and on, James Brown and his band took the stage for dress rehearsal at 8PM the night before the show. Their first song was "It's a man's ...world". Standing next to Bob Guccione, we were all eager to see the legend rehearse. No exaggeration here: He literally practiced the first TWO NOTES of the song for 60 minutes. He would count in the band and hit the first note or two, then quit. After 60 minutes, even Bob Guccione was getting impatient. Finally after almost 70 minutes, they ripped into the song. I've never heard a more tight and impressive performance in my lifetime, and that's saying a lot! I've been a fan ever since that moment.
- snoble, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22No sign of disrespect, but recreational drugs will age you awfully quickly.
- webphreak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21Every time I think of James Brown this comes to mind: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jNYSEUOnbPs
GREAT bmw add - praisethelard, on 06/06/2008, -0/+17Just put on the cape and he'll be back.

Time to play some james brown funky drummer =) - scelestus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16R.I.P.
- spencewah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15My dad used to think it was funny to wake me up by blasting his James Brown - Live at the Apollo album. There's nothing like receiving an injection of 100% pure soul to start your day.
Rest in peace, James. - orientis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Sad but true. Look at the legends from the past. Who are we going to think of as the legends of this decade in thirty years? U2? Britney?
Music is dead. Long live music. - quami16, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14its not often that someone comes around who influences a genre so greatly. he'll be missed.
- sockpuppets, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17You've got a 1 in 365 chance of expiring on Christmas too.
- vuke69, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14He may not have been a great man, but he was a great artist.
And despite his flaws, the world is a better place because of his influences.
You had a hell of a run... Thank you. - TRUEPATRIOT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10multiple genres from rock to rap he helped everyone from mosh pits to b-boy circles
- Funfetus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Tonight I went to the bar where my friend was bartending. I told him the news, and after convincing him I wasn't joking, he made the announcement, and poured a shot for everyone in the bar.
RIP, Godfather. - dnegative, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9james brown changed music...period. influenced everyone but never imitated. EPMD's unfinished business wouldn't be a classic. rocky IV wouldn't have an electrifying intro. my parents wouldn't have anything to dance to. even the artists at his time. this truly makes me sad. :0(

You bigoted *****, you are not half the man James Brown was, and you will never be. Take your racist attitude off digg
I hope you die. Go swallow a knife. - TC-14, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Rest In Peace James, we'll playing your albums today in memory of your great soul.
So glad that I saw him live two years ago, he was such a brilliant performer, even at his age he still had the moves and the voice.
You will be greatly missed. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8No he died around 1:43AM today. :(
- Autrix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9With him dies a legacy. There will never be anyone like him again.
- orientis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8You dazzled me with your pointless arrogance.
- sinfree, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Unless, of course, he dies on a leap year. ;) Sorry, I just had to say it.
- Autrix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I meant "era" and more like "end of an era." Poor sentence on my part, I just wanted to post something about it as soon as I read the story. His music really meant a lot to me. I will take more time when posting in future obituary threads, now that I know the vocabulary/grammer police patrol those as well.
- gwinerreniwg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Oh yea, and bitcloud, dugg down on principle for linking to something as perversely non-James-Brown as LA Style. Here's some links to help you really appreciate the man's genius:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5L6N5ciJ8DA&mode=related&search= - Ystig, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Music isn't dead now because U2 and Britney are charting and the real innovators aren't, any more than it was dead at the time of Brown's early work because Pat Boone was topping the charts and the black musicians of whom he was merely a poor copy weren't.
Music which is ahead of its time isn't popular. By definition. That why we call it *ahead of its time*.
There will always be people who declare the death of music, year in and year out, on the basis that popular music is popular. But those who pay attention will always ignore them. - PeTeRZz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8R.I.P
you will be missed. - modiggs1976, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I'm an atheist, but even I have to quote the birthday boy. Judge not lest ye be judged,
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Put an woolen sweater sporting, jazz beard purist in the same room as a hard house, loved-up dance DJ and a soap dodging prog rocker and it can be assumed they're unlikely to share any common ground music wise, with one glaring exception.
The same could be said of any drastically different forces in music - Trent Reznor and Cliff Richard for example - one would repel the other like two giant magnets - until, that is, 'It's a man's world', or 'Turn me loose, let me go, I'm doctor feel good' booms into the room. Faced with the majesty of pure, unadulterated down and dirty funk like that - no one, not even Cliff the spliff is immune.
The corners of your mouth curl up, the tears in your eyes for the sheer joy of his voice well up and before you know what's happening, your feet are moving, your head is bobbing and the purity of musical bliss fills your life once again, courtesy of the last of the great musicians; the last of the generation who mastered their art, to inform and entertain the ears of the world for no other reason than a genuine love for the sound of music.
The funk soul brother lives on, in all of us. Let's take it to the bridge, for James. - cryptocom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Even though James will be missed by millions (perhaps billions?), this doesn't have to be a sad day. Mr. Brown left a long, lively discography for us to enjoy after his departure. Being the kind of guy he was, I'm sure he would want us to put on our favorite song or album of his and get funky, rather than sit around and say RIP all day.
:) - Mardala, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It always sucks seeing such a genius and legend pass on. But his legacy will live on. He was lucky to really live a life doing what he was born to do. RIP James Brown...
- peabody624, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Wow, this is so sad :(
- eeepeeep, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5For those who might not be aware, this is my favorite James Brown moment. Shows that James was much more then simply and entertainer:
Less than 24 hours after Martin Luther King's assassination the city of Boston was in a state of turmoil. When James Brown arrived at the airport to play his already scheduled show he was warned that the mayor, fearing further unrest among the African American community, planned to cancel the show. Brown assured the mayor that the consequences would be much worse if the concert was called off. Not only did the show go on as planned, public television station WGBH broadcast the whole thing. It's an incredible historical document and a fantastic performance by James Brown, who dedicated the show to Dr. King's memory and brought the raw emotions within himself and his community to a searing head. James felt that if people stayed home to watch there would be no rioting. He arranged permission to televise the concert and the city guaranteed the box office receipts. There was no rioting in Boston. At one point the restless crowd swarms the stage and amidst the mayhem James Brown tells the cops to stay back and calmly talks the crowd back into their seats. "This isn't how black people should act."

- blogger1947, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4He may have seemed older because he was timeless. Although the drugs, combined with booze and hard work must have aged him. He was truly the Hardest Working Man in Show Business, and had the courage to do any crazy-assed thing that would entertain us.
- hsk1179, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Trebe, I thought the same exact thing! It's so sad to see such a great man, a true LEGEND, pass on. But the GodFather of Soul will live on forever! May he Rest in Peace! And as for his music, all I gotta say is FUNKADELIC, BABYYY! It'll be a Christmas we'll all remember. We love ya, man! :-*
- Vision77, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4As a kid my pops would make sure I had my share of Dusties (it's what us Chicagoans call soul music made before 1980). A lot of times I did not want to hear consistent old school. But when James Brown came on, for that 3 or 4 minutes his music was playing everything was better. I can honestly say James Brown despite his flaws influenced a whole race, a nation, music, and a culture (hip-hop). What's funny now is that I can't get enough of the music that I sometimes didn't want to hear.(Especially with lackluster quality of most of music made today)
WHAT YOU GON' PLAY NOW? BOBBY, I DON'T KNOW. BUT EVER I PLAY IT GOTS TO BE FUNKY!
R.I.P. - hwood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4My favorite lyric...
Pappa didn't cuss...
He didn't raise a whole lotta fuss...
But when we did wrong...
Pappa beat the hell out of us. - dvorachek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4RIP James. Nobody had energy like you.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I did not see this coming at all. It's crazy. To die on Christmas... Sad.
