- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -16/+545Well, let's hope he gets the help he needs, professionally, and personally to get his stuff together.
Working stiffs like us will never understand why idols making millions choose to go off the deep end. It doesn't really matter who we are, though. No matter how much we earn, if we are that screwed up, we need everyones sympathy and the right assistance. - AriaStar, on 10/10/2007, -30/+456My dad was a fan of the Wilson brothers. November 10th, 2003 my dad came home, threatened to shoot me and my mom (his last words to me), and then shot himself in the head. My mom and I were right there. No one can truly know what it's like.
Though most of the well-wishes will go toward Owen, I send my heart first to his family. It's an excruciatingly difficult ordeal to go through. Wondering why someone would do this, successfully or otherwise, compounds the pain. There's fright, anger, a sense of betrayal....
As someone committed twice for attempts myself, usually there is a sense of hopelessness, of believing that the world will be better off, that your loved ones will get over it.... Yes, he had money, but he probably also feels that something is missing or wrong with his life that money can't touch.
I'm glad he lived, and hope that both he AND his family get whatever help they need. - ani625, on 10/10/2007, -9/+271Man..i love this guy's acting abilities. Good that he survived.
- shortarabguy, on 10/10/2007, -5/+144"Citing sources, The National Enquirer and Star magazine said..."
Oh, so we're at this level already? - pete1973, on 10/10/2007, -5/+116diddnt see this one coming.
- AriaStar, on 10/10/2007, -10/+102Money can't fix everything. Whatever he felt was wrong couldn't be fixed with just money.
- jokerthief, on 10/10/2007, -3/+93The best comedy comes from a tortured mind.
- SillyRabbits, on 10/10/2007, -7/+88Many "working stiffs like us" understand it perfectly. The same mentality that drives people to seek a life of fame and attention is usually accompanied by other psychological problems. Hollywood folks aren't exactly a group of the most well adjusted, stable personalities.
- truebullfan, on 10/10/2007, -2/+73kind of shocking but it shouldn't be b/c you never know what is going on in these big stars head even w/ all the success and fame. Hope he gets help.
- dagooh, on 10/10/2007, -7/+75No offense but I thought that I was going to get Belair'd
- adamh227, on 10/10/2007, -1/+67And arguably an even better writer.
- celeb, on 10/10/2007, -7/+64"Tries"
Definitely sad. Hope he gets the help he needs. - quokkapox, on 10/10/2007, -6/+56Terrible news... He is an hero of mine.
- justdru, on 10/10/2007, -12/+60GO GO TITLE GRAMMAR GADGET!
- KennMac, on 10/10/2007, -13/+56No class, man.
- tybris, on 10/10/2007, -8/+48It's a sad day for Owen Wilson and grammar.
- AriaStar, on 10/10/2007, -1/+41Along the same vein (no pun intended), you can say that this article is TMI. Or is it okay because he lived and my dad didn't? Or because he's a rich, famous celebrity and my dad wasn't?
When there are people in this world wanting to never hear about bad that people have gone through, it makes those who went through it feel like they're holding in a dirty, shameful secret, compounding the emotions around what happened. In a world where we see Britney's crotch and people search for the most shocking stories, I see no reason why people should have to keep their real stories secret. It also makes people feel so alone in what they went through.
And about your great-grandfather, if in the appropriate time, it would be okay to bring up. If the topic is baseball, no. If the topic is mental illness and what you went though regarding your family gives you insight, then yes. - LucasKane, on 10/10/2007, -6/+42Sorry about your dad Aria, glad that you and Owen Wilson are still around as you're both productive people.
- spudnic, on 10/10/2007, -4/+37Can't fix everything, but it would sure as hell fix 90% of problems most people have.
- sleeknerve, on 10/10/2007, -3/+33Man, almost all of his movies are very funny, and this is weird because his brother did the same thing in the movie The Royal Tennanbaums
- DocHoliday22, on 10/10/2007, -1/+31Yeah, I just looked at his IMDB profile and it seems to be running strong with upcoming movies so it's not like he's washedup or out of work... I never would have expected it...
- quinlan, on 10/10/2007, -4/+33Oh. I see what you did there.
- hellotyler, on 10/10/2007, -5/+32Back to your hole.
- mrASSMAN, on 10/10/2007, -0/+27I would've never imagined he'd be one to commit suicide, this is crazy.
- MOJIRA, on 05/17/2008, -1/+28Agreed. But once those 90% are fixed, you'd probably have a whole new set of problems.
- DocHoliday22, on 10/10/2007, -6/+32Owen Wilson's a nice guy, hope he's alright...
- andrewcsayer, on 10/10/2007, -5/+30What is it with comedians and suicide? Micke Dubois, Tony Hancock, Richard Jeni, Freddie Prinze, Charles Rocket, Drake Sather, Doodles Weaver and more...
- KillTheRhythm, on 10/10/2007, -2/+27Why are you so intent on this being about money?
- shortarabguy, on 10/10/2007, -2/+26Comedians tend to have a pretty brutal past. I can't say for certain because I don't care enough to check, but I'd be willing to bet that a lot of comedians through history had troubled lives. It contributes to their humor as well as depression and anxiety. People tend not to think about what could be wrong with a person's life as long as they make you laugh, but as a consequence they're often left unchecked psychologically.
- darnit, on 10/10/2007, -3/+26"I guess you can dere-lick my balls cap-E-tan."
I wish the man who uttered this line the speediest recovery or I will forever have a hard time laughing at it again. - fearlessfx, on 10/10/2007, -2/+24Thank God he didn't die. If he had, my hopes of seeing a 'Zoolander 2' would have been completely crushed.
and on a more serious note, the man is a great comedic actor. Hopefully his friends and family will make him realize how he has contributed to the entertainment of millions of individuals, and also help him sort out his personal problems. - DNAspark99, on 10/10/2007, -2/+24perhaps because they take the time to see the world as it really is - laughable
- mrASSMAN, on 10/10/2007, -0/+21Clearly you don't see what he did there.
- MagicCake, on 10/10/2007, -1/+22He actually never said he was glad he survived BECAUSE of his acting skills. He made two separate statements there.
- swOhio, on 10/10/2007, -0/+20If we could only get FOX news to confirm...
- Skysurfer, on 10/10/2007, -1/+20I think I'll wait for a better source than the National Enquirer or Star Magazine before putting too much heart into such a tragic story. Both publications tend to be a bit over the top.
- NicksVideo, on 10/10/2007, -2/+21Missing the joke FTW.
- JoshVanDanger, on 10/10/2007, -0/+18This is sad. He may seem like a happy guy but the truth is no one ever really knows what a person thinks, feels, or what they might be going through. I hope he is okay and that he realizes that there is always something to look forward to.
- AriaStar, on 10/10/2007, -1/+18Thanks you.
I hop that Owen's case, being celebrity, can help bring to light that suicide, or even an attempt, can happen to anyone, not just the known-druggies. Here is a rich, famous, clean-cut guy who still tried. ANYONE. - modpancake, on 10/10/2007, -1/+17Lurk moar.
- kixsand, on 10/10/2007, -2/+18I'm usually much more of a "looker" than a "digger" or a "poster". Your post moved me to do both.
Be well. - dearsweetbriar, on 10/10/2007, -1/+17Having a lot of upcoming movies doesn't have anything to do with money, hon. It's about having work -- regardless of whether you're an office-monkey, or a construction worker; a stay at home mom, or even an actor, having work can provide a sense of wholeness, and especially in Hollywood, having work slated is important to keep yourself in the industry. Plus, a lot of actors (i.e. Jonathan Brandis) find themselves desperate when they have trouble finding work and can't see a way to pull themselves out of it. Even with sound investments and enough money to retire from Hollywood, it wouldn't be enough -- like you said, money isn't everything. If anything, having all that money can be the SOURCE of depression, especially if you don't know who your friends are, or the paps keep following you around with cameras up your butt.
So I'm confused why you're using ALL CAPS to argue with someone who possibly agrees with your statement, and just tried to keep the conversation going.
Too much coffee this morning? - adikt, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16true. however, it is hopeful that attention can be turned to try and combat mental illness instead of demonizing it and ridiculing it's victims, whether they be rich or poor.
- AxeSwinger, on 10/10/2007, -2/+17He's a human being. Get some perspective anyone who feels life is hopeless enough to try to end it deserves compassion. I'm sorry you're not rich and bitter because someone else is but you'll have a better time in life if you try dialing down the bitterness.
- TheBigBad, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15Two of the cornerstones of accurate reporting and journalistic integrity
- siszam, on 10/10/2007, -2/+16JCM are you never not an ass? I swear I've dugg down everything you've ever said. If anyone should shut up and say less it is you. You're so obnoxious and just plain not so bright. You don't need to be worrying about how much info others share. Why don't YOU share less info. Many of us would greatly appreciate it.
- testbenchdude, on 10/10/2007, -3/+17Damn I love this guy. How did it come to this? Owen you've got a lot to live for, don't throw it away!
- donkeyshow, on 10/10/2007, -2/+16The big bounce....he was pretty good, and in zoolander, wedding crashers, royal tenanbaums. damn thats alot of great flicks.
good luck buddy, get it together. - LocalDocal, on 10/10/2007, -3/+17Personally, I rather have 90% fixed and deal with only whatever is left over, instead of having to handle both..
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -4/+18Poor man. Let's give him our support.
